Chapter 2

When I arrived at the company the next day, I realized Motiao’s warning hadn’t been a casual remark.

At ten in the morning, Xu Yichuan called me into a conference room, saying he wanted to “discuss the details of the proposal privately.”

As soon as the door closed, he started by praising my hard work lately, saying I was the one the entire team had the highest hopes for.

Before I even had a chance to feel touched, he rested his hand on my shoulder. His fingertips pressed down slightly, sliding toward the inside of my shirt collar.

“Shuwan, your proposal is actually quite good.”

“But you know how it is. The final decision-maker on the client’s side prefers girls who are a bit more… flexible.”

My entire body froze.

He was standing too close. The scent of his cologne was so thick it tasted bitter.

I instinctively took a step back, but he just smiled, as if he were teasing a small, tactless animal.

“Don’t be so nervous. I’m just reminding you that the workplace isn’t school.”

“Sometimes, working hard a hundred times isn’t as good as seizing a single opportunity.”

My stomach churned, and I nearly threw up on the spot.

Just then, a faint vibration came from my bag.

It was the positioning box I had bought for Motiao. Usually, it stayed curled up inside sleeping, only moving when it was hungry.

The next second, the large screen in the conference room suddenly lit up on its own.

The projector, which had been on standby, jumped straight into an audio recording.

Xu Yichuan’s voice rang out clearly. It was from a drinking session last week.

“Han Shuwan is the easiest type to manipulate. She’s desperate for money, and her family is a total drag.”

“Push her a little, and she’ll do anything.”

As the recording played, Xu Yichuan’s face turned pale instantly.

He lunged forward to turn it off, but the screen began flashing a series of screenshots.

There was a list of names he had sent to clients for ‘hostess’ duties, chat logs of him ordering interns to buy hangover medicine in the middle of the night, and digital receipts of his fraudulent expense reports.

The people outside the conference room were all alerted.

Some peered through the glass, while others had already started raising their phones to record.

I stood there in a daze, my mind a total blank.

Xu Yichuan lunged at me, grabbing my wrist. He hissed through gritted teeth, “Did you do this?”

His grip was terrifyingly strong; I could feel the bones in my hand aching.

At that moment, the zipper of my bag split open with a sharp *zip*.

A long, thin black tentacle whipped out like a lash. It coiled precisely around the back of Xu Yichuan’s hand and gave a violent twist.

He let out a blood-curdling scream as his wrist swelled up instantly.

Screams erupted from the onlookers, and everyone scrambled back.

Motiao landed on the conference table. Its body had already doubled in size compared to three months ago.

It propped itself up halfway, its surface shimmering with a cold, damp light, looking like a mass of living darkness.

Xu Yichuan stared at it, his expression suddenly becoming extremely ugly.

It wasn’t just simple fear.

It looked more like he recognized it.

“Impossible…”

“How could it be with her?”

My heart sank abruptly.

Motiao ignored him. It simply turned around and used a tentacle to gently pat my reddened wrist.

It seemed to be asking if it hurt.

Realizing he had slipped up, Xu Yichuan immediately changed his tune and roared at the people outside, “Security! Get this damn thing out of her bag!”

But no one dared to step forward.

His recordings and screenshots were still plastered on the screen; every single one of them was enough to ruin him.

I suddenly understood.

Motiao hadn’t just been giving me a random warning.

It knew what Xu Yichuan was going to do.

In fact, it had probably been targeting him for a long time.

After the incident blew up, HR spoke to Xu Yichuan and me separately.

He insisted that the recording was synthesized and the screenshots were forged. He also accused me of bringing a dangerous animal into the office, claiming I was a threat to workplace safety.

I showed them the bruises on my wrist and asked, “So, was his groping synthesized too?”

The room fell silent for a moment.

In the end, the company decided to put Xu Yichuan on “suspension pending investigation.” I was also asked to work from home temporarily until things settled down.

To put it bluntly, they didn’t want to offend either side.

When I carried Motiao home, my entire body was shaking.

It wasn’t from fear.

It was the delayed onset of grievance and indignation.

After entering the house, I placed it on the dining table and stared at it for a long time.

“What exactly are you?”

Motiao raised a tentacle and slowly tapped open the photo gallery on my phone.

Then, it pulled up a screenshot of a news report.

A missing person’s notice.

The man in the photo wore a white lab coat. His features were cold and detached. His name was Pei Yuming.

The caption below read: Chief Research Engineer at Deep Tide Biotech, went missing three months ago.

And below the news article was a line of small text-a note I had never seen before last night.

“I used to be him.”

I felt completely numb.

“Used to be?”

Motiao typed very slowly, as if fighting against some kind of intense pain.

“Now, I am not sure what I am.”
