Chapter 11

The real trouble found its way to my doorstep just when I thought my life was finally starting to improve.

Deep Tide Biotech had collapsed, but the fallout was so massive that many in the industry were looking to scavenge the remains.

Some wanted to buy the experimental data, others wanted to quietly make off with the remaining samples, and some even wanted to rebrand Pei Yuming as a “victim-genius scientist” for a commercial persona.

The first to arrive was an independent online media team.

They immediately offered a high interview fee, claiming they wanted to “give me a voice” and help me tell the story of a common girl bravely fighting against corporate giants.

I asked them how they planned to write the piece.

The editor-in-chief smiled and said, “The focus isn’t on how disgusting the lab was. The focus is on whether there was any… romantic tension between you and that monster. That’s what readers crave these days.”

I slammed the door in their faces.

The second wave consisted of headhunters.

They said a company was willing to hire me at a high salary for crisis public relations because “you already draw an audience, and you have a compelling story.”

I told them I wasn’t interested.

The other party gave a meaningful smile. “Miss Han, with all the attention you’re getting, isn’t it a waste not to monetize it?”

I found it utterly absurd.

These people were essentially no different from Su Jingyao.

One used technology to harvest people.

The other used stories to harvest people.

Neither cared if you were in pain; they only cared about how much you were worth.

Because I refused so many of them, someone eventually lost their patience.

One evening, as I was returning home from a stretching class, I saw a black commercial van parked downstairs.

The window rolled down, revealing a middle-aged man I had never seen before.

“Miss Han, can we talk?”

I didn’t move.

He handed me a business card; he was a director at an investment firm.

“The materials left behind by Engineer Pei are very valuable. We won’t touch you; we just want the samples. Name your price.”

Motiao was tucked inside my coat pocket, its entire body tensing up.

I tore the business card in half.

“Get lost.”

His expression darkened.

“You’re just an ordinary person. You can’t protect something like this.”

I stared at him and suddenly laughed.

“Who said I’m an ordinary person?”

“Just a month ago, I brought down a listed company.”

As soon as the words left my mouth, a thin tentacle silently snaked out of my pocket and wrapped around the car door handle.

The next second, the van’s entire onboard system went black. Alarms blared, and the doors automatically locked.

The middle-aged man’s face turned pale as he pounded frantically on the window.

I took two steps back and gave him a wave.

“Take your time fixing that.”

In that moment, I truly realized that I, too, could feel a sense of triumph.

It wasn’t about earning someone’s praise for being “sensible” through silent endurance.

It was about having someone on my side, and finally learning to stand on my own side as well.

However, when we got home, Motiao didn’t try to claim credit like it usually did.

It lay quietly on the table, seemingly lost in thought.

Just as I was about to ask what was wrong, I saw it type a sentence on the phone.

“They won’t stop.”

“As long as I am here, you will always be in danger.”

My heart sank.

It slowly wrote more.

“Maybe I should leave.”

In that instant, it felt as if someone had violently stabbed me in the chest.
