Chapter 2

It was a pity I only managed to read two pages before the bell rang. I had no choice but to hide the book under my textbook and sneak peeks during class.

In the book, my brother and I were absolute menaces.

He committed murder and arson while suppressing the male lead, and I spent my time being jealous and kidnapping the female lead. In the end, we were both sent to prison.

If it weren’t for the fact that we were different genders, we probably would have ended up sharing a bunk bed.

I was reading with great interest when I flipped the page.

The book stated-

The male and female leads grew up in the same orphanage. They were beaten from a young age and lived a life where they went hungry five times every three days.

The two of them depended on each other as their only support. It wasn’t until they were later adopted by two different families that their lives improved slightly.

But only slightly.

Xie Yu’an’s adoptive mother was extremely controlling. She didn’t allow Xie Yu’an to lock his door and checked his phone every single day. If Xie Yu’an so much as said an extra word to anyone, she would make a scene at the school.

In this way, she forced Xie Yu’an to become an emotionally detached person with a closed-off heart.

It wasn’t until many years later, with the help of the female lead, that Xie Yu’an slowly stepped out of the shadows.

So Xie Yu’an lived such a miserable life, yet I actually did so many wicked things to bully him. I…

I really am a cold-blooded, heartless femme fatale!

Swish-

The book in my hand was suddenly snatched away.

Ms. Yu was fuming, glaring down at me.

“Shen Sui, think you’re capable now? You dare read a novel during my class? It’s confiscated. Come find me and get it back after you graduate.”

My eyes immediately welled up with tears.

That won’t work.

What if my brother and I don’t even survive until graduation?

Ms. Yu gave a cold sneer.

“Crying won’t help. Get out and stand in the hallway!”

I hung my head and shuffled out one step at a time.

Suddenly, a cool, indifferent voice sounded behind me.

“Sorry, Teacher. I lent that book to her.”

Xie Yu’an glanced at me without much emotion and said to Ms. Yu, “Could you please return the book to me?”

Two minutes later.

Xie Yu’an and I were standing outside the classroom together.

Of course, the book wasn’t returned.

The sunlight was just right, and a warm breeze made me feel drowsy.

I scratched my cheek and asked, “Why did you help me? And why did you say it was your book?”

Xie Yu’an stood there looking quite handsome, leaning on one leg.

“I got tired of sitting. I wanted to come out and stand for a bit.”

…Alright then.

The male lead’s level of thinking was indeed beyond the reach of a lowly villainous supporting character like me.

The rich fragrance of osmanthus drifted over.

My eyes lit up, and I pointed at the osmanthus tree downstairs. “Look, the osmanthus is blooming! Let’s go pick some later and dry them. I’m telling you, the osmanthus cakes my mom makes are delicious. You can try making some when you go home…”

I was chattering away excitedly, but when I turned to look at Xie Yu’an, I saw a slight daze in his expression, as if he were lost in thought.

I froze, remembering Xie Yu’an’s family situation, and gave myself a light slap.

Stupid mouth, why did you have to bring that up!

I quickly tried to fix it: “No, no, no, don’t go home. Just come to my house! You’re so thin, I’m sure my mom won’t mind an extra mouth to feed.”

Xie Yu’an’s eyes flickered, and he looked like he wanted to say something.

I looked at him expectantly.

Quick, say yes, say yes!

Once you’ve eaten my mom’s osmanthus cakes, you won’t be allowed to beat me up anymore.

“I…” Xie Yu’an spoke up hesitantly.

I nodded encouragingly at him.

Say it! Say it out loud!

Suddenly, Ms. Yu pulled open the classroom door. She poked my head hard twice and launched into a lecture.

“The two of you are actually chatting out here?! Do you think this is a wet market or a park?”

Damn it, of all the times!

I submissively lowered my head like a frightened quail.

After standing for an entire class period, I was further punished by being sent to the playground to sweep fallen leaves all morning.
