My hair was thoroughly tangled around the bra hook, making it a pain to free.

Su Wangui worked at it for ages.

Her slightly rough fingertips grazed my skin from time to time, tickling me.

“Sis, is it done?”

“Done.”

She stepped back half a pace.

Delighted, I immediately reached behind myself to pull it off.

But something tugged my hair again.

“Sis! I think there’s still some hair caught. Help me look!”

Su Wangui silently stepped forward. “There isn’t any hair caught in the back.”

“The front. Help me look at the front!”

“…”

“Turn around. Move the loose hair to the back yourself.”

I quickly turned to face her.

Even someone as carefree as me felt a little embarrassed now.

But we were both girls. Surely it was fine.

A decorative bow on the bra had snagged a lock of hair.

Su Wangui raised her hand to free it.

Her fingers were much longer than mine, and deft too. She untangled it in no time.

No longer held in place, the bra fell straight down. Su Wangui froze.

I thanked her softly. “Thank you, Sis.”

“…”

Without a word, she turned and left.

I caught a glimpse of her ears. They were so red it was almost unbelievable.

The little washroom Su Wangui had built was crude.

It only had a curtain for a door, but there was a drainage channel and an unsteady light bulb overhead.

For such a backward village, it was convenient enough.

The trouble was, the tiny room felt damp and gloomy, as though a snake or bug might slither out at any moment.

Terrified, I splashed my face with cold water.

Footsteps sounded outside.

“Hot water, Su Man.”

“Thank you, Sis.”

I reached out and took it.

Su Wangui made to leave, but I hurriedly stopped her.

“Sis, could you come in for a moment? I know you don’t want to bathe together, but I can’t rinse my hair properly by myself. I need your help.”

Her footsteps stopped outside the curtain.

“…Fine.”

When Su Wangui lifted the curtain and came in, I hurried over to her.

“Love you, love you. You’re the best.”

Her throat seemed uncomfortable; her voice came out a little hoarse.

“Lower your head. Give me the dipper.”

I obediently handed it to her and bent forward. Soon, warm water was rinsing the shampoo suds from my hair.

The temperature was just right.

But something seemed to land on me that was a tiny bit hotter than the water.

I wiped my face and looked up in confusion.

All I saw was Su Wangui. In the flickering light, I couldn’t make out the emotion in her eyes.

They looked dark and heavy.

“Do you need more rinsing?”

“No, it’s clean. Thank you, Sis.”

“Then I’m leaving.”

“Okay.”

I stepped forward to take the dipper from her, but the suds underfoot hadn’t been washed away. My foot slipped.

I was about to land hard on my backside.

Su Wangui yanked me into her arms, catching me against her.

Our chests collided squarely.

We both hissed in pain at the same time.

But the moment I found my footing and tried to apologize, she snatched her hands away and hurried out.

“Finish quickly. I’ll wait outside and bring you more water.”

“O-okay.”

I stared at the curtain, wondering if she was angry, but I didn’t dare lift it.

I could only see my own curvaceous silhouette cast across the curtain by that battered bulb.

Ugh.

Why did I keep doing stupid things and causing her trouble?

Once we’d bathed one after the other, Su Wangui locked the door and lay down on the bed.

I’d been away from the Su family for less than a day, yet it felt as though I’d already endured half a lifetime of hardship.

I sighed.

I glanced at the girl lying flat beside me with her eyes closed. Still feeling aggrieved and miserable, I soon fell asleep too.

Half awake, I rolled over.

My leg naturally—and brazenly—flopped onto something.

A cool female voice immediately sounded beside me.

“Su Man, move your leg.”

I opened my eyes blearily and woke to find my leg sprawled boldly across Su Wangui.

It was extremely disrespectful.

I withdrew it sheepishly and apologized.

“Sorry, Sis. I sleep a little wildly. I’ll do my best to control myself.”

Su Wangui closed her eyes again.

I pinched my leg and silently lectured it for ages. Soon, I drifted back to sleep.

But a mosquito kept buzzing by my ear.

Bzzzz. Bzzzz.

It was maddening.

I mumbled and waved a hand, trying to shoo it away, but it didn’t work.

The mosquito continued to target me.

It bit my face, leaving a painful, swollen bump.

I was too sleepy even to open my eyes. Thinking it was all a dream, I scratched at my face and instinctively scooted away.

This time, I scooted right into someone’s arms.

About a minute later, someone caught my scratching hand.

Something cool was dabbed onto my face. Then the person picked something up and gently fanned me.

The mosquito could no longer come near.

I hummed contentedly twice and slept even more soundly.
