Chapter 1

I pinched Tu Laoliu hard. “Hand over the money!”

Tu Laoliu slapped my hand away. “You damn hag! I’ve only got two taels of silver in my pocket. If we buy medicine for this brat, we won’t even have travel money to get back to the stronghold!”

I snatched his shabby coin pouch. “We already saved him. You’re really fussing over a little money now? We’ll make him earn it back for us later.”

I went into the apothecary and bought a small bottle of outrageously expensive wound powder, then had them prepare three packets of herbs to nourish the blood and replenish qi. By the time I came back out, I had only twenty copper coins left in my hand.

Cursing the whole way, Tu Laoliu took me to buy ten steamed buns, two flatbreads, and three boiled eggs.

When we returned to the ruined temple, eight-year-old Lu Tianxing still hadn’t woken up.

His tiny body was curled up on a pile of withered grass. The blood on his clothes had already dried, and his face was ashen. He looked like he was about to breathe his last any second.

The thought of this brat becoming some great righteous hero in his past life, killing the two of us without so much as blinking, made me grit my teeth with hatred.

“Damn it all. In this life, we absolutely can’t let him learn swordsmanship again. Getting stabbed hurts like hell!”

Tu Laoliu sneered. “As if we could teach him even if we wanted to. One of us only knows how to swing a broadsword, and the other only knows how to smash things with an iron hammer. What the hell could we teach him?”

He had a point.

After all, the two of us were bandits. We had never learned any proper martial arts, nothing like the famous master he’d had in his past life-the Leader of the Martial Alliance.

When I applied the wound powder to Lu Tianxing, the pain woke him up.

A pair of bright black eyes glared at us warily. “Who are you people?”

Tu Laoliu let out a sinister cackle. “We are Black and White Impermanence, here to claim your life! Kneel and beg for mercy!”

Lu Tianxing glanced at the powder on his wounds, then lifted his head expressionlessly. “Black and White Impermanence save people now?”

I held out my hand. “We spent ten taels of silver saving you. Pay up.”

Lu Tianxing’s eyes widened. “Ten taels? Are you robbing me?”

I gave a sinister cackle too. “Can’t pay? Then become our son and work off your debt. Heh heh!”

Lu Tianxing: “…”

And so, the penniless young Light of the Righteous Path became our adopted son.

Chapter 2

With the money gone, we had no choice but to walk back to the stronghold.

The outrageously expensive wound powder worked wonders. Lu Tianxing’s injuries healed quickly, and soon he could stand.

Tu Laoliu wove a long rope out of reeds, tied one end around Lu Tianxing’s waist, and kept the other end in his own hand in case the boy ran off.

Lu Tianxing was furious. “Let me go. I’m not a dog!”

Tu Laoliu looked down on him. “Of course you’re not. A dog can keep watch at night. What can you do?”

Lu Tianxing had no answer.

Because when we slept out in a cave that night, he was so tired and hungry that he slept like the dead.

Tu Laoliu and I took turns guarding the fire and keeping the wolves away.

There were still bruises on Lu Tianxing’s face, so I peeled a boiled egg and rolled it over the wounds.

Lu Tianxing stared at me blankly. “Why are you being so good to me?”

I bared my teeth in a grin. “Because you’ve got nice, delicate features. I’m taking you back so my daughter can have a look. If she takes a fancy to you, you’ll be her child husband.”

Lu Tianxing reached out and threw the egg away.

Tu Laoliu caught it, rinsed it several times in spring water, and stuffed it into my mouth. “Chan Niang, he’s just an ungrateful little wolf cub. You’d better eat it yourself.”

But the next day, when I brought out an egg as usual to roll over Lu Tianxing’s bruises, he merely pretended not to see it and didn’t stop me.

Once we entered the mountains, Tu Laoliu kicked him off to hunt. “Your mother is hungry. Go get us some meat!”

The injuries on Lu Tianxing’s face had completely healed, and the wounds on his body were half recovered. At this point, he was actually the strongest among us.

He glanced at me.

On the way here, he had needed to recover from his wounds. Tu Laoliu had to keep an eye on him while clearing the path, and the two of them had eaten up all the dry rations.

As for me, I’d only eaten three eggs and one flatbread-and the flatbread had been soaked in water. I had long since turned sallow and gaunt.

Damn it, I was getting ugly!

Lu Tianxing took the slingshot and dagger from my bundle and said to me, “I’ll go catch rabbits. Wait here. Don’t wander off.”

We didn’t have the strength to wander anywhere.

On the other hand, if he wanted to run, we could no longer stop him.

But an hour later, he came back carrying three sparrows, two wild rabbits, and one pheasant.

Tu Laoliu stared until his eyes went straight. “Damn it, is this the power of the male lead? How old is he? How can he hunt this much?”

The two of us exchanged another look. We were finished. The Light of the Righteous Path had extraordinary talent. What if he grew up into a rebellious son?
