Chapter 3

They said the Ghost Doll, as the final big boss, was full of resentment and wanted to sacrifice ten thousand lives.

The male and female leads, as demon hunters, barely escaped death to scatter his soul.

They said the Ghost Doll died a tragic death before, returning to the human world only for revenge. Each kill darkened his resentment, and once he had the blood of the living on his hands, he could never reincarnate.

I read with my heart pounding. Though I didn’t want to believe it, I dared not dismiss it either.

I no longer dared to let Li Xiangxiang go out alone.

The child looked stubborn. “Big Sis, I’m ten years old now. I can do all the work you can do. You don’t have to go! You just rest at home. I’ll support you!”

Me: “Big Sis will just stand aside and watch you work, okay? I won’t go to the field, I won’t pick up a knife, and I won’t tie firewood. Big Sis won’t do anything.”

He muttered, “Then you might as well stay at home.”

I narrowed my eyes, grabbed his ear, and asked slowly, “Little Xiangxiang, are you going to agree or not?”

Li Xiangxiang’s expression froze. He weakly pulled his ear free and nodded reluctantly.

It was time to stock up on firewood, so Li Xiangxiang and I went to the back hill to chop wood.

Along the way, the fathers and mothers working by the field ridges saw us and called out cheerfully, even stuffing snacks into Xiangxiang’s hands.

Li Xiangxiang hopped and skipped, responding with a smile, accepted the candy, and even said he’d make dumplings for everyone next time.

He said he didn’t want me to come along, but actually, when I accompanied him, he was so happy the corners of his mouth wouldn’t go down.

I followed behind, smiling at the back of his head where his hair was tightly tied by me.

Actually, during that first year, Li Xiangxiang didn’t like to talk.

Everyone knew I had picked up a little boy, and they were all curious and quite caring.

Because I was only fifteen and a girl, the villagers feared I couldn’t even support myself.

So they brought many old clothes from their own children.

Seeing Li Xiangxiang thin and small, someone would leave a few eggs at my doorstep every day, and the neighbor granny would share some rice when my rice jar was nearly empty.

Adults often dropped by to playfully tease Li Xiangxiang.

He never spoke, nor showed any expression. Only when I came home would his eyes move. That year, he didn’t even pay much attention to me.

I purposely named him Li Xiangxiang to amuse myself, but he had no reaction.

Later, he gradually started talking and smiling, became quite sweet-tongued, and even seemed quite satisfied with that name.

Whenever we went out and someone called, “Li Xiangxiang!”

He would loudly reply, “Here! Hello!”

Every time I heard it, I couldn’t help but feel a little flower bloom in my heart, sweetly thinking: Well, kids just need some raising.
