Chapter 82 – Blood Exchange Brotherhood 3

At that moment, on the mountain path leading to the manor in the capital’s outskirts, the carriage wheels happened to roll over a mountain rock, loosening the components on the axle.

Tuoba Jihui stepped out of the carriage immediately. As he untied the traces to separate the horses from the carriage, he shouted toward the interior, “Everyone out! The carriage is too difficult to drive through the forest. We’re riding!”

Tuoba Yunxiao quickly dismounted to help.

By then, the shaken Tuoba Xin had recovered slightly.

Just as she was about to step down to assist, the rustling of footsteps echoed from the surrounding bushes, followed closely by the whistling of arrows cutting through the air.

“Royal Brother!” Tuoba Xin unfastened the long whip at her waist, knocking away the arrows flying toward her.

Tuoba Yunxiao and Tuoba Jihui were also caught off guard.

Behind the carriage, the two remaining guards rushed forward to surround the vehicle, drawing their blades to deflect the incoming arrows.

The two Tuoba brothers accelerated their efforts to unhitch the horses.

Fang Qiluo had just stepped off the carriage and was terrified by the scene, her legs frozen as she didn’t know which way to run.

Tuoba Jihui grabbed her, pulled her into his arms, and hoisted her directly onto a horse before vaulting up behind her.

Before Fang Qiluo could react, she heard the sound of an arrowhead piercing flesh, followed by a muffled groan from Tuoba Jihui behind her.

“You… you…” Fang Qiluo was scared out of her wits.

Tuoba Jihui only said, “I’m fine,” then shouted toward Tuoba Xin, “Little Sister, go! Quickly!”

Tuoba Xin wanted to leave, but she had to be able to break free first!

Tuoba Yunxiao looked at the arrow piercing Tuoba Jihui’s arm and yelled at him, “Second Brother, you go first! Little Sister, follow him! We’ll cover you!”

After saying this, Tuoba Yunxiao ordered his last two guards to protect Tuoba Xin and buy her time.

By the time Xiao Wangshu stepped out of the carriage, only the carriage body remained to provide her and Tuoba Yunxiao a bit of cover.

Under the protection of the guards, Tuoba Xin rode off to catch up with Tuoba Jihui.

One of the two guards also fell.

The last surviving guard was covered in wounds and could no longer hold out. He urged Tuoba Yunxiao, “Third Prince, please leave! There are too many assassins. If you don’t go now, it’ll be too late!”

It wasn’t that Tuoba Yunxiao didn’t want to leave; the assassins’ assault was so fierce that he simply couldn’t.

Right then, in the distant bushes, a man in black drew his bow and pulled the string taut.

The released arrow streaked toward Tuoba Yunxiao’s back. Before Tuoba Yunxiao could react, Xiao Wangshu lunged toward him.

Squelch-

Tuoba Yunxiao turned around. A few drops of blood splashed onto his face, still warm.

The arrow had pierced Xiao Wangshu’s right shoulder, and blood quickly stained her green robe red.

Seeing this, Tuoba Yunxiao’s pupils constricted, and he even forgot to react.

In the bushes, the man in black saw this and did not intend to continue the attack, preparing to retreat instead.

Just as he was about to pull back, another arrow whistled through the air and embedded itself in his right shoulder.

It struck the exact same spot as Xiao Wangshu’s wound.

A black warhorse galloped into the battlefield, charging toward Tuoba Yunxiao’s side and catching all the assassins off guard.

The commander on the horse reached out, grabbed Xiao Wangshu’s left arm, and pulled her onto the horse in one swift motion.

Chen Chu’s appearance was once again outside of Xiao Wangshu’s expectations.

He had arrived too quickly, deviating significantly from her estimated time.

Seeing Chen Chu nock another arrow and aim it directly at the man who had just wounded her, Xiao Wangshu had no doubt that this shot was intended to take the man’s life.

In a flash, Xiao Wangshu leaned back and collapsed into his arms, letting out a muffled groan with a furrowed brow.

Bumped by her, Chen Chu’s aim wavered. The arrow grazed the black-clad man’s ear and buried itself entirely into a tree trunk ahead.

The man in black felt a chill in his heart.

