Escape the control of ten instructors?!

An uproar swept through the crowd.

“Does that mean ten powerful instructors will obstruct the geniuses inside, leaving them no time to eliminate anyone else?”

“If that’s the case, won’t everything come down to luck?”

“Doesn’t this make the trial harder? Come to think of it, isn’t it a little unfair? Some genius could get tied down by an instructor and fail to reach the top hundred. Wouldn’t that be terrible luck?”

The discussion grew heated.

Dean Xuanyun spoke again. “Everyone, during the three days of the secret-realm trial, the ten instructors will each guard one location. Any contestant who passes through will be detained in combat for two hours. A contestant who escapes through strength or wit will not have to remain tied down for the full two hours.”

“In addition, the ten instructors possess three special admission tokens among them. If they take notice of any geniuses who fail to reach the top hundred, they may choose three and award them the tokens. The condition is that those three geniuses must have fought three of the instructors.”

The crowd exchanged glances.

Obtaining a special admission token would be extremely difficult.

If each instructor detained a contestant for only two hours, perhaps it did not sound that long.

But this was a contest. Every second mattered.

They needed strength—and luck.

Once Dean Xuanyun finished his explanation, he raised a hand, and the top-one-hundred rankings appeared in midair.

One contestant’s name was already there.

First place was none other than…

Yu Changying!

As the crowd read the name, a youth suddenly appeared in the martial field. The token was gone from his waist, and his face looked extremely ugly.

“Is that the boy Yu Changying eliminated? That was so fast! They haven’t even been inside for seven and a half minutes, have they?”

“Hey, how did Yu Changying eliminate you?”

Under everyone’s gaze, the youth flushed with shame and anger and rushed back to the waiting area. In his mind, he relived what had happened. He and Yu Changying landed in the same place. She approached him, and her gentle gaze left him dazed for an instant. The very next moment, she crushed his token.

The youth wanted to weep.

No wonder his mother had told him that the prettier a woman was, the better she was at beguiling people.

The crystal screens continued showing scenes from the secret realm. Yu Changying’s figure darted through a forest.

Just then, another name shot onto the rankings and pushed her into second place.

It was—

Wen Yuchu, Crown Prince of Ziyan Kingdom. Half his face had been disfigured in a fire, and he possessed Heaven-rank aptitude.

Eliminations: three.

The crowd stared in astonishment. His elimination speed was simply too fast.

But soon afterward, Wen Yuchu encountered an instructor. At the unexpected sight, he frowned slightly.

The instructor wore a mild smile. “This is also part of the trial. You need only escape from me.”

Wen Yuchu asked calmly, “Instructor, could you tell me the exact rules of our contest?”

“Of course…” The instructor began, then shook his head with a smile. “I cannot.”

Wen Yuchu fell silent.

Before he could prepare, the instructor attacked. Wen Yuchu was instantly driven back more than a dozen steps, the impact rattling his chest.

As the instructor closed in, Wen Yuchu swiftly summoned a longsword. He swung it in an attempt to force the instructor back and use the opening to escape.

But the instructor’s faint smile suggested he had already seen through the plan.

He raised a hand and sent Wen Yuchu flying with a single palm strike.

Wen Yuchu hurriedly drove his sword into the ground to steady himself. He regarded the instructor gravely. The man had to be at least in the Heaven-rank realm, so fighting him head-on would guarantee defeat.

Wen Yuchu adopted a circuitous strategy. First, he would probe the extent of the instructor’s power and discover… the true purpose of his presence.

At the same time—

In the ruined town, Shen Yan had been about to leave when an immense pressure abruptly descended and forced her back step after step.

She focused her gaze.

A female instructor stood before her, apparently in her thirties or forties. She held a coiled whip and tapped it against her palm.

The woman smiled. “What luck. I encountered the genius with Transcendent Heaven-rank aptitude right at the start.”

“Instructor?” Shen Yan frowned.

“That’s right. If you want to leave this shabby little town, you’ll have to shake me off first. And I’ll do my utmost to tie you down so you have no time to eliminate anyone else.”

Shen Yan surmised that this, too, was one of the secret-realm trial’s rules.

The instructors’ task was to… detain the contestants.

Then escape was her only option!

Without hesitation, Shen Yan turned and ran.

The woman smiled prettily and sighed. “If I let you escape, what would become of Xue Erniang’s reputation?”

As soon as she spoke, Xue Erniang lashed the whip at Shen Yan’s back. It lengthened in an instant.

Sensing danger, Shen Yan dodged sideways, only for the whip to curve in midair. With a sharp crack, it struck her thigh.

Fiery pain erupted where it landed. Her leg nearly buckled and sent her to her knees.

The assault did not end there. The whip flew at Shen Yan again.

Relying on her movement technique, she evaded most of its attacks.

Xue Erniang laughed softly. “A fine movement technique, and decent speed. Your cultivation is simply a little low.”

She swung the whip at Shen Yan again. Shen Yan summoned the Spirit Phoenix Divine Sword and fought back.

Over the next several exchanges, Shen Yan could tell that Xue Erniang was holding back rather than fighting in earnest.

Shen Yan slashed. A sword shadow resembling a fire dragon shot toward Xue Erniang’s whip. With a quick twist of her wrist, Xue Erniang blocked it.

Shen Yan seized the opportunity to leap through the window of a ruined house.

Xue Erniang laughed lightly. Powerful spiritual power erupted from the hand holding her whip, and she lashed it straight at the house.

Crack!

The whip tore the building apart in an instant.

Tiles and bricks crashed to the ground as clouds of dust billowed upward.

Just as Xue Erniang moved to pursue Shen Yan, her expression changed slightly. Shen Yan’s presence had vanished.

Xue Erniang flashed away. In the blink of an eye, she stood atop the highest point in the little town. Her gaze swept the area in search of Shen Yan, but found nothing.

Then, beyond the town, she saw a purple figure vanish into the forest.

“She really did get away…” Xue Erniang sighed. She could not leave the ruined town, for it was the place she had been assigned to guard.
