Chapter 90 – Watching Over the Lady in the Sun 1

“Miss Wang, heaven is watching what people do.

“Since we are both women, why must you make things so difficult for another woman?

“When you treated her that way, did you ever think that your own today might be a hundred or a thousand times more miserable than hers?”

As Xiao Wangshu finished speaking, Shopkeeper Wang’s daughter snapped her head up to look at her, her resentful gaze mixed with a hint of terror.

Luo Xing and Yang Ping immediately tightened their grip on her, fearing she might lung forward and bite Xiao Wangshu’s neck.

“I’m in a good mood today, so I’m talking a bit more. If you’ve forgotten those trivial matters that were so insignificant to you, I’ll help you remember them.”

Xiao Wangshu smiled brightly. She picked up a piece of yam cake from the table and took a small bite. After finishing it, she instructed Luo Xing and Yang Ping, “Take her to the back. Deal with it cleanly. Don’t let it interfere with me hosting my guest.”

“Yes!” Luo Xing and Yang Ping answered in unison.

Yang Ping went as far as to tear a piece of cloth from his own sleeve and stuff it into the mouth of Shopkeeper Wang’s daughter.

Facing the girl’s venomous, vengeful glare, Xiao Wangshu returned a smile. Her vermillion lips parted slightly as she took another leisurely bite of the yam cake.

After Luo Xing and Yang Ping dragged the woman away, Ruan Fuxin finished wrapping the banknotes in cloth. He said to Xiao Wangshu, “If Miss has no further instructions, your subordinate will head out to handle the business.”

Xiao Wangshu looked at him and nodded.

Ruan Fuxin rose and took his leave.

Not long after he left, another knock sounded at the door.

Shuxia announced from outside, “Miss, General Chen has arrived.”

Xiao Wangshu rose to open the door. Outside, Chen Chu’s nine-foot-tall frame was so massive that his head nearly brushed the top of the doorframe.

Sunlight hit him, casting a giant shadow that completely enveloped Xiao Wangshu.

“I almost thought it had turned dark,” Xiao Wangshu remarked with a light laugh.

Chen Chu didn’t react immediately, asking her, “What?”

Xiao Wangshu teased, “Look down, General. There isn’t a speck of light on me. How could I not think it was dark?”

“There is always light on you, Miss.”

After Chen Chu spoke, he stepped aside to clear a path, letting the sunlight fall upon her.

In truth, he hadn’t noticed he was blocking the sun at all just now.

To him, it seemed there was always light on her.

She was just as dazzling even without the sun shining down.

“Do you know, General? Not everyone is suited to stand in the sun. The sun feels too warm on the body-so warm it makes one want to be lazy and drowsy. And when one is too sleepy, things become exceptionally dangerous.”

Xiao Wangshu led him toward the front hall.

Dealing with matters that couldn’t see the light of day was more convenient in the backyard where it wouldn’t attract attention.

However, when hosting a guest, staying in the backyard would be impolite.

Listening to Xiao Wangshu’s idle talk, Chen Chu frowned slightly and simply asked, “Do you like basking in the sun, Miss?”

Xiao Wangshu smiled. “Of course I like it. It’s so warm; who wouldn’t like it?”

If possible, who wouldn’t want to stand cleanly in the sunlight?

But she had lost the right to such leisure a long time ago.

Such a warm, drowsy life-such a state of complete relaxation-she had only experienced it once in her entire past life:

When she was on the verge of death.

“The Chancellor’s Mansion is heavily guarded. If you wish to sunbathe, Miss, you can lie in your own courtyard and do so whenever you wish.” Chen Chu did not understand why Xiao Wangshu possessed such thin-ice caution.

It was as if every step she took was on the edge of a blade, where the slightest slip would mean being crushed to pieces and losing everything.

But it was just sunbathing. What kind of disaster could come from that?

Could it be that she was too badly frightened by the last assassination attempt?

Hearing Chen Chu’s words, Xiao Wangshu only gave a soft chuckle and did not respond.

