Three Lives of Fortune - Chapter 1
Chapter 1
I died.
People say that after death, you enter the Underworld. It turns out the old saying was right.
I stood in line until I reached the massive cauldron belonging to Meng Po.
The fellow in front of me was grabbed by the neck and forced to gulp down a bowl. Three seconds later, Meng Po asked him, “What is your name?”
The man looked dazed. “I… I don’t really remember.”
Meng Po nodded with satisfaction. “Good. Next.”
It was my turn.
As Meng Po prepared to pour me a bowl, I quickly raised my hand. “Don’t trouble yourself, sister. I’ll do it myself.”
I downed the bowl of Meng Po Soup in one go.
The portion was quite generous.
I let out a long, loud burp and handed the bowl back.
Then, I stared awkwardly at Meng Po, waiting for her to ask the question.
Three seconds later, Meng Po spoke. “What is your name?”
I thought about it. “Zhu Huanyan.”
Meng Po instinctively waved me along. “Good. Next… Wait, what did you say?!”
Startled, Meng Po hastily handed me another bowl. “Have another one.”
I drank another bowl of the thick soup.
“What is your name?”
“Zhu Huanyan.”
“Have another. What is your name?”
“Zhu Huanyan.”
“Another.”
…
“Another.”
I looked at the soup in front of me and spoke the honest truth. “I can’t drink anymore. I’m full.”
Meng Po finally accepted the fact that her soup had no effect on me. She looked like she was having a breakdown. “How can this be…”
I tried to comfort her. “Don’t be sad. The flavor is actually quite decent; it’s just a bit salty.”
Meng Po glared at me. I tried to explain, “Is it possible… I’m just saying maybe, okay? Could I be allergic to your soup?”
As soon as I said that, I fainted. The surrounding ghosts rushed forward to watch the commotion, shouting excitedly, “Meng Po’s soup killed someone! Meng Po’s soup killed someone!”
However, they forgot one thing: I was already dead. How could I die a second time?
Meng Po Soup didn’t work on me.
Meng Po’s career was facing a crisis. She sat me down and calmly negotiated with me, asking me not to tell her boss, Yanluo Wang.
I readily agreed. In exchange, Meng Po kept my secret from Yanluo Wang and allowed me to proceed with reincarnation.
And so, carrying the memories of my past life, I cheerfully leaped into the Lake of Rebirth.
In my past life, I was a female general. I was twenty-four when I died in battle. For an ordinary family, a woman that age would already have children old enough to work the fields.
But me? I was a virgin ghost who had never even touched a man!
I felt a bit of regret, so I decided to let loose in this life. I picked a bandit’s den and dove right in.
“Chief! The Madam has given birth!”
“Congratulations, Chief! It’s a young miss with skin as fair as lilies and lips as red as cherries!”
Yep, that’s me.
I looked at the burly man in front of me who was weeping uncontrollably, feeling a bit out of place.
This was my father in this life.
He held me, sobbing so hard he was practically twitching. I didn’t know how to react, so I just bared my gums and gave him a big smile.
The man cried even harder, blubbering, “My girl knows how to smile the moment she’s born!”
Because of that, I was given the exact same name as my previous life: Huanyan. Qin Huanyan.
