Chapter 154

Liu Zhao’s face flushed with rage. He stood up abruptly. “No, I have to go find them. No matter what, we can’t just ignore the lives of the people in the Shelter!”

He strode out quickly.

Tian Mingcheng hurried to keep up.

However, Tian Mingcheng knew it was futile. Tang Tao was a Space Ability user who had gathered a group of Superpower Users around him. They followed the doctrine of survival of the fittest; they didn’t care whether ordinary people lived or died.

Liu Zhao wasn’t the original administrator of B11. The original person in charge of the Shelter had been killed after taking a hard line and clashing with Tang Tao.

The Shelter had been stocked with a massive amount of grain. Even if a portion had been destroyed during the Apocalypse, it would have been enough to feed everyone for a while. Instead, Tang Tao had seized it all.

They hoarded the food, forcing all the Superpower Users who were unwilling to join them to seek refuge with their friends and family elsewhere-or submit.

The more Superpower Users joined them, the stronger their faction became, and the fewer voices there were to oppose them.

When Liu Zhao arrived, Captain Tan of the garrison was in a standoff with Tang Tao.

Captain Tan was furious. “Tang Tao, are you even human? You stole the grain, and the Shelter has already run out of food. Now you want to take the Superpower Users and the able-bodied men too? What happens to the people left behind?!”

Aberrants could strike at any moment. The Shelter was already lacking defensive strength. If they took away the Superpower Users and the strong, wouldn’t the majority of the remaining people become lambs to the slaughter? Would they just be left for the Aberrants to massacre?

If humanity couldn’t unite at a time like this, they were only accelerating their own extinction!

Standing opposite him were over a hundred people, mostly Superpower Users and physically fit individuals.

Tang Tao stood at the very front. He didn’t look like a villain; on the contrary, he was pale, thin, and had delicate features. However, the gloom in his eyes made people extremely uncomfortable.

Hearing the captain’s words, Tang Tao smiled. “The people left behind shouldn’t be alive anyway. In this world, if you have no ability to survive, isn’t living just a waste of food?”

He stared at Captain Tan with a meaningful smile:

“I think highly of you, Captain Tan. Even though you don’t have a Supernatural Ability, your marksmanship is excellent and your combat strength is high. If you could lead your team to join us, I can’t guarantee much else, but having three full meals a day won’t be a problem at all.”

Captain Tan clenched his fists.

He was originally part of the garrison at a Level 1 Shelter. On the day of the Apocalypse, several surrounding Shelters were severely hit. He had led his soldiers everywhere to perform rescue operations and arranged for the migration of other Shelters to B11…

They had been busy saving lives and protecting the citizens of the Shelter, never imagining that once the most critical period had passed, they would be backstabbed by the very people they protected.

The losses from the Apocalypse were already heavy. After Tang Tao awakened his power, he took advantage of the garrison being away on support missions to recruit several Superpower Users. They had sneaked into the base and seized all their reserve weapons.

Furthermore, one of the Superpower Users among them was very special; they could release a Poison Mist that could incapacitate a large group of people in an instant.

After that, they targeted the grain supplies while simultaneously seizing the Level 1 Shelter.

Captain Tan had no choice but to bring the remaining survivors to B11. Now, that Level 1 Shelter had become the “camp” for Tang Tao’s team.

Captain Tan roared, “The grain you’re eating was stolen from the Nation!”

In the crowd, many people glared at Tang Tao with fury, wishing they could kill him on the spot.

Tang Tao replied matter-of-factly, “The capable shall have it.”

He held up a megaphone and shouted, “Superpower Users, you all know what it’s like out there now, right? During famines in the past, you could still eat tree roots. Now, there aren’t even tree roots left for you out there!

“Food has become a non-renewable resource. It is such a scarce commodity-do you really want to share it with this group of ordinary people? For the same amount of grain, every extra person sharing it with you means one less portion for yourself.

