Chapter 145

The Nation possessed more than just the Apocalypse Special Affairs Department and various Research Institutes; it also had a group of individuals with extraordinary intelligence dedicated to analyzing situations and uncovering the truth.

The former Special Affairs Bureau had already been merged into the various Research Institutes.

From the moment the incident in Shi City began, necessitating a large deployment of experts from the Apocalypse Special Affairs Department, they had to be on guard against a diversionary tactic. Aberrants were elusive and unpredictable; anyone could suddenly turn into one. This was especially true after Li Huai’s case, which almost confirmed that some Aberrant infections occurred without any abnormal reactions at all!

While those around them remained oblivious, the person next to them might have already had their soul replaced.

Under such circumstances, there were bound to be many Aberrants hidden among humanity.

Once it was confirmed that Aberrants could communicate with each other, it became certain that many were hiding within the Core Shelter. After all, hiding there offered the highest value.

Therefore, if the Aberrants wanted to lure the tigers away from the mountain, the humans could draw the snakes out of their holes. By executing a fishing operation, they could root out the hidden Aberrants.

Wasn’t the moment Qi Lingwu left the Shelter and Sheng An took away many experts the perfect time for the Aberrants to act?

Aside from those that had rioted, there were still many deeply embedded Aberrants.

They had already rooted out thirteen of them.

Qiu Yu lowered her eyes to look at Zhao Zhicheng on the ground. He was the second Aberrant to appear in Team 0…

She had also come from Team 0, so it was impossible for her to have no feelings for the unit. Zhao Zhicheng was a warrior with the Silence ability; he was highly capable and incredibly reliable.

They had fought side-by-side countless times, trusting each other with their backs. She never expected that one day he would become an Aberrant and strike at the very hope of the Nation.

These monsters that usurped the bodies of others were truly loathsome to the extreme.

This wasn’t Zhao Zhicheng. This thing had killed Zhao Zhicheng, and she had just avenged him.

Jiang Yu emerged from her Space Ability.

She spoke tentatively, “Is it over? What’s the situ-”

Qiu Yu barked coldly, “What are you doing out here?! Get back in! Until the crisis is over, stay in your Space Ability!”

Jiang Yu: “…”

This woman was so fierce.

She silently retreated back into her space, leaving only two muddy footprints on the ground.

*My god, Team Leader Qiu is way too scary. Sister Sheng is much better.*

*Sister Sheng, please come back soon!*

Only after seeing Jiang Yu go back did Qiu Yu turn to leave.

Li Xin asked in surprise, “Aren’t you going to keep pretending to be Jiang Yu?”

Qiu Yu didn’t stop, only leaving behind a cold remark: “Once an Aberrant assassination attempt fails, no more will come. I’m going to other areas to clear out Aberrants. You two guard this place.”

Even if new Aberrants arrived, Gu Qiansheng and Li Xin could handle them.

With that, she vanished from sight.

Li Xin curled his lip.

Gu Qiansheng watched her retreating figure and sighed. “Whether it’s Team Leader Qiu, Sister Sheng, or Qi Dui, these people trained by the Nation always put the big picture first and are willing to take risks… Sister Sheng is even bolder than Team Leader Qiu. I wonder how things are on her end?”

The expression on Li Xin’s face also turned to one of worry.

It was true; Sheng An was even more prone to taking risks than Qiu Yu. The situation in Shi City was already far more severe. He wondered how she was doing now.

At dawn, they received two pieces of news-

Sheng An and Qi Dui had returned, heavily injured.

The mission was a success. Over two hundred Aberrants had been eliminated, including a high-level Rebound Aberrant, an Illusion Aberrant, and a Psychic Aberrant.

The stinging sun shone on the ground as the people who had labored through the night returned underground.

The night’s purge was over.

They could finally sleep with a peace of mind they had never felt before.

This was because the powerful Aberrants and the deeply hidden ones had all been cleared out. Even if a few stray ones remained, they couldn’t cause much trouble in the face of the state machinery.

Jing City was safer than ever before.

In the first large-scale conflict between humans and Aberrants since the Apocalypse, humanity had secured a total victory.

