The fallen man stared at Shen Yan in terror.

“Then I’ll give you another way to die,” she said, almost pleasantly.

She closed the distance in an instant and drove a kick into his chest.

Bang!

Ribs cracked beneath her foot.

The man screamed.

Shen Yan crouched, pulled the Crimson Flame Dagger from his skull with one clean motion, and plunged it into his throat.

Rip!

The blade tore through flesh.

The man died with his eyes wide open.

Shen Yan slowly withdrew the dagger.

Blood coated its edge and splashed across her clothes.

Inside the spatial domain, Ninefold watched with enormous eyes.

Master was terrifying!

This was the first time he had seen her truly fight.

She was incredible!

Ninefold spun toward the mysterious, bewitching man. Cradling his own little face in both hands, he declared with boundless pride, “Look! My master is amazing!”

Feng Xingyao lounged against the couch.

Untamed arrogance lingered between his brows. His eyes were deep as an abyss, and an almost imperceptible smile touched his lips.

“Adequate.”

Ninefold did not take offense.

He grew even happier.

Very few people in the world ever received praise from this man.

“Master is the best!”

Ninefold raised his little fists and cheered for Shen Yan through the spatial divide.

An unreadable smile passed through Feng Xingyao’s eyes.

She concealed so many secrets.

He wanted to uncover them.

Shen Yan quickly finished the men.

She tore a piece of cloth from one corpse and wiped the blood from the Crimson Flame Dagger.

Just as she was about to return it to its sheath, her hand stopped.

Her razor-sharp gaze snapped toward the trees.

A petite girl with twin braids stepped into view, an intrigued smile on her lips.

She was Jiang Xianyue, eldest daughter of Xuanwu Kingdom’s artifact-refining clan.

“You are not useless.”

Shen Yan did not argue.

She sheathed the Crimson Flame Dagger against her leg, rose, and answered blandly, “Mm.”

Jiang Xianyue clasped her hands behind her back and approached with a bright smile.

“Shen Yan, why don’t we join forces and seize flags together?”

Shen Yan looked at her. “You aren’t afraid I’ll drag you down?”

Jiang Xianyue grinned, revealing dimples in both cheeks.

“You may have no spiritual power, but your combat experience is far better than mine. It’s not clear which of us would be holding the other back.”

She tilted her head.

“So? Will you join forces with me?”

“I have no interest in the Qiutian Sect.”

Jiang Xianyue froze.

“Then why did you enter the competition?”

Shen Yan glanced at her. “That has nothing to do with you.”

She turned to leave.

Jiang Xianyue hurried after her, looking rather dejected.

“You really won’t work with me?”

Shen Yan paused. “Why choose me?”

Jiang Xianyue’s eyes lit up.

“You looked so impressive when you killed those men!”

Shen Yan fell silent.

Then she said, “I have something important to do. I cannot join you. Find someone else.”

Jiang Xianyue nodded in disappointment.

“All right.”

Before Shen Yan left, the girl smiled again.

“Shen Yan, my name is Jiang Xianyue. When the competition ends, I’d like to invite you to a meal.”

Shen Yan nodded. “All right.”

After they parted, Shen Yan’s gaze darkened.

She was still too weak.

She had killed Nangong Yu’s lackeys without ever sensing Jiang Xianyue nearby.

Her need for the Blood-Devouring Pearl grew more urgent.

Only after obtaining it could she remove the toxic seal on her Core Spirit Bone and begin cultivating.

Not far ahead, Shen Yan saw a red flag planted beneath a large tree.

Flags were not her objective.

She had no intention of pulling it up.

She continued walking.

“Shen Yan! That flag belongs to this princess!”

A shrill voice rang out.

Shen Yan looked over.

Nangong Ying was charging toward the flag with several lackeys.

Shen Yan swept them with a cold gaze.

“Hold her down!” Nangong Ying ordered.

As the lackeys rushed forward, Shen Yan bent and drew the Crimson Flame Dagger.

The blade cleared its sheath with a flash of cold light.

Shen Yan raised her eyes.

She remembered these people.

Every one of them had bullied the original girl.

Now she could avenge a small portion of that suffering.

The lackeys paused at the sight of the dagger, then burst into laughter.

“Hahaha! Does a good-for-nothing like you even know how to use a weapon?”

“Do you think drawing a dagger will frighten—aaaaah!”

The mockery ended in a scream.

Shen Yan had already cut one man’s throat.

He fell with a thud, eyes still open in death.

“You… You!”

Nangong Ying had just pulled up the flag.

She turned to see Shen Yan kill the man and tightened both hands around the pole.

Her body trembled.

“Shen Yan, you dare kill someone?”

“Mm.”

Shen Yan answered with remarkable patience.

Her eyes, however, remained glacial as they fixed on Nangong Ying.

The stare truly frightened the princess.

With a trembling voice, Nangong Ying ordered the others, “Kill her!”

The lackeys were shocked, but they still believed Shen Yan was useless.

The first death had to be an accident.

“Shen Yan, you are courting death!”

They summoned their weapons and closed in.

Most were at the third or fourth level of the Yellow-rank realm. Shen Yan could handle them easily.

But one man and Nangong Ying had reached the fifth level.

Their spiritual-power attacks increased the pressure on her sharply.

Nangong Ying drew a deep breath and forced down her fear.

Humiliation turned to rage.

“Wretch! How dare you frighten this princess? I will make you pay with your life!”

A long whip appeared in her hand, covered in sharp barbs.

She snapped it viciously toward Shen Yan.

Crack!

“Agh!”

The scream came from one of Nangong Ying’s own lackeys.

Shen Yan had seized him and dragged his body into the whip’s path.

The barbs tore through the clothing across his back and carved a deep, bloody wound.

Nangong Ying froze, then shouted at him, “Get out of the way!”

She swung again.

Spiritual power reinforced the whip, making every strike dangerously strong.

Yet each time Nangong Ying aimed for Shen Yan, she struck one of her own people instead.
