  3. Chapter 5

The grandfather and grandson fled in a rage after their sound beating.

I borrowed Xie Jingci’s authority to laugh like a little villain, kicking my legs with delight as I lay in his arms.

I couldn’t gloat for long. Once he had tidied the damage to his room, he turned to settle accounts with me.

“Why did you bite him?”

Wasn’t that over? Why bring it up again?

Was he planning to punish both sides—beat those two first, then come back for me?

I bolted. Xie Jingci had expected it. He caught one of my hind legs before I got away.

I twisted around on instinct and bit him without thinking. The moment my teeth closed on him, I regretted it.

Unlike that useless quacker, Xie Jingci had long since gone beyond an ordinary mortal body. My bite didn’t even break through the spiritual energy protecting him.

It hurt my teeth instead.

Wah.

Frowning, Xie Jingci pried my jaws open. He touched a fang lightly and let go only after making sure it wasn’t loose.

At the sight of my big, tearful eyes, he swallowed whatever reproach he’d been about to make.

“No more biting people,” he said, settling me on his lap. “If Qiao Huaizhong wants something, let him have it. Don’t put yourself in danger over a few possessions.”

“If he tries to hurt you, hide. My spiritual seal is on you. If you’re in danger, I’ll come back at once.”

So he’d guessed why I’d bitten the duck voice. Then again, Qiao Huaizhong was obviously a practiced thief. He’d nearly stolen Xie Jingci’s home bare.

I felt much better knowing I hadn’t been blamed for no reason.

Balancing on his thigh, I magnanimously laid my tail across his wrist. Perhaps if I acted cute enough, he’d forget I’d bitten him just now.

His memory wasn’t quite that bad. He studied my patchy, thunder-blasted fur, lost in thought.

After a moment, he brought two fingers together in a sword gesture and opened a cut on his index finger.

A drop of blood with a strange fragrance welled up. He put the bleeding finger into my mouth.

I stared at him, stunned, as my tongue instinctively swept two drops from his fingertip.

Before I could properly taste it, he drew that sweet, cool, fragrant finger away.

I raised my head to follow it without thinking. Xie Jingci stopped me with a finger against my forehead.

“That’s enough.” He stroked the fresh down growing on my head. “Two drops will heal the thunder burns. Your body couldn’t bear any more.”

Who said so? Who? I could take as much as he gave me!

Two drops were a lovely taste, but nowhere near enough to cure the demon poison in my body.

I’d have liked to suck down a few more while I had the chance. Unfortunately, I’d played the fool too convincingly. Xie Jingci truly thought I was a fragile little demon and refused to feed me another drop.

As a demon living under someone else’s roof, I had to bow my head and give up for now.

But knowing when to stop? Never.

I’d only press for more.

Xie Jingci hated demons who coveted his flesh and blood, yet for these minor wounds of mine, he’d cut himself to feed me.

What did that mean?

To him, I was no longer a stray fox by the roadside, or merely a temporary housemate who happened to share his air.

He could deny it all he liked. His actions showed he cared about me.

And caring was often the first step in a fox’s taming of a human.