Gu Qiansheng, Li Xin, and even Jiang Yu rushed to the hospital together upon receiving the news.
*

“Is Sister Sheng still not awake?” Wu Buyu asked as he arrived outside the hospital room, his wounds already treated.

Hao Jingye was buried in various documents, his eyes darting across a tablet screen that constantly switched between different displays. He shook his head at the question.

Li Wanyun sighed. “They were all fatal injuries. If the medical team hadn’t been right there on the plane, I don’t even want to think about what might have happened.”

Long Tianyu added, “If only we had a Healing Type Superpower User in the team.”

Song Linwei asked hurriedly, “Do any of you remember who the healers were in your Previous Life?”

Long Tianyu shook his head. “At least not in Jing City or the surrounding areas. Back then, we just had to endure injuries on our own. Superpower Users have great physical constitutions and can survive most wounds, but if it’s a truly fatal injury, even a Healing Type might not be able to help.”

Li Wanyun added, “Wood-type Superpower Users have some healing properties. They can boost a person’s vitality and save lives in critical moments.”

Jiang Yu’s eyes lit up, and she stood up abruptly. “Then I’ll go save Sister Sheng and Qi Dui!”

Li Xin pulled her back down into her seat, his face full of disdain. “Forget it. Don’t go in there and cause trouble. Your ‘healing effect’ isn’t even as good as a few shots of specialized medicine.”

Jiang Yu: “…”

The words stung, but they were undeniably true.

The minor boost a Wood-type Superpower User could provide certainly couldn’t compare to the expertise of the national medical team.

Gu Qiansheng looked at Hao Jingye and asked curiously, “What are you looking at? Any new developments?”

Hao Jingye didn’t look up. “This was a large-scale coordinated action by the Aberrants. We handled it well, so Jing City should have a relatively long period of safety. However, there are too many mysteries hidden behind such a massive operation. The Research Institute is currently gathering information for analysis.”

Song Linwei nodded. “Yeah. Just the fact that Aberrants can communicate, be organized under a unified plan, and execute different tasks is enough to make one’s skin crawl.”

Jiang Yu rubbed her arms, feeling a chill. “Why did the Aberrants attack me?”

Hao Jingye looked up. “That is a crucial point.”

He pushed up his glasses. “We underestimated the Aberrants before. In your Previous Life, the Nation’s order had collapsed, so you lacked both powerful forces and a vast amount of information. Your understanding of the Aberrants was too one-sided.”

Everyone turned to look at him.

Hao Jingye continued, “The Aberrants’ actions at the Core Shelter were likely for the Fragments. That’s understandable-Fragments can empower both Superpower Users and Aberrants, so they want to seize them.

“But the targeted assassination of Jiang Yu and the professional researchers was clearly an attempt to sever humanity’s roots. Aberrants don’t just kill to gain power from blood; they are organized and planned in their desire to destroy humanity.”

Every word he spoke was bone-chilling.

Liu Yue bared his teeth. “Fortunately, they failed.”

His injuries were also quite severe, and he was currently wrapped up like a mummy, yet he insisted on sitting there with them, waiting for Sheng An and Qi Dui to wake up.

“No,” Song Linwei shook his head. “They almost succeeded.”

The group froze for a moment before the realization hit them.

It was true.

If their deductions were correct, that Rebound Aberrant could have wiped them all out… and that would have truly meant destroying half of humanity’s hope.

Sheng An and Qi Lingwu had prevented that by putting their lives on the line.

Recalling the image of Sheng An desperately trying to kill the Rebound Aberrant at any cost, Long Tianyu sighed softly. “So, how exactly did Sheng An know for sure that the Rebound Aberrant could wipe us all out?”

Hao Jingye replied, “The Research Institute’s analysis suggests it might be related to her Supernatural Ability.”

Everyone was stunned.

Hao Jingye added, “The Research Institute is also waiting for her to wake up. They need information from her to analyze the situation further.”

Li Wanyun looked toward the medical room with concern. “Let’s wait, then. Wait for Sister Sheng to wake up.”

They waited until the next morning before Qi Lingwu finally regained consciousness. By the time Sheng An woke up, it was already evening.
