The hearts of the youths admitted to Western Region Academy pounded at those words, and a sense of shared honor filled them.

The entrance examination had officially ended.

But the dean, elders, and instructors still had to award their special admission tokens.

Li Buman received special admission because of his exceptional talent for alchemy.

Several other outstanding geniuses were admitted the same way.

Western Region Academy gave the top one hundred half a day to pack and prepare. After that, they had to enter the academy or be deemed to have forfeited their places as new students.

The rule was exceptionally strict.

More than half the geniuses therefore followed the dean, elders, and instructors to the academy gates ahead of time.

Shen Yan did not leave so quickly because of Feng Xingyao inside her ability space…

She told Jiang Xianyue and the Zhuge brothers, “I left something at the inn. I’ll go back for it. You should head to Western Region Academy first.”

“Yanyan, I’ll come with you.”

“No need. I can go by myself.”

“All right.”

Zhuge Youlin grinned. “Then we’ll wait for you at the academy. Hurry, and don’t be late.”

Shen Yan nodded lightly and slipped out of the Western Region martial field as quickly as possible.

Numerous factions had set their sights on her and followed in secret. Some wanted to kill her, while others hoped to recruit a future powerhouse before anyone else could.

Shen Yan knew people were following, but they were destined to lose her.

At a corner, she seized the opening and entered her ability space.

Her pursuers’ expressions changed. They searched the surroundings, but the result was obvious: Shen Yan was nowhere to be found.

Meanwhile—

Feng Xingyao sensed Shen Yan the moment she entered the ability space.

Cold menace filled his red pupils, along with a faint trace of killing intent. His silver hair was disheveled, and nine spotless white tails swayed behind him. The fox ears atop his head should have made him look docile. Instead, he radiated only ferocity and dominance.

He did not seem to recognize her.

“M-Master!” Ninefold, currently in the form of the Demon-Suppressing Pagoda, sped toward Shen Yan to seek her protection. Feng Xingyao swatted them aside with one hand. They crashed into a nearby shelf with a bang, shattering it to pieces.

“Boo-hoo, that hurts…”

Ninefold howled pitifully.

Shen Yan frowned at the shattered shelf. She had stored it here during the apocalypse, and now Feng Xingyao had destroyed it.

His dangerous eyes locked onto her. One tail whipped toward her, and Shen Yan dodged sideways. But his aura suppressed her body and abruptly slowed her movements.

Bang!

The tail hurled her to the ground. Pain shot through her where she landed.

With no time to care about it, Shen Yan sprang up. The Crimson Flame Dagger materialized in her right hand, and she attacked Feng Xingyao with crisp, efficient movements.

Whenever a fox tail struck at her, she gripped the dagger and slashed without hesitation, viciously holding nothing back.

Though she failed to injure Feng Xingyao, she did shave white fur from his tail.

Another tail sent her flying.

Boom—

Shen Yan rolled several times. The pain felt as though someone were flaying flesh from her body.

Blood spilled from the corner of her mouth.

At that moment, Feng Xingyao’s gaze shifted. The scent of blood reached him, and some measure of awareness seemed to return.

He saw Shen Yan on the ground, his eyes darkened, and he walked over. As he crouched to help her up, the vigilant Shen Yan drove her dagger into his chest with a backhanded strike.

With a tearing sound, pain pierced his chest.

Feng Xingyao studied her deeply. His face paled slightly. He closed one hand around hers where it held the Crimson Flame Dagger and said in a mild voice, “It hurts.”

Shen Yan immediately knew his reason had returned. She followed the line of her arm. The dagger was embedded at least half a finger’s depth into Feng Xingyao’s chest.

Blood spread across his white robe like paint blooming into an incomparably vivid flower—beautiful in a shocking way.

She pressed her lips together and looked up at him. Their eyes met.

Shen Yan looked away. When she tried to pull out the dagger, Feng Xingyao held her hand fast and prevented her from moving.

His large hand around hers sent a faint electric sensation through her.

“Let me pull it out. I’ll stop the bleeding.”

“But I’m afraid of pain.” Feng Xingyao laughed softly. His pale lips curved upward, as though he did not care about the injury.

Shen Yan fell silent for a moment.

“It has to come out even if you’re afraid.” As she spoke, she withdrew her hand and took out styptic powder, intending to sprinkle it around the wound. His clothes blocked her access.

Her fingers curled slightly. Then she decided to tear the garment.

Rip—

The white robe split open.

Shen Yan focused only on his wound and did not look at the exposed skin. She sprinkled the styptic powder around it, and the bleeding soon stopped.

She lowered her gaze. “You could have avoided that.”

“Mm. I could have.”

“Then why didn’t you?”

Feng Xingyao laughed softly. “I didn’t expect you to truly strike. If your dagger had landed a little to one side, it would have pierced my heart. I might have died on the spot.”

“Don’t trust me too much.” Shen Yan gripped the dagger again and slowly raised her black eyes to him. Her voice was indifferent. “I will do anything to protect myself.”

Feng Xingyao suddenly leaned closer. Their faces were so near that the slightest movement would bring their lips together. He lowered his gaze, his eyes wicked and captivating, his voice slightly hoarse, languid and seductive. “Is that so? What if you change one day?”

Their breaths mingled in the charged air.

Shen Yan remained calm. “Nothing and no one is worth changing for.”

“How ruthless.”

Feng Xingyao’s smile deepened. In the next instant, Shen Yan abruptly pulled out the dagger.

He frowned and gave a muffled groan.

Shen Yan put away the Crimson Flame Dagger and pushed at his shoulder, making him move back. Then she picked up the powder and treated the wound again.

Blood slid toward his lower abdomen.

She stopped the bleeding and wrapped the injury simply. Then she took a clean handkerchief and wiped the blood from his body.

The moment she touched his abdomen, Feng Xingyao’s gaze darkened. He abruptly caught her hand and flung it aside.

“Don’t do unnecessary things.”
