Chapter 6

When Pei Shu and I bowed to Heaven and Earth, Lu Jingci stood beneath the corridor.

I could feel his gaze on me.

But I didn’t look.

The bridal veil fell, and the whole world turned red.

Pei Shu held the other end of the red silk, his steps steady.

When it came time for husband and wife to bow to each other, he paused for a moment.

The ceremonial official urged, “Bride and groom, bow to each other.”

I heard Pei Shu ask very softly, “Song Zhining, if you regret this now, there’s still time.”

Through the veil, I couldn’t see his face clearly.

But I heard him clearly.

He was asking me. Not the Song Family. Not the circumstances.

I tightened my grip on the red silk.

“I don’t regret it.”

The moment that bow was completed, the sound of porcelain shattering suddenly rang out from outside.

The wedding hall fell into chaos.

Someone shouted, “There’s poison in the wine!”

The nuptial wine that had originally been set on the Lu Family’s ceremonial table had been intercepted by men from Dali Temple.

When a silver needle was dipped into it, the tip turned a frightening black.

The guests erupted in uproar.

Madam Lu finally couldn’t remain standing.

She pointed at me and shouted, “Song Zhining switched the wine!”

I was still under my bridal veil and nearly laughed out loud.

She really was desperate.

Pei Shu swept aside the red cloth on the ceremonial table.

Beneath it was a small wooden box.

When the box was opened, there was a ledger inside.

Shen Jiaojiao stepped out from behind the crowd.

In her hand was the other half of a jade clasp.

“The ledger is here.”

Madam Lu’s pupils contracted sharply.

“Where did you get that?”

Shen Jiaojiao’s voice trembled, but she did not retreat.

“Before my father died, he gave me the jade clasp.”

“He said the other half was in the hands of the person in the Lu Family who could truly save me.”

She looked at Pei Shu.

“I found the wrong person.”

Lu Jingci’s face went pale.

Shen Jiaojiao continued, “I thought it was Jingci.”

“So I entered the Lu Mansion. I endured you testing medicines on me, endured you searching through my trunks, and endured him distrusting me again and again.”

Lu Jingci took a step forward.

“Ah Jiao.”

Shen Jiaojiao didn’t look at him.

She handed the jade clasp to Pei Shu.

“Only after Miss Song came last night did I dare open the mechanism.”

Only then did I realize that the half jade clasp had not been a token.

It was a key.

The hidden compartment beneath the ceremonial table had been concealed in the main hall of the Lu Mansion.

Madam Lu never would have imagined that the ledger she had been searching for these past three years was right where she served tea and received guests every day.

Pei Shu opened the ledger.

Inside were records of Madam Lu’s dealings with outside officials: privately selling military grain, embezzling compensation funds, and hiring assassins.

There was also the payment record for that arrow during the spring hunt three years ago.

My father had only read one page before his expression darkened terrifyingly.

Madam Lu suddenly lunged at Shen Jiaojiao.

“You slut!”

The attendants beside Pei Shu immediately stopped her.

Lu Jingci finally rushed over and stood in front of Shen Jiaojiao.

Madam Lu’s slap landed on his face.

It rang out sharply.

Lu Jingci turned his head aside and did not move for a long while.

Madam Lu froze as well.

Perhaps in her eyes, Lu Jingci was still that child she had raised, the one who would believe her and speak on her behalf.

Lu Jingci slowly lifted his eyes.

“Mother, that’s enough.”

Madam Lu let out a shrill laugh.

“You call me Mother?”

“I raised you for over ten years, and in the end, for the sake of a sickly little wretch and a woman who hasn’t even entered the family yet, you turn around and bite me?”

Lu Jingci’s voice was very soft.

“You tried to kill me.”

Madam Lu looked at him coldly.

“If I had truly wanted to kill you, you would have died long ago.”

The moment those words came out, Lu Jingci’s face went utterly blank.

The men from Dali Temple stepped forward to arrest her.

Madam Lu did not struggle.

But as she passed by me, she suddenly stopped.

“Song Zhining, do you think you’ve won just because you changed men?”

I lifted my veil and looked at her.

“At least I didn’t drink your family’s wine.”

Her face twitched.

Then I added, “And I didn’t help your son coax his first love, either.”

Someone in the crowd couldn’t hold back and let out a low laugh.

By the time Madam Lu was dragged away, her face had turned livid with rage.
