Chapter 90

Is there really only one Aberrant right now?

“Shit!” Li Xin rubbed his arms, unable to stop himself from commenting. “Sister Sheng, don’t scare us like that. That sounds absolutely bone-chilling.”

Song Linwei also felt a chill run down his spine.

However, out of habit, he shot Li Xin a glare. “No swearing.”

Li Xin: “…”

Sheng An shook her head. “It’s just a thought. Either way, stay sharp. Let’s head to South Lake Park first.”

The car accelerated.

Long Tianyu and Wu Buyu took every second they could to rest and recover their Supernatural Ability.

Sheng An, meanwhile, discussed their upcoming tactics with Qi Lingwu and the others.

*

South Lake Park.

At the crack of dawn, there was almost no one outside.

Sheng An and her team had pursued their target with such haste that when they arrived at South Lake Park, the elderly early-morning exercisers had not yet entered the grounds.

Wu Buyu carried Sheng An, Li Wanyun, and Li Xin into the park.

The birdman landed, retracting his massive wings.

As Wu Buyu shifted back into human form, Sheng An and the other two stepped onto the ground.

Ruan Zifeng’s voice crackled through their earpieces: “The target is to your southwest. Be careful; he’s watching you.”

Sheng An straightened her clothes.

Staring toward the southwest, she spoke calmly, “Come out and talk. I know you’re conscious. At the very least, you have your own thoughts, don’t you?”

A rustling sound followed, and a man appeared fifteen meters away.

It was a calculated distance.

It was far enough to make a direct charge difficult, yet close enough to Sheng An and her team that any lethal weapon powerful enough to completely shatter an Immortal Body would inevitably catch them in the crossfire.

An Aberrant with intelligence was truly a terrifying enemy.

Sheng An’s pupils contracted as she focused on his hands.

Wu Buyu and Li Wanyun were equally shocked.

He wasn’t alone!

He was holding a woman who had passed out. She reeked of alcohol, wore revealing clothes, and her hair was a tangled mess. Clearly, she had been wandering the streets late at night when “Zhang Jialiang” snatched her.

He was using her as a hostage.

“Let me leave Jing City, and I promise I’ll never show my face to you again,” the Aberrant spoke.

It was still Zhang Jialiang’s voice, and he still possessed the appearance of a youthful teenager.

But his hand was clamped tightly around the hostage’s throat.

His fingertips sank into her skin; it looked as though a single squeeze would end her life.

Sheng An’s expression remained unchanged as she asked slowly, “How exactly should we let you leave?”

“Let me take a few hostages and leave Jing City for a remote area. Once I’m there, I’ll release them immediately. How about it?” His voice was raspy, filled with anticipation.

Sheng An was in no rush to answer. She continued her questioning. “Why do you want to leave?”

When someone turned into an Aberrant, even if they learned to hide, their primary instinct was usually slaughter-not flight.

“Zhang Jialiang’s” face darkened, his eyes turning cold.

“In my memory, you and that group around you aren’t simple people. You can’t kill me, and I’ll have a hard time killing you. Let’s not waste our time. Let me leave Jing City, and I’ll stay out of your sight forever. What do you say?”

Suddenly, he put on a pitiful front, adopting Zhang Jialiang’s old expressions.

“Sister Sheng, please? Just let me go. I promise, I won’t kill anyone ever again!”

Sheng An looked at him.

As she watched him, it was as if she could see Zhang Jialiang’s enthusiastic face and remember how endearing he used to be.

However-

She also saw the images of those corpses that couldn’t be pieced back together.

They were the people Zhang Jialiang had loved and wanted to protect most.

Sheng An asked him, “You really won’t kill anyone else?”

He nodded vigorously.

Sheng An struck a thoughtful pose, rubbing her chin. “You have an Immortal Body, and we can’t kill you. It really is a difficult situation. If we can settle this peacefully, that would be for the best.”

“Zhang Jialiang’s” eyes lit up as he stared intently at her.

Sheng An added, “But…”

“But what?” He took a step forward, sounding urgent. “What do you need to-”

His voice cut off abruptly.

In that split second, Long Tianyu appeared beside him, swinging a broad blade toward his neck!

Ji Yani moved like a gust of wind, rushing forward with Li Wanyun.

A Spatial Blade was unleashed simultaneously.

However-

*Thud!*

The Aberrant tossed the woman aside and seized Long Tianyu’s hand. He violently jerked the man toward him and clamped a hand around his throat, his fingertips digging deep, squeezing the very breath out of Long Tianyu.

As for Long Tianyu’s “fatal blow,” the prepared Aberrant had dodged just enough.

The blade only cut halfway through.

By then, the wound had already healed.

Ji Yani and Li Wanyun skidded to a halt. Li Wanyun’s Spatial Blade had sliced through half of his body.

Yet, in an instant, the flesh had knit back together.

He had been on guard the entire time!
This was too difficult!

Li Wanyun’s expression was grim.

Even worse off was Long Tianyu, who was at death’s door.

