I had only made it halfway through cursing him in my head when something landed heavily on my foot.

Warm softness pressed against my leg through the fabric of my robe, as if some fluffy creature had wrapped itself around my calf.

I looked down in a daze.

A spirit beast no taller than my shin sat on my foot. It craned its head back, staring at me with clear, solemn amber eyes—like I was a treasure it had lost and miraculously found again.

Perhaps sensing my agitation, it cautiously rubbed its plump little face against me.

The spot it nuzzled prickled and tingled. My whole body went rigid, and I could not suppress a hiss.

The creature blinked and hugged me even tighter, as though it knew I might shake it off.

I laughed in fury.

With one hand around the little horn on its head and the other gripping its tail, I expertly hoisted it upside down.

The spirit beast paused in suspicious stillness. Then, belatedly remembering to panic, it began flailing all four legs.

I tugged at the corner of my mouth, satisfied, and said in my most vicious voice, “The dead man didn’t come back, but you, you ungrateful little beast, did.”

When I was young, people had called me a beast too.

My true form was a demon-corrupted qilin.

But the old man who brought me back to Qingyun Sect insisted that I was an auspicious qilin, a creature born to bring good fortune. According to him, the demons had abducted me.

They had taken me while I was still inside my egg and soaked me in the pitch-black waters of the Heavenly Demon Pool. Endless demonic energy ate into my spiritual meridians, while slaughter and malice flooded my unformed consciousness.

They remade me into a savage creature that knew nothing but evil.

The old man planted an immortal seal in my soul to suppress the demonic energy. Then, while I was too hungry to resist, he forced my head down and made me kowtow to him.

Just like that, I became his youngest disciple.

He warned me that if I ever broke through the seal and used demonic power to commit evil, the energy would explode and grind me to dust.

Only then did he dare bring me back to the sect.

He was too lazy to look after me himself, so he tossed me at his eldest disciple as casually as one might abandon a stray cat or dog.

When I landed in that bamboo-scented embrace, the fragrance stunned me.

Then fear seized me, and I began to struggle.

I clawed the jade-like man until half his body was streaked with blood. He never loosened his hold. Instead, his arms only tightened.

The hand stroking my head was warm and gentle, soothing me again and again as if I were a disobedient kitten.

“It’s all right. You’re safe now.”

“From now on, Senior Brother is here. No one will ever bully you again.”

He lied.

Senior Brother would leave.

Senior Brother was the one who bullied me most.

Wetness on my face dragged me out of the chaotic dream.

With one hand, I pinned down the spirit beast licking me. With the other, I straightened the collar it had nosed open and rose with a dark expression.

The creature before me resembled both a dragon and a sheep. It had curled horns and soft, fluffy wool, but the body of a dragon whelp, complete with a long tail and four clawed feet.

It was the initiation gift Senior Brother had given me in my first year at the sect.

When he placed it in my arms with a smile, he told me its name was Yin-Yu. Its kind was unique; no second creature like it existed beneath heaven or upon the earth.

That was how I knew this spirit beast that had suddenly emerged from the formation had to be the same little traitor who had abandoned me with Senior Brother.

After Senior Brother perished, it had weakened and disappeared within days.

Naturally, I hated it too.

My dream had been interrupted, and the resentment in my chest needed an outlet. I glared at the beast.

“Little wretch. Who gave you permission to lick me in my sleep?”

“We’ll settle old scores and new together. He’s not here now. Let’s see who can protect you.”

I viciously tugged one of its triangular ears.

It whimpered and threw itself into my arms, trembling all over as though the pain were unbearable. Those amber eyes, so like Senior Brother’s, brimmed with tears.

I gave a pleased hum.

“Lick me again, and I’ll pull out your tongue and feed it to the dogs.”

The moment I finished speaking, it gave the back of my hand one soft lick.

I stared at it.

I was a mature, dignified savage beast. I was not going to bicker with a stupid little spirit beast.
