When I Stopped Clinging, My Husband Panicked - Chapter 2
I was a homebody with social anxiety.
Work and socializing both terrified me.
If my sister hadn’t insisted I get a job, I probably would have avoided them for the rest of my life.
I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t nervous.
Pei Jin could clearly tell. He volunteered a few funny stories from work.
Like how, when he’d first started, he’d been so nervous that he’d answered a call from a food delivery driver with “Understood.”
Or the time he’d had coffee while working late and ended up with a mouthful of grounds.
He was obviously trying to make me laugh, but it worked.
“So how did you get over the embarrassment?” I asked.
“Easy. If you’re not embarrassed, there’s no embarrassment.”
Seeing that I still looked uncertain, he suddenly spoke with great solemnity.
“Jiang Yu.”
“Hmm?”
“Believe that the world revolves around you.”
I stared at him. Only then did he laugh.
“Isn’t that what you shout from the bed, hands on your hips, whenever you beat a game?”
“Aah! Stop talking!”
Despite my protest, I’d relaxed considerably. We shared a small piece of cake, and then I watched him get the bathroom ready so we could take a bath together.
But then—
Jiang Zhu: [Have you read those documents?]
Jiang Zhu: [If you show up tomorrow without a clue, you’re dead.]
At the messages on my phone, I abandoned Pei Jin without hesitation and rushed into the study with my files.
“You go ahead and bathe!”
He looked as though he wanted to say something, but I shut the study door in a flash.
Despite my solemn intention to study, I didn’t finish the files.
My sister had even slipped in a document on corporate culture.
Me: [Do I have to read this stuff too? I’m only helping out for a few days!]
Me: [I’m not an intern. And Pei Jin only got home today. I want some couple time.]
Me: [I’m an openly acknowledged nepotism hire! I’m Jiang Zhu’s sister!]
Sis: [1.]
Me: [Yes, Your Majesty!]
With rebellion out of the question, I miserably opened the file and began studying.
Three minutes later, I dropped my head onto it and fell asleep.
I was still confused when I woke the next morning.
“Wasn’t I reading the files?”
Amused, Pei Jin pinched my cheek. “I found you asleep in the study last night, so I carried you back.”
He was about to say something else when I shot upright and charged into the dressing room.
“I’m going to be late! My sister told me to report to her place early!”
Mornings were always a mad rush.
Mostly because I hadn’t planned or prepared anything. Only with Pei Jin’s help did I manage to make it out the door.
Just before I left, he looked at me in my rather formal outfit, a little dazed.
“Is something wrong with it?” I asked.
“No. You look beautiful. It caught me off guard.”
I giggled and was about to give him a hug when my phone rang.
I pulled my arms back at once. “I’m going, I’m going! My sister hates people who can’t manage their time!”
Pei Jin clearly wanted to say something.
I didn’t have time to find out. I just waved.
“Travel safely! Have a good trip! Text me if you need anything!”
It wasn’t until I saw his message that it clicked.
Pei Jin: [You didn’t kiss me before you left today.]
So that was what I’d forgotten!
Me: [I’ll make it up to you next time!]
