The Young Lady's Nanny - Chapter 3
Chapter 7
In the young lady’s second year at the private school, she had a falling-out with her close friend.
At the time, Miss Xu was yearning for the romances she read in storybooks, shedding tender tears over the trials of poor scholars and wealthy young ladies.
The young lady shattered her fantasies with cold, merciless precision. “If that scholar were truly a good man, he wouldn’t have coaxed a wealthy young lady into running away from home just to follow him into a life where they never knew where their next meal was coming from. That isn’t love. That’s abduction.”
“You should read fewer of those storybooks. They’re bad for your brain.”
Miss Xu was so angry that she hauled out every storybook she owned. “Nonsense! I have so many storybooks. There must be some good ones.”
“Look at this Buddhist holy man…”
The young lady cut straight to the point. “If he’s a Buddhist holy man, why is he getting tangled up in worldly affairs after taking the tonsure? The most laughable part is that he was clearly the one who fell in love first and approached her, yet in the end he pushed all the blame onto the girl. His intentions are rotten.”
“And look at this beggar. He used his wife’s family to rise through the ranks, then once he got his hands on the family property, he found some random excuse to divorce her. Truly despicable.”
“…”
The young lady laid out the evidence one point at a time until Miss Xu was so furious she burst into tears.
“Ye Yun! Don’t you read storybooks too? How are yours any different from mine?”
The young lady carefully wiped away her tears, took her hand, and led her home. “Come on. I’ll show you the special storybooks we have at my house.”
That night, when I took out the storybooks, Miss Xu was still unconvinced. “They don’t look any different.”
But once I began telling the first story, her eyes grew wider and wider. “Nanny, the story you’re telling is so new and interesting. I’ve never heard anything like it before.”
“Can you tell me another one? Please? Pretty please?”
The young lady pressed a hand over her eyes and shut them for her. “If you like them, you can take a few books home with you. But it’s time to sleep now. Master will be asking questions tomorrow.”
At the mention of Master, Miss Xu quieted down and obediently closed her eyes.
I looked at the two little girls lying side by side, and an inexplicable sense of pride welled up in my heart.
There was one more person who enjoyed adapted stories now.
Chapter 8
Aside from educating her mind, we did not dare neglect her physical strength either.
The master arranged a dedicated martial arts instructor for the young lady. Every day, without fail, she practiced for a full hour to strengthen her body.
The tiny little girl held a horse stance beneath the sun, sweat sliding down her cheeks and striking the ground, leaving tiny marks behind.
Madam stood watch at the side. “Nanny, look at that sword. It’s even bigger than Yun’er.”
“Who knows how old she’ll have to be before she can lift it.”
She smiled as she spoke, but soon her eyes reddened again. “Nanny, it’s my fault. I can’t protect her.”
“She’s still so young, yet she already has to work so hard…”
Hearing her sobs, the young lady came pattering over. “Mother, don’t cry. Yun’er isn’t tired. Yun’er likes learning martial arts. If I learn martial arts, I can protect the people around me.”
“Last time, someone at the private school bullied Qing’er. As soon as I stepped in, I beat him. Qing’er admires me so much now. She keeps saying she wants to learn martial arts too.”
Qing’er was Miss Xu.
This attempt at comfort failed to soothe Madam. Instead, it only made her cry harder.
