Chapter 96

Fever?

That was certainly a sensitive word.

Especially for Superpower Users, who almost instinctively associated the word with Supernatural Abilities.

Could Sister Sheng be awakening a Supernatural Ability?

Jiang Yu’s heart skipped a beat.

As if knowing what they were thinking, Sheng An’s expression remained calm. “I’ve been running a fever since I was injured. It’s most likely due to the wound.”

Upon hearing this, everyone felt a bit disappointed.

If the fever had started when she was injured, then she had been burning up for over eight hours.

For Superpower Users who awakened after the Apocalypse began, the longer the fever lasted, the more powerful the resulting ability tended to be.

However, data on current Superpower Users showed that things were completely different before the Apocalypse.

Almost all of the current early-awakened Superpower Users had only experienced a high fever for a short while before awakening; there were no cases of prolonged fevers.

Therefore, Sheng An’s long-lasting fever was, in all probability, just a result of her injuries.

Li Wanyun frowned, her eyes filled with disapproval.

“You should be resting. Your injuries are very serious.” If she was running a fever, how could they not be?

Hao Jingye nodded in agreement. “I concur. The doctor did not recommend that you be discharged.”

Compared to Superpower Users, Sheng An’s physical recovery was much slower. Long Tianyu would be up and jumping around in no time, but Sheng An needed proper recuperation.

Sheng An shook her head. “I’ve already taken medicine. I’m fine. Time waits for no one, and we’re announcing the news of the Apocalypse the day after tomorrow. Let’s focus on business first.”

She turned to Hao Jingye. “Is there any other news?”

They could pause the recruitment of Superpower Users for the next two days.

Once the news was announced the day after tomorrow, those “Deviants” would come out of the woodwork on their own.

Though his eyes still showed disapproval, Hao Jingye obediently switched into work mode.

“After the matter regarding the Aberrants was reported, the higher-ups took it very seriously. It should be a major point of discussion during tomorrow’s general meeting.”

“The Former Special Affairs Bureau has collected a lot of information. Today, they spoke with Li Wanyun, Long Tianyu, and Jiang Yu. They also sought out Yang Chuan and Wu Zhi from Group A. All the data from the Research Institute is being synced to them in real-time, so we should have an analysis report soon.”

Just as he finished speaking, his communicator vibrated.

Immediately, a file notification popped up on his tablet.

Hao Jingye’s eyes lit up. “We were just talking about them, and the message arrived.”

It wasn’t exactly a coincidence.

After all, when the information was sent over, Sister Sheng had said she wanted feedback today. Since it was already dinner time, it was only natural for the results to be ready.

He opened the file and quickly scanned through dozens of pages of text and images.

Then, he closed his eyes slightly, his lips moving as if whispering, though no sound came out.

Liu Yue asked, “What is he doing?”

Sheng An replied, “Organizing the information he just received so he can relay it to us.”

Liu Yue looked puzzled. “?”

Wu Buyu and the others were equally bewildered.

Jiang Yu said cryptically, “This kid has a photographic memory. He’s a legendary genius, comparable to a CPU. He can aggregate and analyze massive amounts of information in his head, then translate it into a way we can understand.”

Everyone: “??”

Jiang Yu gave a slight smile. “Did you all think he was just an ordinary assistant? He was sent by the state specifically to assist Sister Sheng.”

“Photographic memory, fluent in over a dozen languages, studied dozens of majors, a total polymath… only someone like that is qualified to be an assistant for the Apocalypse Special Affairs Department.”

Everyone: “???”

Jiang Yu’s face practically screamed: *No way, no way, you guys can’t be this sheltered, right?*

Everyone: “…”

After a brief silence, the people who had been holding their heads high, thinking they were incredibly impressive, lowered them slightly. The atmosphere at the table grew quiet.

Jiang Yu curled her lips in a smug smile.

She couldn’t be the only one to suffer the ego-crushing weight of a literal god-tier student.

They were all teammates, all chosen ones-they should all share in the devastation together!

Sheng An glanced at her but didn’t call her out.

Hao Jingye had finished processing the data. He opened his eyes and resumed his professional, workaholic persona.

He let out a long breath and said slowly, “Sister Sheng, since these are all just inferences, the analysis provided by the Former Special Affairs Bureau is only the first version of their hypotheses. It will be updated as we go.”

Sheng An nodded, signaling for him to continue.

“First, regarding the Aberrants. Based on the analysis of existing information, Aberrants, like early-awakened Superpower Users, have an extremely rare chance of appearing before the Apocalypse. However, once they do appear, they are high-tier powerhouses-the kind of elites that wouldn’t even be seen two years into the Apocalypse,” Hao Jingye said in a matter-of-fact tone.
Stated that way, everyone could understand.

