The “Green Tea” Star Was Lazy All Along - Chapter 1

  3. Chapter 1

I was a green tea actress famous throughout showbiz.

Every day, countless abusive messages poured into my Weibo inbox. I had even won the title of “Most Hated Actress of the Year.”

But I had no idea what was so green tea about me.

If I spoke to a male celebrity, I was accused of pandering to men. If I happened to wear a dress in the same color family as another actress, I was accused of competing for male attention.

No matter what I did, people twisted my intentions.

So I simply gave up, let my true nature loose, and stopped pretending.

The result was that more and more people hated on me. I had plenty of buzz, but my reputation was so bad that no one wanted to cast me.

Watching my bank balance dwindle, I paced anxiously around my apartment.

Just as I was panicking, my manager, Sister Li, suddenly told me that a variety show had specifically invited me. She asked if I wanted to accept.

I instantly broke into a huge smile and urged her to say yes.

To my surprise, Sister Li hesitated. “It’s a farming variety show…”

My smile froze.

Everyone called me green tea, but they didn’t know I wasn’t green tea at all. I was simply born terminally lazy.

If I could sit, I would never stand. If I could lie down, I would never sit. And if I could get someone else to do a job, I would never do it myself.

In short, I was lazy.

To keep myself from getting beaten to death once I entered the real world, I had trained for more than a decade and finally developed a silver tongue.

Yet people mistook it for green tea behavior. What could I do?

I looked at my savings, then at the fee the production team was offering. Gritting my teeth, I agreed.

It wasn’t as if people had only started cursing me yesterday. I could barely afford food—why the hell would I care about that now?!

The show would begin filming three days later and run for two weeks. The contract said it would be recorded first and broadcast afterward.

Rumor had it that the guests included Song Qinglan, the wildly popular rising starlet currently in the limelight, as well as a mysterious special guest.

They had mainly invited me for the traffic generated by my infamy and to use me as a foil for Song Qinglan.

The greener my tea, the purer she would look.

My position was simple: hey, it was money. Nothing shameful about that.

At the time, I had no idea this was a trap laid specifically for me. I happily made my way to the filming location.

The scheduled day soon arrived. The opening segment consisted of the guests introducing themselves.

There were five guests in total: singing sensation Li Jiang, Best Actor Zhou Xin, rising starlet Song Qinglan, and me.

Then there was the cool guy who wore sunglasses from beginning to end and looked utterly aloof.

He had swagger, but I didn’t know him.

Besides, I kept feeling a cold chill in the way he looked at me. Scary.

Outside my field of vision, however, the live comments had already erupted.

[Holy crap! Chi Yan, son of the country’s richest man, is actually here. Don’t tell me he’s the mysterious guest!!!]

[Now this is going to be good. Qiu Ying is in for a world of pain.]

[Exactly! Chi Yan is her number-one anti-fan. He’s hated that damned green tea girl for ages.]

[Qiu Ying, get out of showbiz!]

I knew none of this.

Even if I had, my reaction probably would have been…

Sorry, there are too many haters of yours truly. I honestly can’t remember who you are.

But if you insist on coming at me, all I can say is, “Haha! If you kicked me, congratulations—you kicked a ball of cotton. (Finger heart.)”

Everyone introduced themselves in turn. When it was Song Qinglan’s turn, she smiled gently. “I’m Song Qinglan. I hope all my seniors will take good care of me over the next two weeks.”

It was polished and gracious, neither fawning nor clichéd.

Paired with her pure smile, it was enough to melt anyone’s heart.

Sure enough, the viewers watching the live broadcast had already gone wild.

[Our Lanlan is the most beautiful woman in the world. No arguments accepted.]

[Waaah, Song Qinglan is so gentle. She’s like the unattainable first love in an old-school romance novel.]

[I love her. Casual viewer turned fan!]

[Unlike Qiu Ying. Look at those shifty eyes. I bet she’s already plotting how to hook a man!]

As the designated foil, of course I couldn’t disappoint my esteemed viewers.

When it was my turn, I winked at the three male guests. “Hello, seniors. I’m Qiu Ying. When I received the invitation, I truly couldn’t believe it.

“I never imagined I would have the opportunity to appear on a show with such outstanding seniors. I am deeply honored.”

Naturally, I didn’t forget to flatter the director. “And thank you to the production team for inviting me.”

Basically, it was one extravagant torrent of shameless praise.

Everyone looked a little awkward, but from what I could tell, each of them was secretly enjoying it.

What I hadn’t expected was for someone to wreck the mood so quickly.

Just as I was getting into the swing of my compliments, the cocky guy in the corner suddenly rose, walked up to me, and said coldly, “Cheap attention-seeking.”

The words choked me into silence.

The comments began flooding the screen…

From Song Qinglan’s die-hard fans:

[She’s so annoying. Why did the production team invite her? I only want to watch Lanlan, not some clout-chasing suck-up.]

[She looks so ugly when she fawns over people. How can two human beings be so different?]

Then there were the spectators reveling in my misfortune:

[Hahahaha, I’m dying! As expected of Green Tea Girl’s number-one anti-fan—his roasting skills are unmatched!]

[Watching her get shut down is so delicious. I had no appetite before, but now I could inhale three huge bowls of rice.]

And then there were the baffling ones:

[Wait, am I the only one who thinks Qiu Ying is actually kind of pretty?]

[Exactly. That wink just now was enough for me to name our future children.]

[You people… I give up. You must really be starving.]

The thick skin I had developed over the years was no joke. I calmly finished my introduction. This suited me perfectly; the contrast was clearly dramatic enough.

Then came the variety show’s first segment.

Since this was a farming show, conditions were naturally rather rough.

We were currently in the county town, while the actual filming location was out in the countryside.

For the sake of entertainment, the directors specifically forbade us from taking our own trailers to the village.

Instead, we would draw lots to choose our means of transportation.

There were five options: ox cart, motorcycle, bicycle, tractor, and car.

The moment I saw what I had drawn, my face turned green.
