Chapter 202

Song Linwei also stopped in his tracks.

In that instant, his mind estimated the speed at which the lava was spreading and calculated how fast they could run…

Too late. There was no time at all!

The location of the Four Small Mountains was strange to begin with. The four small hills formed an enclosure, surrounding a flat stretch of land in the middle. Under normal circumstances, that had no effect, but when lava erupted from all four sides at once, it became a cage!

“Fuck!” Zhang Kun cursed. “What the hell is this place?!”

Song Linwei’s expression was grim. “We’ve been tricked. This is a trap.”

How could there be such a coincidence?

A Mutant Plant appeared here. After they rushed over, the Four Small Mountains’ Volcano erupted, leaving them with nowhere to run?

If this wasn’t a trap, what was?

Most likely…

Even that Mutant Plant had been part of the trap.

Qi Dui and the other top Superpower Users had left. Wu Buyu and Long Tianyu, the two best at escaping with their Supernatural Ability, had gone with them, leaving the defense force here weakened.

Liu Yue, Ke Jiaxue, Yu Feng, Jiang Huanshu, and the others had all been sent out elsewhere.

Even Li Xin, who could temporarily create metal with a melting point higher than lava, had gone with them too!

For a Mutant Plant to appear at a time like this was, in itself, Bait!

There had to be a deeply hidden enemy in the Southwest, scheming against them with meticulous care.

That enemy had used their obsession with Mutant Plants, and their willingness to pay any price, to lure them into this trap and turn them into cornered beasts with no way out.

Zhang Kun was in disbelief. “Could someone actually control a Volcano eruption?”

What kind of enemy could do something like this?

How was that possible?!

Thoughts churned wildly in both their minds. In the next moment, Ji Yani charged down the mountain with Sheng An and Jiang Yu.

They had already noticed the other three erupting Volcanoes…

Jiang Yu cursed as well.

No matter what kind of crisis it was, they could fight it-but this was a Volcano eruption!

The heat was scorching. Ji Yani was drenched in sweat, yet she felt a chill wrap around her heart. She clenched her teeth, glanced at Zhang Kun and Song Linwei below the mountain, and listened to the movements of the three people behind her. In that brief instant as she ran, her heart was torn in two by two conflicting thoughts.

If she gave it everything she had and burned through her Supernatural Ability, she might be able to take Sister Sheng and Jiang Yu out before the lava fully surrounded them.

But what about the others?

Was she supposed to abandon them?

If she didn’t rush out, they could only rely on Jiang Yu’s Space Ability. But her Space Ability could only hold them for twenty-four hours, and Academician Zhou and the others, who were already inside, would have to come out even sooner.

If this place had already been swallowed by lava by then, wouldn’t they die the moment they came out?

Staying meant there was only a one percent chance of survival.

But if she went all out, she could at least save Sister Sheng and Jiang Yu…

In that instant, Ji Yani felt as if she had been split in two.

“Ah-”

Behind her, Liu Miao and Cheng Bairuo screamed at the same time.

Liu Miao was also a Speed-type Superpower User. She wasn’t as fast as Ji Yani, but she could still run ahead of the lava. However, the splashing lava sprayed everywhere, and several droplets struck them.

Gu Qiansheng gritted his teeth and made no sound, but Liu Miao and Cheng Bairuo were in so much pain they nearly broke down.

Especially Liu Miao. By sheer bad luck, a drop of splattered lava landed on her head. With a sizzling sound, she screamed and rolled straight to the ground. Cheng Bairuo and Gu Qiansheng fell with her.

Behind them, lava surged closer.

Under the scorching heat, their skin hurt as if it were splitting open inch by inch.

The Helicopter in the sky had been trying to land and pick them up, but the eruptions on all four sides had been too sudden. Just as the aircraft plunged downward, splattered lava came hurtling toward it.

The pilot had no choice but to dodge at once.

The Helicopter had neither the time nor the opportunity to descend and save them!

Ji Yani struggled even harder.

Song Linwei shouted, “Ji Yani, get Sister Sheng and Jiang Yu out of here!”

-He had made his choice.

-Compared to them, the importance of Sheng An and Jiang Yu was self-evident. At a critical moment, the ones who should be protected most were humanity’s hope.

