Chapter 3

In the dead of night, I followed behind Lou Zhan, both of us sneaking around like thieves.

“Hey, you up front,” I lowered my voice, “not to put too fine a point on it, but do we really have to save him? I’m just a measly Foundation Establishment cultivator, big brother!”

If a cultivator was trapped, he’d have to be at least at Foundation Establishment to even qualify as trapped, right? And by extension, the one trapping him would be Foundation Establishment+ at minimum!

If the two of us barged in like this, weren’t we just delivering cultivation resources right to them?

Lou Zhan was a demon god, and later he’d become one of the female lead’s harem members, so he wouldn’t die here.

But I was just a cannon fodder female supporting character!

Wait, I had a contract with Lou Zhan, so now we were bound together. If I died, he couldn’t live either.

Thinking that way, I probably wouldn’t kick the bucket tonight.

With that, I felt a bit more at ease.

We turned left and right for a long time, my head nearly spinning into a daze.

Lou Zhan suddenly stopped.

“Found it.”

I stared blankly at the several giant swill buckets stacked in front of me.

“In… which bucket?”

“Under the buckets.”

Silence filled the deep alley in the night.

Lou Zhan crouched on my foot.

“What are you standing there for? You didn’t expect me to move them, did you?”

As he spoke, he raised both of his front paws.

Fine, I’d go all out. Maybe there was a tremendous opportunity waiting for me down there.

Enduring the stench, I moved the swill buckets to the entrance of the alley, and I had to do it without making a sound. If I woke up the people living nearby, the city patrol would surely haul me away.

After moving the buckets, I saw a hidden door in the ground.

Lou Zhan was two meters away, and probably because I looked so timid, he couldn’t help but speak up.

“Open the door and go down to rescue him. Don’t worry, there’s no one guarding below.”

Carefully, I pulled open the door, my heart brimming with unease. I turned back to confirm with Lou Zhan once more.

“Are you sure?”

His answer was a heavy kick to my lower back.

“Down you go!”

The hidden passage was a staircase sloping downward. I tumbled all the way down, and my backside nearly split into four.

I only came to a halt when the stairs ended.

It was pitch black all around, not even moonlight could reach in.

I smelled a very strange odor, like sea breeze, but more briny than sea breeze.

The sound of dripping water reached my ears.

I fished a Blazing Cloud Pearl out of my storage pouch and lit it with spiritual power.

The sight before me seized my breath.

A merperson was suspended by the waist from a beam.

His upper body was bare, his skin pale and bloodless, and his lower body ended in a nearly transparent silvery-white fish tail.

But the tail was mottled and damaged, the scales in disarray, almost more than half of them stripped away.

The scale-less parts were covered in blue liquid, some still oozing out.

I suddenly recalled that merpeople’s blood is blue.

Holding up the pearl, I walked over and accidentally kicked something, causing a crisp sound.

I bent down to look and realized there were two bowls on the floor.

The bowl under the fish tail held blue merperson blood, while the one in front contained a milky white liquid.

Following the direction of the bowls, I leaned in to see what it was, and just then a drop of the white liquid fell onto my cheek, then trickled toward the corner of my mouth.

I stuck out my tongue and licked-it was sweet.

Sweet?

I snapped my head up, and my face burned hot.

“What are you dawdling for? Did something happen?”

Lou Zhan called out softly from the entrance.

“N-nothing! Don’t come down! I’ll be done soon!”

Lou Zhan muttered something and urged me to hurry.

I wiped the milk stain off my face. Just as I was about to straighten up, a hoarse voice suddenly spoke by my ear.

“You… who are you?”

Startled, I looked up and met a pair of inky blue eyes.

Those eyes were brimming with too many emotions-confusion, bewilderment, hope, shame…

I quickly lowered my head.

“D-don’t be afraid, miss. I’m not a bad person. Don’t make a sound, I’ll get you out of here.”
