I dreamed of the day the zombie tide began.

It had been an utterly ordinary weekend. My roommates and I were playing basketball on the court when Pei Wen appeared at the far end with a shoulder bag.

Seeing how much fun I was having, he didn’t call me over. He merely sat cross-legged on the grass, took out his laptop, and began studying.

Then a scream rang out beyond the court.

It was followed by sobbing and wails of agony.

I turned and saw one girl pinning another to the ground.

At first, I assumed it was an ordinary scuffle. Only when blood sprayed all over the people nearby did everyone realize the danger.

The crowd erupted into chaos. Some called emergency services, some went looking for teachers, and others clutched their heads and cried in terror.

Sensing something deeply wrong in the air, I stared fixedly at the disturbance.

Then I watched the girl who had already fallen twist her limbs and rise again.

Her skin was deathly pale from blood loss. Black lines spread across her body like veins, and the exposed wounds on her arms and neck were horrifying.

Her eyes were empty.

Danger!

I spun around and charged toward Pei Wen.

He had taken off his headphones and was looking around in bewilderment.

There was no time to explain. I grabbed him and ran in the opposite direction.

Everything after that became a blur.

I fled blindly, trying to find a way out, but there were too many zombies. They soon blocked us in.

I snatched up a badminton racket and swung wildly at them.

Those things were much tougher than I had imagined. Several blows did nothing but slow them down.

Suddenly, a zombie attacked from behind me.

It was so fast I couldn’t even react.

Just as I resigned myself to death, Pei Wen embraced me.

As he had when we were children, he shielded me with his own body.

The zombie’s gaping mouth sank into his shoulder.

Hot blood splashed into my eyes, dyeing everything in my sight scarlet.

Half-mad, I smashed the zombie away, gathered Pei Wen against me with one arm, and ran without regard for anything else.

I saw survivors enter the cafeteria and tried to follow, but they refused to open the door.

One student gritted his teeth. “I don’t want to be the villain here, but you’ve seen it yourself. Anyone bitten by a zombie will change. Your friend can’t be saved!”

I looked at my two roommates. They lowered their heads, unable to meet my eyes.

Reason told me they had done nothing wrong.

Emotionally, I hated them to death.

Pei Wen raised his head. The black lines had already spread up his neck.

He smiled gently at me, then addressed the people inside. “Qi Chuan wasn’t bitten. Let him in.”

The student nodded. “All right.”

I held Pei Wen tighter, refusing to loosen my grip in the slightest.

He clasped my hand. His eyes were red, but he wouldn’t look at me.

He was afraid I would go soft.

“Qi Chuan, let me go.”
