The Jealous Dragon - Chapter 2
On the way back, stars glittered across a cloudless sky.
It should have been a lovely night for a walk.
Then, all at once, black clouds bore down over the city and rain came pouring down.
Su Yan took off his jacket and held it over my head.
Lightning exploded above us.
The thunder made my heart tremble.
Partway home, Su Yan abruptly stopped.
He kept the jacket over our heads but bent down to hide a little behind me, his lips close to my ear as he complained mournfully, “Jiejie, that man you’ve been fooling around with is here to bully me again.”
I looked up.
Through the thick curtain of rain stood a lone, straight-backed figure.
He had no umbrella, yet neither his hair nor his clothes were wet. Whenever the downpour approached him, it seemed to strike an invisible shield and obediently flow elsewhere.
He simply stood there, staring hard at my face. His eyes were as still as a rainy night, yet filled with emotions as turbulent as the storm.
He had all the righteous fury of a lawful spouse catching their partner cheating.
His gaze made me feel guilty. Instinctively, I asked Su Yan, “Are you sure… he’s the other man?”
“Of course, Jiejie. Would I… lie to you?” By the end, Su Yan’s mournful voice had taken on the tremor of tears.
My heart clenched. I hurried to soothe him. “I’m sorry, I’m sorry. It’s all my fault. I promise I won’t let you suffer again.”
“Then what do we do now?”
Reason told me to tell Liu Yi to get lost.
But once the words reached my lips, I couldn’t force them out.
Seeing my hesitation, Su Yan began to pity himself. “Forget it. I knew you still had feelings for him… I can’t keep letting you think I’m jealous and petty. I’ll be understanding this time.”
He even gave a little sob.
Actual tears rolled down his jaw and slipped inside my collar.
I panicked. Putting on a brave front, I snapped at Liu Yi, “Stop coming to see me, Liu Yi! Whatever happened between us before, I’ve turned over a new leaf. I’m going to settle down with Su Yan!”
The downpour slanted noisily around us.
Branches dragged their leaves through the air with a loud rustling. Thunder boomed and lightning flashed. I didn’t know whether Liu Yi could hear me.
I only knew the wind had grown colder.
The rain heavier.
Even the thunder and lightning seemed much more violent.
Su Yan still wasn’t satisfied. Through a haze of tears, he said, “How could he hear you in this storm, Jiejie? Look how sure he is of himself. He’s certain I can’t win you from him, and you’ll leave me behind again.”
Absolutely not.
I demanded absolute purity in love. I would never let anyone taint my relationship!
I gathered my courage and shouted at Liu Yi, “Did you hear me? Get lost! Stop upsetting my boyfriend!”
“Oh? Boyfriend?” Liu Yi finally acknowledged me.
His voice wasn’t loud.
Cold. Amused.
Despite the distance between us and the roar of the rain, every word reached my ears with perfect clarity.
My heart lurched again.
What was going on…?
He made it sound as though I was the one being unreasonable, and he was the one who’d been wronged.
Su Yan pleaded desperately in my ear. “Don’t fall for it, Jiejie. He takes advantage of your memory loss. Every time, he loses his temper and acts like he’s your rightful partner. Please, don’t leave me out here all alone again…”
Flustered and at a complete loss, I could only clutch the hem of Su Yan’s clothes. “Then what do we do? I told him to go, but he won’t.”
“I do have an idea… I’m just afraid you’ll be angry if I tell you.” Su Yan looked torn. He sighed, then choked out, “Forget it, Jiejie. I’ve given way so many times already. What’s one more? You should just…”
“No!” I wasn’t the sort to keep doing something wrong just because I’d started!
I cut him off and reassured him. “Don’t worry. I treated you badly before, but now I finally have a chance to make it up to you. How could I stand by and watch you suffer again? That would be weak. That’s not me!”
Su Yan was almost weeping with joy. He stumbled over his words. “Really? You’d really break with him for me? Jiejie… I never thought I’d live to see this day. I thought I’d have to spend my whole life suffering through sharing you with him…”
My heart was breaking.
What kind of absolute bastard had I been?
I was so guilty I wanted to drop to my knees before Su Yan right then and there.
At that moment, he gazed into my eyes, brimming with love and hope.
“Then would you slap him for me?”
