The black-clad man’s face sank. “What kind of attitude is that?!”

Zhuge Youlin picked up his chopsticks and smiled. “The attitude of someone who wants to eat.”

The man was about to teach him a lesson when Huo Wanchen raised a hand to stop him.

“Wanchen…”

Seeing the brothers’ red hair, Huo Wanchen recalled recent rumors. Among the applicants were more than twenty foremost geniuses, one of whom was the red-haired Zhuge Youlin.

He smiled faintly. “You must be taking Western Region Academy’s entrance test tomorrow. When you meet people who may soon be your senior brothers, you should show some courtesy.”

Zhuge Youlin played dumb. “I just want to eat right now.”

Huo Wanchen sneered inwardly, then turned his deep gaze toward Shen Huai’s sister.

At last, he led his companions away, though they sat nearby.

People continued studying Shen Yan, curious about the sister of Summoner genius Shen Huai.

After they left, Zhuge Youlin signaled Shen Yan with his eyes, plainly asking whether Huo Wanchen was her brother’s mortal enemy.

She did not know, but he was clearly no friend of Shen Huai’s.

“Let’s eat.”

The server placed hot dishes on the table. “Please enjoy your meal.”

None of the three drank. Tomorrow was important, and they could not indulge recklessly.

“The food here is quite good,” Zhuge Weiran said.

“It is,” Zhuge Youlin agreed.

Shen Yan nodded.

Throughout dinner, she noticed Huo Wanchen’s group glancing toward her.

Zhuge Youlin noticed too. “They aren’t planning to target you, are they?”

“What if they are?”

He flashed a toothy grin. “Friendship price: one thousand taels of gold. Seventh Brother and I will escort you.”

Shen Yan glanced at him. “Dream on.”

“Sigh…” Disappointed, he shoveled several pieces of braised pork into his bowl and continued eating.

When they finished, each paid for their own meal.

Zhuge Youlin’s brows seemed to knot when he handed over the money.

Shen Yan had never seen anyone love wealth so much. He had not even bought life-saving pills, choosing to hoard every coin.

Money existed to be spent.

Noticing her gaze, Zhuge Weiran explained helplessly, “He’s been like this since childhood.”

Shen Yan nodded.

The three returned to the inn together.

Zhuge Youlin smiled with anticipation. “What kind of test will we face tomorrow? I can hardly wait.”

Shen Yan’s gaze shifted.

…

Early the next morning, Western Region City was already bustling.

Crowds hurried toward the city’s martial grounds to watch Western Region Academy’s entrance test.

The grounds were enormous, capable of holding nearly a hundred thousand people.

By the time Shen Yan and the brothers arrived, dense crowds blocked the entrance.

A voice shouted, “Applicants, line up over here!”

They looked toward the sound. Young applicants queued on the far right and were admitted only after presenting their registration tokens.

Spectators entered from the far left.

Among them, Shen Yan recognized numerous academy heads and elders.

“Shen Yan, come on! Let’s line up!” Zhuge Youlin called.

She followed the brothers to the back of the queue.

By coincidence, they encountered the Spirit-Plant Chi Clan’s sedan-chair procession again.

The vast party occupied a great deal of space, provoking condemnation from those nearby.

Despite the complaints, the Chi Clan lined up behind Shen Yan.

She glanced back. The person inside appeared to be sleeping yet again.

Shen Yan was speechless.

Zhuge Youlin frowned. “Don’t tell me Chi Yue plans to take his entire procession into the test. That’s absurd!”

“Agreed.”

Many young geniuses repeatedly looked over in displeasure. If Western Region Academy truly permitted the Chi Clan’s young master to participate in such a manner, they would never accept it.

His entire manner suggested he held all of them in contempt.

Time passed, and Shen Yan’s trio soon approached the entrance.

A late-arriving youth in black happened to glimpse Shen Yan’s back. He pressed a hand over his left upper arm. Though the wound had healed, remembering that night made the spot where her dagger had pierced him ache faintly.

His eyes darkened.

She was here too.

She should not recognize him. He had disguised his face and changed his name.

The black-clad youth withdrew his gaze and quietly joined the back of the line.

At the entrance, Zhuge Weiran presented his token and was admitted, followed by Zhuge Youlin and Shen Yan.

Chi Yue came after her.

The eight bearers actually lowered the sedan chair and bowed respectfully.

“Young Master, it is your turn.”

Everyone stared.

Shen Yan had been about to enter, but Zhuge Youlin pulled her back, wanting to see Chi Yue’s true face.

Even the academy instructor watched curiously.

A long, immaculate hand, translucent as fine white jade, lifted the gauze.

A white figure emerged.

The youth bore a red mark between his brows. His dark-brown eyes were clear, lending him an otherworldly air. His lips were vivid red, and smooth black hair was half tied with a teal ribbon in a loose, careless style.

He raised his eyes slightly, his gaze cold and world-weary.

He appeared seventeen or eighteen.

The eight bearers watched him nervously, afraid he might do something.

“Young Master, this way,” one hurriedly said.

Chi Yue began walking.

The crowd stared in shock.

With every step, faint teal light appeared in his footprint. It resembled the phantom of a spirit plant, but vanished almost immediately.

Chi Yue walked exceptionally slowly.

He showed his registration token to the instructor, who had yet to recover and could not resist looking at him several more times.

Chi Yue was beautiful, like an immortal descended from heaven.

And extraordinarily fair-skinned.
