Chapter 8

Su Jingyao had probably never seen someone like me-someone who earned four thousand eight hundred a month but acted like they had eighteen thousand worth of crazy in them.

After I smashed a whole row of his equipment, he finally lost his patience completely.

Security personnel swarmed in from both sides, still wielding those silver syringes.

This time, I didn’t dodge.

I rammed the cart forward, slamming into them while simultaneously slapping every emergency release valve on the experimental pods I passed.

Ear-splitting alarms began to wail, one after another.

One by one, the pod doors hissed open.

The people trapped inside-some unconscious, some too weak to stand-began to crawl out by instinct.

The scene descended into instant chaos.

Su Jingyao roared, “Get her first!”

Motiao swept out like a black storm.

Stimulated by the drugs, its state was clearly unstable; the edges of its tentacles were even beginning to crumble. Yet, every time it struck an attacker, it was with terrifying precision.

It was using the last of its lucidity to clear a path for me.

I rushed toward the main console and slammed the tablet into the authorization port.

A verification window immediately popped up on the screen.

[Please input Controller iris or biometric scan.]

I gritted my teeth and looked back. “Su Jingyao!”

Realizing what I was about to do, he turned to flee.

I lunged forward and tackled him around the waist.

“Pei Yuming!”

In the next second, Motiao swept down from the air. Several tentacles firmly locked onto Su Jingyao’s limbs and neck, pinning him against the scanning area.

He finally panicked.

That refined, dignified facade shattered instantly, leaving behind nothing but naked terror.

“Pei Yuming, you’re insane! Stop! If you start the Termination Program, the Main Sample will be wiped along with everything else!”

Motiao didn’t look at him.

It simply, quietly shielded me between itself and the console.

Just like every night in the past, when it had blocked the cramps and the pain for me.

Scan passed.

The final prompt flashed on the screen.

[Execute global termination of the Deep Tide Project?]

The ten-second countdown began.

Su Jingyao began to struggle desperately, his voice cracking.

“Han Shuwan! Do you have any idea what you’re destroying?!”

“You wouldn’t earn a tenth of what’s in here in your entire life!”

I stared at him, enunciating every word.

“That’s fine.”

“I’d rather die penniless than sell my life to someone like you.”

I hit confirm.

Every screen on the laboratory floor went black instantly.

Every server emitted a sharp, prolonged drone before shutting down one by one.

The locks on the experimental pods all snapped open, and the tubes detached automatically.

And in my arms, Motiao suddenly convulsed.

As if being torn apart from the inside, its entire body began to disintegrate. Black fragments fell away like cold, damp ash.

“Pei Yuming!”

I reached out to hold it, but my hands were filled with nothing but scalding debris.

It lifted its last intact tentacle and gently touched the back of my neck.

Just like the first time it had set my bones.

My phone screen lit up.

It was the last message it would ever leave me in this life-or at least, in this form.

“Han Shuwan.”

“From now on, don’t just endure the pain.”

In the next second, it completely dissolved in my arms.