Then, Chen Chu added, “I have a day of rest every five days. If you are afraid, Miss, you may summon me.”
“Oh?” Xiao Wangshu’s eyebrows arched slightly, surprised by his words. “And what brings the General here?”

Chen Chu pursed his lips, his posture stiff as he forced out each word: “To watch over you while you sunbathe, Miss.”

“Pfft-”

In all the time she had spent in this alternate world, this was the first time Xiao Wangshu had laughed out loud.

Her narrow, cold, and elegant eyes curved, looking like a spring pool brimming with life. As the sunlight fell into her gaze, it shimmered like ripples on water.

Chen Chu lowered his head and looked away. Although he didn’t understand why she was laughing so heartily, seeing the joy in her eyes caused the corners of his own mouth to lift unconsciously.

“The General is quite the joker. You are a busy man; on your rare day of rest, how could I possibly drag you along to sunbathe?”

Xiao Wangshu composed herself, the smile on her face fading slightly.

Chen Chu replied earnestly, “I am not joking.”

Xiao Wangshu froze. Looking up into Chen Chu’s sincere gaze, the smile vanished from her face completely.

It was nearly the twelfth lunar month, and the winter wind was biting, making people feel stiff and dull. For a moment, she couldn’t tell if the warmth she felt came from the winter sun or from the sincerity of the man beside her.

“Then I must thank you, General,” Xiao Wangshu said, a smile gracing her lips once more.

The two entered the main hall and went upstairs to the second-floor tea room, a path they knew well.

Chen Chu had made time to visit today to collect a token from Xiao Wangshu so he could search her manor for spies.

“General, please try to be gentle when you lead the search. Everything on the manor is newly built; I spent money that hadn’t even warmed in my pocket yet, and the structures can’t handle much impact.”

Before handing the jade seal to Chen Chu, Xiao Wangshu offered a reminder.

Chen Chu nodded immediately. “I will make sure the men are careful. If anything is damaged, I will pay for the repairs out of my own pocket.”

He didn’t spend money on wine or women, nor did he engage in political bribery. He only sent ten taels of silver back to his foster parents each month and paid the servants at the General’s residence. Having collected his military salary for so many years without spending much, he had quite a lot saved up.

“With those words from the General, I can rest easy.” Xiao Wangshu placed the golden toad jade seal, which was only the size of a pastry, into Chen Chu’s hand.

Chen Chu gripped the seal, cupped his fists, and took his leave.

Not long after he left, Luo Xing came up to the tea room to report to Xiao Wangshu. “Miss, Shopkeeper Wang’s daughter has been dealt with.”

“Is she definitely dead?” Xiao Wangshu asked.

Luo Xing answered with certainty, “Yes!”

He and Yang Ping, two grown men, had strangled her with a hemp rope. Even after she stopped moving, they kept pulling for a long while until her neck snapped. Afterward, they checked her breath and watched her for a long time to be sure.

He had only come to report after General Chen left.

“Very well. Go and handle the aftermath. Tell Jiang Linhai and Li Ya to come here.”

“Yes!” Luo Xing bowed and withdrew.

Xiao Wangshu watched his retreating figure for a moment before sitting down to drink her tea.

Back then, Chen Chu had selected six soldiers to serve as her guards. Luo Xing and Yang Ping had been trained by Qin Tai, so they had always stayed by her side under Qin Tai’s lead.

Jiang Linhai and Li Ya were soldiers under Yuchi Yan’s command, though Qin Tai often helped train them as well. Yuchi Yan’s physique was not suited for martial arts, and he wasn’t particularly good at training them himself.

After Yuchi Yan was assigned to manage the Jade Feast Pavilion and the manor, Jiang Linhai and Li Ya were tasked with keeping an eye on Shopkeeper Wang. They had only returned today after completing their mission.

In terms of combat training, Yuchi Yan might not be as good as Qin Tai. However, in terms of temperament, Yuchi Yan was much more steady. Having followed him for so long, Jiang Linhai and Li Ya were clearly more composed than Luo Xing and Yang Ping, and far less impulsive.

Only with steady people could she feel at ease sending them on distant assignments.
