Chapter 2

At first, I only wanted to tease this strange little thing, then roughly drive it away.

Let me introduce myself. My name is Wen Ning. I’m twenty-eight years old, terminally ill, and about to die.

My career had been cut off, everyone I knew had turned their backs on me, and when I looked at the house I’d bought with this body I had run past its limit, all I felt was that this world was meaningless.

Before I die, I just want to be alone.

For a human whose life was about to come to an end, being a little wicked and teasing an uninvited guest that suddenly appeared in the house shouldn’t be too much… right?

Besides, this creature had moved in without permission and become a tenant.

And all I did was watch it leave disappointed after having its hopes raised. That was already a very gentle “punishment.”

Who hadn’t experienced working hard for nothing?

But Little Jumping Spider didn’t know any of that. It worked very hard, hopping around and waving its eight short, fuzzy little claws left and right until it was panting from exhaustion.

It didn’t know the cruelty of a human’s careless teasing.

It only put everything it had into every chance, and after failing to win approval, it began to doubt itself.

From cute and lively… to a little stone doubting life itself.

I had thought that, in the face of life and death, my heart had already grown as cold as a fish-slicing knife.

So why, when it came to this tiny life curled up into a ball, did I feel a little sad for no reason at all?

Did I… do something wrong?

“Did I do something wrong?”

Huh?

Something sounded out together with the voice in my heart. Little Jumping Spider sniffled and sobbed, finally gathering the courage to raise its head and look at me.

Twelve eyes met.

Ah… damn.

All eight of its eyes were crying at once, and a puddle had already formed beneath it!

The fur on its abdomen was pitifully stuck together. Little Jumping Spider had all eight little claws pressed under its belly as it curled up in the tiny puddle and said in a dejected voice, “I’m sorry. This was my first time doing a courtship dance. Was I… too bad…?”

Maybe because it was too heartbroken, it started shedding fur like crazy.

“Not bad.”

The words slipped out. This time, my mouth was much faster than my brain.

Little Jumping Spider was very good.

Maybe I was the one who was bad.

“If you really want to stay, that’s fine too.”

I turned my head away, then smiled in that weird, creepy way again.

“But… Little Jumping Spider, this little bit of rent isn’t enough.”
