Chapter 3

Father Shen eventually arranged my school enrollment.

I would be going to school with Shen Siyi.

On the first day, when the driver came to pick us up, he started the car and drove to school the moment Shen Siyi got in.

I was one step too late. I stood there, staring at the car’s exhaust.

“738, I’m going to be late.”

738: [No rush. Stand here and get ready to take the second car.]

Everyone woke up at different times and had different routines, so Shen Xingyuan and Shen Siyi each had their own car.

I had just pulled open the car door when Shen Xingyuan immediately pressed down on my hand and dragged me back out a little.

“What are you doing?”

“I’m going to be late. Shen Siyi’s car already left.”

Shen Xingyuan frowned. “Did you get up late and make Siyi wait for you?”

I hadn’t. It was just that before I went out, Mother had stopped me to say a few more words. I fell two steps behind Shen Siyi, and when I got outside, I saw the car door slam shut and the car start.

Shen Xingyuan wouldn’t let me get in. He told me to figure it out myself.

“Go tell Mom. This is your own problem.”

[Close your eyes.]

I closed my eyes.

738 opened them coldly. “This is a family car. Any human being can get in.”

Shen Xingyuan’s eyes went wide.

“Shen Xingyi, how can you be so ill-mannered?”

From that alone, it was obvious Shen Xingyuan was the type to speak without thinking. He had completely forgotten whose child I was, and exactly how I had become “ill-mannered.”

738 flung him aside, pulled open the car door, and got in. Whenever 738 controlled my body, I became terrifyingly strong.

Shen Xingyuan staggered and nearly fell flat on his back. Furious and flustered, he climbed in after me, but didn’t dare lay another hand on me.

“I’m telling Mom.”

738 glanced at him.

“Mm. Go tell.”

Shen Xingyuan’s face flushed red. “You think I don’t dare?”

The moment Shen Xingyuan got home, he complained to Mother Shen.

Mother Shen froze for a moment.

She crouched down in front of me and asked, “Xingyi, is what your brother said true?”

I shook my head, my eyes reddening as I said timidly, “Brother said I was ill-mannered… Is it because I just came back, so Brother doesn’t like me? But I haven’t seen Mom and Dad for nine years.”

I read it word by word from the little panel 738 had given me.

738 encouraged me: [Full of emotion. Very well done.]

Mother Shen was shocked. She turned her head. “Xingyuan, how could you say that about your sister? She is your biological sister.”

Her memories from the past had been stirred up, and beneath Mother Shen’s gentle mask, a trace of genuine feeling appeared.

“When you say that about your sister, are you hurting her, or are you hurting your father and me?”

Shen Xingyuan said, “Mom, that’s not what I meant! She-”

“Mom.”

I slowly stood beside Mother Shen and hugged her around the neck.

“Don’t blame Brother. This morning, Mom stopped me to say a couple of things. When I went out, I saw Siyi and the car driving away. I had no choice, so I could only take Brother’s car. Brother didn’t want me to get in, so I just won’t get in anymore.”

Just then, Shen Siyi came back too.

She bounced over to Mother Shen’s side and called out, “Mom.”

Mother Shen looked suspicious. “Siyi, did you refuse to let your sister get in the car this morning?”

Shen Siyi covered her mouth.

“This morning, I told the driver to stop and wait for my sister, but I don’t think he heard me. He forgot.”

Shen Siyi blinked hard, her eyes growing wet.

“I’m sorry, Sister. I didn’t know something like this would happen…”

738 said flatly: [Close your eyes.]

I obediently did as told.

738 opened my eyes and cut straight to the point. “According to you, this was the driver’s fault. The driver refused to wait?”

Shen Siyi stumbled over her words. “Maybe he forgot.”

738 said, “Did he forget, or did you tell him to hurry up and drive away?”

Shen Siyi burst into tears. “I’ve already apologized! What more do you want from me?”

738 let out a scoff.

Mother Shen looked faintly displeased.

She wasn’t stupid either. With the slightest thought, she could tell what had happened. Between an adopted daughter and a biological daughter, no matter how much she doted on the adopted one, she still had to weigh things carefully. Once the adoption was exposed, if people discovered they treated the adopted daughter and the biological daughter differently, public opinion would crush the Shen Family.

I took back control of my body and tilted my head at Shen Siyi. “I’m not blaming you. I just wanted to tell you that I would be late. Don’t do this again next time.”

Shen Siyi opened her mouth, but no words came out.

She wasn’t that scheming yet. All she knew how to do was throw childish tantrums within the limits of her own ability, spoiled and willful with a streak of sharp malice.

In the end, Mother Shen was the one who had spoiled her into this.

Seeing that I wasn’t pursuing the matter, Mother Shen gave me two satisfied looks, and the matter was muddled through.

I returned to my room.

[Are you upset?]

I thought about it.

I was upset, but only a little. I had never seen them love me, and I had never experienced any obvious contrast between being loved and unloved by them.

So in truth, I didn’t care. I didn’t love them either.

Because of my wandering childhood, I matured very early.

738 believed that early maturity wasn’t something to be happy about when it came to me.

On the contrary, it was something to feel heartache over.

Father Shen had told me privately that I was his biological daughter, and that after suffering a bit and returning to a prosperous family, I would better understand the hardships of the human world.

[Humans always take pride in suffering. In reality, the twisted value of taking pride in suffering is the stupidest thing of all. You never should have suffered any of it.]

I comforted 738.

“It’s okay, 738. We made it through.”

738 paused.

[You can tell me anything that makes you unhappy.]

“Then will you always stay by my side?”

738 gave a soft laugh.

[This is the third time you’ve asked.]

I insisted, “Will you?”

[I will.]

In the quiet night, the sudden knock on the door felt eerie.

738 said gently: [Don’t be afraid. I’m here.]

I opened the door a crack.

Shen Siyi handed in a bottle of milk, her head turned away a little awkwardly.

“Sorry.”

I didn’t take it.

Shen Siyi stuffed the milk into my arms, turned, and ran.

She had probably snuck over by herself.

I hesitated for a moment.

“Your slipper fell off.”

Shen Siyi stiffened.

She ran back with her head lowered, picked up the slipper, and fled with determination.