“So, join us! Do not associate with those who are meant to be weeded out by this world!”
“Tang Tao!” Captain Tan’s face flushed with rage. He scanned the crowd, raising his voice. “The Nation has stated that our grain reserves can support everyone for over a decade! And in those ten years, scientists will develop new food sources!

“When facing a crisis, we should work together to find a solution, not kill each other! We haven’t reached that point yet!”

There was enough grain stockpiled; it wasn’t time to start fighting over resources.

Tang Tao’s theory was completely flawed, but in times like these, fragile people were easily seduced by the wrong ideas.

Tang Tao shot back immediately, “Shouldn’t we prepare in advance? The Nation? Where is the Nation? It’s been so long-have you even been in contact with them?”

“That batch of grain you intercepted-wasn’t that from the Nation?!” Captain Tan retorted.

He desperately wanted to gun Tang Tao down.

However, the man was cautious. His Space Ability included a protective shield that kept him absolutely safe. They had tried to capture him several times before, but every attempt had failed.

And whenever an attempt failed, the man would use it as an excuse to go on a killing spree.

Tang Tao’s expression shifted slightly.

Then, he curled his lips into a smirk. “They just happened to transport some grain here. Get this through your head: this is the Apocalypse. It’s a global disaster. You keep talking about the ‘Nation,’ but the old ways from before the Apocalypse are gone!”

“You-”

Tang Tao raised his voice again. “Everyone! This time, we don’t just want Superpower Users. We also want ordinary people with strong physical constitutions because… we have a way to create Superpower Users.”

As the words landed, the surrounding crowd erupted into a clamor.

Tang Tao smirked. “I have something in my possession that can not only provide Enhancement for Superpower Users but also give ordinary people the chance to awaken a Supernatural Ability. So, join us! Join us, and you will no longer be an ordinary person. You will be a powered individual fit to live in the Apocalypse!”

Around them, the uproar grew even louder.

Liu Zhao had just approached when he heard this. His heart sank. Seeing many people starting to waver, he immediately shouted, “Don’t believe him, everyone!”

Captain Tan’s eyes lit up when he saw him.

Liu Zhao hurried over, wiping the sweat from his forehead. He yelled, “Even if there’s a chance of becoming a Superpower User, there must be risks involved! Don’t believe his lies. What if you lose your lives? Just wait a little longer for the Nation’s arrangements.”

Tang Tao gave a mocking laugh, repeating the same line: “The Nation? Where is the Nation?”

He didn’t bother arguing further, simply continuing, “Anyone who wants to join, sign up now. As long as you join us, you’ll get three square meals a day, and you might even become a Superpower User.”

Other promises might not have been enough to move them.

But the prospect of becoming a Superpower User was truly too tempting.

In the Apocalypse-especially in the cut-off zone of B11-everyone felt a sense of constant peril under the threat of Tang Tao and his group. They all wanted to become Superpower Users to gain the ability to protect themselves and their families.

Someone asked, “Can we bring our families?”

One of the men in Tang Tao’s team replied instantly, “Superpower Users can. Ordinary people can’t.”

Immediately, the ordinary people hesitated.

Tang Tao was quick to add, “You can join first, then come back for your families once you’ve awakened your Supernatural Ability. Our ‘Apocalypse Future City’ doesn’t support useless slackers. So, what’ll it be? Will you stay here and starve to death while you wait, or join us and take a gamble for yourselves and your families?”

As he finished speaking, someone stepped out from the crowd. Soon, more and more people followed, forming a line.

“Tang Tao!” Captain Tan looked ready to fight him to the death.

Liu Zhao roared, “Aberrants could appear at any moment! There are even Aberrants hiding among us! If you all leave, what will happen to your families if they’re killed by Aberrants?!”

The people in line paused, and some began to waver again.

Tang Tao said leisurely, “If you don’t go and wait a few more days, you’ll all just starve to death anyway…”