They were living examples of this. No matter who they were, none of them had possessed such powerful abilities before they died in their previous lives. In this life, they had awakened early, and their strength far exceeded what it had been before their deaths.

Long Tianyu felt a rare sense of helplessness. “I thought being reborn and getting stronger was a cheat code given to me by Heaven as the Chosen One. It turns out everyone is the same; it’s just a common phenomenon.”

Sheng An thought for a moment and suddenly said, “If you want to say Heaven provided a cheat code, that’s probably not wrong either.”

Everyone was startled.

Hao Jingye nodded in agreement. “Yes. The analysis from the Former Special Affairs Bureau concluded that while the existence of Reborn Persons and early-awakened Superpower Users is a mystery, based on the result that they have all become stronger, it can be tentatively determined that a certain force is helping humanity.

“Perhaps it is the consciousness of the Earth, perhaps it is Providence, or perhaps it is the Gods of Huaxia… For now, we refer to this entity as ‘He,’ and view it as the Gods of Huaxia helping us.”

Li Xin was puzzled. “Why the Gods of Huaxia?”

Song Linwei gave him a smack on the head.

Gu Qiansheng was speechless. “Because currently, only our Huaxia has Reborn Persons and early-awakened Superpower Users. Of course it’s the Gods of Huaxia.”

Li Xin muttered aggrievedly, “Oh…”

Li Wanyun looked at Hao Jingye and pressed further, “What about the Aberrants?”

Hao Jingye replied, “That brings us to the second analysis. There are early-awakened Superpower Users, but there are also powerful Aberrants appearing ahead of schedule. One might be a coincidence, but two is absolutely impossible. Add to that the fact that there seems to be some kind of connection between Aberrants, as well as Xu Jia, the Aberrant who was hidden among humans in the previous life…”

Hidden!

Everyone’s hearts trembled.

Hao Jingye added, “Xu Jia’s situation has also been analyzed. From her physical examination, she turned into an Aberrant slightly later than Zhang Jialiang. After the Aberrant Zhang Jialiang escaped, he sensed her, so he rushed over to rendezvous with her.

“The analysis suggests that the Aberrants appearing before the Apocalypse are likely not chosen at random. Instead, in the previous lives of Li Wanyun and the others, these two were already Aberrants!”

Li Wanyun and Long Tianyu exchanged a look, sucking in a cold breath.

Long Tianyu said, “Xu Jia was a hidden Aberrant? When I met her in my last life, she was highly sought after and had several companions. She even saved people!”

Song Linwei sneered. “So we can’t rule out that she was very good at pretending. We can’t even rule out the possibility that her entire group were Aberrants.”

“Crap.” Long Tianyu rubbed his arms. “The more we talk, the scarier it gets. If they were all a bunch of Aberrants, what hope did humanity have?”

Sheng An said, “Your previous life was a world destined for extinction, which is why a ‘God’ is helping this world.”

She looked at Long Tianyu and smiled slightly. “Try to remember, who were Xu Jia’s companions in your last life?”

Long Tianyu: “…”

Gu Qiansheng murmured, “The existence of a ‘God’ willing to help humanity might be a good thing. Does it mean that this time, with His help, it’s possible for humanity to survive?”

“Not necessarily.” Sheng An shook her head and looked at Hao Jingye. “Go back to the second analysis.”

Hao Jingye said, “The result of the second analysis is-if there is a ‘God’ helping humanity, there is likely also an existence helping the Aberrants. That is why there are early-awakened Superpower Users, but also powerful Aberrants appearing ahead of time.”

Everyone’s hearts sank.

Hao Jingye stated calmly, “There is evidence in the analysis report to support this. In your memories, the Xu Jia of the previous life also lived until the second year of the Apocalypse. Furthermore, the current her possesses Aberrant strength far exceeding what she should have in the second year.”

Wu Buyu pursed his lips and spoke softly:

“Humanity and Aberrants are like two absolute camps. In the previous lives of Li Wanyun and Long Tianyu, humanity was destined to lose-they had already lost, in fact. So ‘He’ is helping us, hoping that we can win this time.”

Hao Jingye nodded. “Assuming He allowed you to be reborn and awaken early, then there must be another force helping the Aberrants, or rather, interfering with His help to us.”

Sheng An lowered her eyes slightly.

After a long moment, she looked up, her voice calm. “If there is another force interfering…”

She fixed her gaze on Li Wanyun and Long Tianyu, emphasizing every word: “Can you be certain that your memories haven’t been tampered with by someone… or something?”