If that arrow hadn’t veered off, it would have likely pierced through his skull.
With that thought, he retreated even faster.

Seeing his target vanish from sight while Xiao Wangshu lay in his arms, her brow furrowed in pain, Chen Chu swung his bow in a fit of rage. He batted away the arrows flying toward him and shouted at Tuoba Yunxiao-

“Third Prince, get on your horse!”

This Tuoba Prince was truly a source of endless trouble.

Tuoba Yunxiao was currently overwhelmed by a whirlwind of emotions and didn’t even notice Chen Chu’s hostile tone.

After mounting his horse, he assumed Chen Chu had brought troops with him rather than arriving alone. He didn’t linger, taking his last remaining guard to chase after Tuoba Jihui and the other two ahead.

Arrows fell like rain.

Facing a multitude of assassins alone while protecting the person in his arms, Chen Chu would be lying if he said it wasn’t a struggle.

Fortunately, his warhorse possessed extraordinary stamina. Even carrying two people, its speed was remarkable, and it soon carried him out of the assassins’ firing range.

Seven people on five horses galloped toward Xiao Wangshu’s manor, leaving the assassins behind.

—

The assassins pursued them relentlessly all the way to Xiao Wangshu’s manor, terrifying the hundred or so guards stationed there.

Yuchi Yan led the guards in sealing the gates. Instead of engaging the assassins head-on, they used arrows to pin the enemy down and hold their formation back.

He knew full well that these manor guards, whose training was lax at best, were no match for well-trained assassins in a direct confrontation.

All they could do now was stall for time and wait for the government troops from the city to arrive for rescue.

On the other side, the assassins were equally unwilling to give up.

They had infiltrated the Great Wei Capital and suffered immensely after being captured and thrown into the Great Wei Military Camp, losing many of their comrades.

Now that they had finally escaped, their long-planned operation was on the verge of success.

As long as they completed this mission, they could return to their homeland and enjoy wealth and honor for the rest of their lives.

How could they possibly give up now?

The two sides reached a stalemate, and the assassins’ attacks grew increasingly fierce.

The men in black dispersed, no longer obsessing over the main gate. Instead, they prepared to infiltrate the manor from all directions.

The guards and servants on the manor felt their scalps tingle with fear, their legs turning weak.

Only under Chen Chu’s intimidating presence did they steel themselves to pick up their weapons and resist the assassins.

—

While the perimeter of the manor was in total chaos, the interior wasn’t much better.

Xiao Wangshu was arguably the most seriously injured among them, her right shoulder pierced through by an arrow. The bandages wrapping her wound were already soaked through with blood, a sight that made anyone who saw it wince in pain.

The manor’s doctor had pulled out the arrow and applied what medicine was available, providing a crude, temporary dressing.

Tuoba Jihui was slightly better off; it was his arm that had been pierced.

Moreover, he was a man of the steppes, and his constitution was naturally sturdier than that of a sheltered young lady like Xiao Wangshu.

While an arrow through the arm seemed grave to Fang Qiluo, to him, it was actually nothing much.

“Miss! General Lu has brought men to the rescue and is currently capturing those spies and assassins!” Yuchi Yan rushed into the room to report.

Xiao Wangshu leaned against the headboard and opened her eyes. She calmly instructed him, “Just cooperate with General Lu. Additionally, send someone back to the Chancellor’s Mansion to request the Household Physician to come and treat our wounds. Remember to tell them these are arrow wounds so they bring the appropriate medicines.”

“Yes!” Yuchi Yan quickly withdrew again.

Xiao Wangshu looked at the others in the room, a faint smile pulling at the corners of her mouth. “It’s safe now. Everyone, go and get some rest.”

“Cousin…” Fang Qiluo sat by the bed, unable to set her mind at ease.

Xiao Wangshu comforted her, “I’m fine, older cousin. You were frightened today as well. Go and rest quickly.”

Fang Qiluo thought about it and realized there was indeed nothing she could do by staying there.

With that in mind, she stood up and left with the Tuoba siblings.

Before leaving the room, Tuoba Xin turned back to urge her, “Wangshu, make sure you get some good rest.”

Xiao Wangshu nodded to her and watched them exit the room.
