Summary
Modern-day exorcist Zhao Li awakens in the body of an abused noblewoman in Great Jing—a dynasty where court intrigue is vicious, ghosts are real, and her new villainess system rewards her for surviving both. After severing ties with the family that cast her aside, she wins the protection of the feared Jingning Guard and its cold, ruthless Commander-in-Chief, Shen Yan. Armed with modern occult knowledge, a sharp tongue, and an alarming talent for stumbling into supernatural disasters, Zhao Li investigates vengeful brides, cursed children, human skins, and a beautiful moth-woman determined to turn the capital into a breeding nest. As each case draws her deeper into imperial politics, she begins building the Night Watch Bureau, an institution meant to defend all of Great Jing from the horrors returning to the world. But the more capable she becomes, the more dangerous the enemies watching her—and the harder it is to ignore Shen Yan’s inexplicable devotion.