“Zhang Jialiang” burst into laughter. “Hahahaha! Did you think I wouldn’t come prepared? I was the one who filmed this guy-how could I not understand his abilities? What, you wanted him to take advantage of me being distracted and sneak-attack me?”

As if something had struck him, he grew even more agitated. “Back then I was ecstatic-so excited I could barely contain it. I wanted to awaken a Supernatural Ability and join you people. I was happy for days on end, burning incense every single day, praying to God for a powerful Supernatural Ability.

“And I got it. Just look at me now-aren’t I strong?”

Sheng An’s face went cold in an instant.

She locked eyes with him and enunciated each word. “Don’t use the word ‘I.’ You’re not Zhang Jialiang. He’s already dead.”

Zhang Jialiang was dead-killed by the thing in front of her.

The Aberrants froze.

Then he kept laughing.

“Hahaha! Right. The weakling Zhang Jialiang is dead. Now it’s me. That guy never deserved to live anyway. Stupid humans actually get happy over meaningless things-what a laughable emotion. Happiness only matters when you see blood…”

His fingers tightened, and blood sprayed from Long Tianyu.

Long Tianyu struggled twice, but with his throat-his vital point-being strangled, he couldn’t use Flash.

At the sight of blood, the Aberrants became even more excited.

He looked like he’d been shot full of stimulants. If he wasn’t forcing himself to hold back, he would’ve already killed Long Tianyu!

Sheng An stared at Long Tianyu’s neck, drew a deep breath, and spoke hoarsely. “You never meant to negotiate with me. You were waiting for him to make a move-so you could take a hostage?”

He had known from the start that Long Tianyu would try to ambush him!

He’d been waiting for the instant Long Tianyu struck, then, while Long Tianyu’s focus was fully locked in, he turned it around and seized him instead.

An intelligent Aberrants-terrifying.

“Smart.” The Aberrants kept one foot pressed on the unconscious woman’s throat while holding Long Tianyu in one hand, looking pleased with himself. “I’m leaving. And sooner or later, I’m coming for your life.”

With that, he moved to take Long Tianyu and the woman with him.

Sheng An suddenly said, “Trade with me.”

The Aberrants turned back, confusion flashing in his eyes.

Sheng An walked forward unhurriedly, her voice steady. “Take me instead of them. Compared to one disobedient Superpower User and one ordinary passerby, what do you think of me as a hostage?”

The Aberrants paused.

Sheng An continued, “You’re scared too, aren’t you? There’s a chance the people up top will decide some losses are acceptable and use weapons of mass destruction on you. Compared to them, the state values me more-doesn’t it?”

She drew even closer.

The Aberrants seemed to be thinking it over. He knew Long Tianyu was rebellious and hard to control, and he also knew Sheng An’s rank was very high.

After a moment, he nodded. “You’re truly kind. You humans and your emotions… hard to understand.”

He stood where he was, waiting for Sheng An to come within reach.

But even now, he was on high alert, his Supernatural Ability kept active at all times.

Sheng An walked right up to him. Once she was close, she lifted her chin slightly. “Let him go first.”

The Aberrants stared at Sheng An.

He gauged the situation, eyes narrowing. Then he suddenly flung Long Tianyu away with brutal force, smashing him toward the ground.

At the same time, he reached for Sheng An.

Wu Buyu had been ready-his wings snapped open as he shot upward, catching Long Tianyu.

Li Wanyun sent a Spatial Blade slashing at the Aberrants.

The Aberrants ignored it completely, his hand going straight for Sheng An’s throat.

Wu Buyu passed Long Tianyu to Ji Yani, speaking fast. “Get him treated-now!”

Ji Yani nodded and sprinted off.

The Spatial Blade cleaved into the Aberrants, and the wound healed in an instant.

His grasping hand was blocked hard by Sheng An. Her other hand drew her gun, and she fired at the center of his forehead.

Bang! Bang!

Several shots in quick succession-bullets punched into his brow, only for the flesh to regenerate instantly and spit the bullets back out.

“Zhang Jialiang” jerked, his movements slowing for a fraction of a second.

The next moment, he lunged at Sheng An in fury. “You think you can kill me? Keep dreaming!”

Sheng An raised her arm to parry and kicked up.

Thud-

They crashed into a fight.

Sheng An was incredibly strong and fast enough that, for the moment, he couldn’t immediately take her down.

The Aberrants sneered. “How long do you think you can hold out? Ordinary humans are nothing but blood bags meant to feed us. Your attacks are useless against me, but my attacks will only make your injuries worse. So tell me-how long can you last?”

He threw his weight into it and kicked Sheng An away.

By now Sheng An’s body was riddled with cuts, and her blood had smeared onto the Aberrants’ hand.

He raised it to his nose and inhaled. Then his head snapped up, and his eyes grew even more crazed.

His voice turned hoarse. “The stronger the person, the sweeter the blood. This scent… I’ve never smelled anything this rich. Your blood-I have to-“