Zhang Kun squeezed out a single word: “Go!”
Ji Yani gritted her teeth and sped up.

Behind her, Gu Qiansheng did not ask Ji Yani to save them. He did not even chase after her. Instead, after he fell, he closed his eyes and lay where he was.

This was his stance.

Sister Sheng and Jiang Yu had to survive…

The lava surged toward him. At last, the scorching heat split his skin open, and blood seeped out. The blistering ground was hot enough to nearly cook a person alive.

A few droplets of lava splashed onto him with a crackling hiss, instantly charring a large patch of flesh. If he were not a Superpower User, he would already be dead.

But at this moment, living hurt worse than dying. His body was in so much pain.

For a second, Gu Qiansheng even thought, Why not end it myself?

The lava should be fast enough. By the time he raised his hand and wiped away the Time on his neck, the lava would probably have swallowed his body already.

Gu Qiansheng almost wanted to laugh.

He was about to die, and he still had the mind to think about all this.

Ever since he was little, he had loved reading historical stories. He had dreamed of becoming a ruthless hero of his age, but he had been born in the modern era. Aside from the Third Hospital-the psychiatric hospital-there was nowhere for him to play the overlord.

Gu Qiansheng had no interest in going to prison and sewing for the rest of his life.

Later, after awakening his Supernatural Ability and guessing that the Apocalypse was coming, he thought his chance had finally arrived. He had never expected that-

Your dad would always be your dad.

And Sister Sheng would always be your sister.

Apocalypse or no Apocalypse, if he wanted to become some ruthless overlord, he would still end up sewing in prison.

Oh, wait. In the Apocalypse, he would not even get the chance to sew in prison. Who knew what Sister Sheng would make him do instead?

Did he have regrets?

It seemed he did not. Thinking back on everything that had happened over these past few months, Gu Qiansheng felt strangely content. He had done quite a few meaningful things.

The Apocalypse Special Affairs Department was, by its very nature, a place that fought on the front lines. It held the highest authority and offered the best treatment, but it was also where sacrifice came most easily.

The Nation had long since engraved their names at the very front of the Apocalypse Special Affairs Department’s records. Even if they died, as long as humanity still existed, someone would remember them forever.

A ruthless hero?

No. Perhaps the word should be hero.

That was not bad either.

The corner of Gu Qiansheng’s mouth lifted slightly.

It was also at that instant that Sheng An’s voice rang out, clear and sharp.

“Stop. Jiang Yu!”

Four words. Two commands.

No matter when, where, or under what circumstances, her voice was always calm. Even beneath death’s descending blade, it remained steady. She was the anchor for all of them.

Ji Yani stopped abruptly. The heart that had been hanging in her chest dropped all at once, and instead, a hopeless sort of certainty settled over her. Her expression relaxed.

Sheng An had made her choice.

They would not abandon their teammates and flee.

And as long as Ji Yani stopped for even an instant-even if it was only the instant Jiang Yu needed to take them into her Space Ability-their first method of escape had already failed.

Jiang Yu clenched her teeth. Three vines shot out from her hands at once, wrapping around Gu Qiansheng and the other two. Just as the lava was about to swallow them, she yanked hard and dragged them brutally to her side.

Then all eight of them vanished.

They would take the gamble. Gamble on whether they could think of a solution within twenty-four hours.

At the moment they disappeared, Song Linwei’s disapproving voice could still be heard. “Sister Sheng, you should have considered the bigger picture. You should have let Yani take you and Jiang Yu out!”

Yet Jiang Yu felt inexplicably light.

She thought that compared with surviving while her teammates sacrificed themselves, she would rather fight shoulder to shoulder with them. The wish she had made back then, when she was one of the “farmers,” had always remained.

Because they were teammates.

Jiang Yu pulled them into her Space Ability. Next, barring any accidents, they should have twenty-four hours to think.

However-

The eight of them had only just appeared inside Jiang Yu’s Space Ability. They had not even had time to make out what it looked like. Their vision merely flickered, and they were back where they had started.

Jiang Yu’s pupils contracted, her face full of terror.

“What’s going on?!” She brought them in again, but in the same single instant, they reappeared in the original spot.

The place where their feet landed was exactly the same as before, as if they had never left at all.

Jiang Yu’s mind went blank.

Sheng An’s gaze sharpened.
