I froze.

Just as I was about to turn and retreat to my room, Jiang Tingche’s suppressed voice came from behind me again.

“Did I scare you today?”

“Baby, will you pick up?”

“You promised to stay on the phone with me for an hour tonight. Our time isn’t up yet.”

From beneath the covers in my room came a string of vibrations.

Afraid Jiang Tingche would hear someone outside the bathroom, I tiptoed back to my room and fished my phone out from under the covers. The screen showed an incoming voice call from him.

As I hesitated, the floating comments appeared again.

[Pick up, supporting girl!]

[She’s the one who asked the yandere male lead to call.]

[How can she leave him hanging halfway through?]

[Though the yandere male lead did get a little too excited today.]

[He’s usually not like this.]

[Maybe she flirted way too hard tonight.]

I thought back to an hour ago.

After my shower, with nothing better to do, I had sent my online boyfriend two messages.

[Baby, pop quiz. The most handsome guy at school is called the school hunk.]

[So what do you call the most handsome guy in the whole world?]

His chat window showed that he was typing. Then he deleted whatever he had written and went silent for a long time. Obviously, he had left the app to look up what the question meant.

At last, he replied with a long ellipsis.

[…]

I had been doing my bedtime skincare and had not replied right away. During that time, I heard Jiang Tingche go into the bathroom.

Three minutes later, my online boyfriend sent me a rapid series of messages.

[Baby, do you really want it?]

[Isn’t this moving too fast?]

[Can we call first?]

[Don’t you love my voice the most?]

[Stay on the phone with me for an hour tonight, okay?]

So I had slipped under my covers and accepted his call.

He knew exactly how to tease me, murmuring in that devastating voice as he acted out the intimate routines of a couple. His voice was so good it could get a woman pregnant. I writhed into a knot beneath the blankets.

Then I saw the floating comments and learned that the clingy, possessive yandere on the phone was none other than the man who shared my apartment.

I could hardly believe it.

In my mind, Jiang Tingche was aloof and taciturn, so remote that he seemed beyond anyone’s reach. We had lived together for a year, yet rarely exchanged more than three sentences in a day.

In real life, I was a good girl. After graduating from college, I took a job at a bank. With my thin-framed glasses, I looked quiet and demure.

And truthfully, I was a good girl through and through.

The online relationship had only begun because I was chatting on behalf of the bank president’s daughter.

Her name was Xia Yu, and her family was rich. Working at the bank was merely her way of “experiencing ordinary life.” Her desk was right beside mine.

Six months ago, she had hired me to conduct an online romance for her.

“Sheng Ning, help me seduce someone.”

I refused immediately. “Why should I do it? I’m not even good at that sort of thing.”

Xia Yu had a fiery personality. Every evening after work, she went clubbing with her friends. She lived to have fun.

“That man is extremely guarded. He blocked me after two messages,” she said. “I’m impatient. I don’t have the time or temperament to court him online. Besides, I have endless parties every night. When would I ever find time for an online boyfriend?”

“I’ll register a new account. You talk to him for me, and once you’ve won him over, hand him to me. I won’t make you work for free, of course.”

“Aren’t you short on money lately? I’ll give you fifty thousand as a deposit and another fifty thousand when it’s done.”

I really had needed money then, so I agreed.

The account was registered with Xia Yu’s identity. Its profile picture was a side-view photo of her in a bar. In it, she wore a skintight camisole and absurdly short denim shorts. Leaning against the bar in a baseball cap, she gazed carelessly down at the glass in her hand.

Her face was hidden, but the feather tattoo on the back of her shoulder was clearly visible. She chose the username “A Feather” to match.

I logged into her account and added the man she wanted.

His handle was “Crystal Clear.”

Xia Yu had specifically instructed me to flirt with him in her personality. Otherwise, once I handed my online boyfriend back, the difference would expose us.

So I buried my good-girl nature and deliberately adopted a bold, provocative persona.

It took me three months of pursuit before he finally agreed to be my boyfriend.

Three months ago, I had intended to return the account to Xia Yu. She claimed she was too busy and asked me to keep talking to him for three more months.

During those months, my once-cold boyfriend grew clingy and possessive. After learning that I had a weakness for voices, he sent me a voice message late one night.

“Baby, do you like my voice?”

His low, husky voice held a clear, cool note that was unbearably seductive. I immediately burrowed under my covers and started a voice call.

At first, we only talked normally. Gradually, normal conversation stopped satisfying me.

He gave me anything I asked for.

If the floating comments had not spoiled the truth, I never would have recognized Jiang Tingche as my online boyfriend. Jiang Tingche spoke with distant, icy reserve, while my boyfriend was a clingy yandere. It was nearly impossible to connect the two.
