Chapter 16

Jin Xiao realized who the culprit was almost instantly and glared over ferociously.

Chu Zhao looked up slowly, meeting her gaze with a provocative look of her own.

Jin Xiao didn’t have time to deal with her; she had to try and save her own grade.

If she failed, she would…

At the thought of what might happen, a flash of genuine terror crossed her eyes.

Modifying Zhao Qinghe’s handwriting wasn’t easy. She only had five minutes left and had to race against the clock.

Chu Zhao noticed this as well and let out a small smile.

So, Jin Xiao’s power couldn’t compare to a Scholar’s after all.

Seeing that Jin Xiao was indeed slow at making changes, Chu Zhao took a moment to look at the others.

The other players’ exam papers had indeed run into problems.

Extra strokes had been added to their names, yet judging by their reactions, they were completely unaware of it.

Did Jin Xiao’s power include a masking effect?

Her malice was plain for all to see.

While Chu Zhao didn’t know the consequences of failing, seeing Jin Xiao frantically trying to fix her answers suggested they were far from pleasant.

Chu Zhao composed herself, checked her own paper, and then began modifying the players’ papers.

This class was already filled with more Wraiths than people; she needed the living players to help share the pressure. Besides, she hadn’t managed to squeeze any information out of them yet.

*

Ming Ying was staring at her exam paper in distress.

Though she had tried her best to cram, the time had been too short. She didn’t know if she could even scrape a 60.

She didn’t know the consequences of failing, but she knew they wouldn’t be good.

Just as the thought crossed her mind, Ming Ying’s eyelid suddenly twitched.

She rubbed her eyes in disbelief.

What the hell? Could words just jump around on an exam paper by themselves?

Her first instinct was to fix it, but then she remembered the Edict’s rule about no erasures. Her heart instantly sank.

She was definitely going to face the punishment.

Ming Ying wasn’t the only one who noticed; the players all wore expressions of varying degrees of despondency.

The Wraiths had the power to change their papers, yet their own abilities were useless for the exam. What could they do?

In those five minutes, Chu Zhao hurried to pull their names and scores back up. Fortunately, there were many multiple-choice and fill-in-the-blank questions.

Having handled it with ease, Chu Zhao looked back at Jin Xiao. She found that the girl had only managed to fix a small portion of her paper and was sweating profusely from anxiety.

Chu Zhao clicked her tongue, feeling satisfied with the power of a Scholar for the first time.

She was a Scholar, a favored one of the Truth.

Yes, the Truth.

She gave her own paper one final check-

[A 100-point exam paper belonging to Zhao Qinghe.]

[An answer sheet worthy of a qualified Apprentice Scholar.]

Chu Zhao smiled.

She was satisfied.

Suddenly, Chu Zhao felt a heavy gaze on her.

She looked up and saw Lin Qiu staring at her grimly, her eyes a blood-red hue.

Chu Zhao: “?”

Wait, does this count as cheating too?

I’m not changing my own; I’m just looking out for my classmates!

[Exam Concluded]

Amidst Jin Xiao’s shrill scream, the exam papers and pens turned into specks of light and gradually vanished.

In the next second, golden scores appeared above everyone’s heads.

A pure gold ‘100’ with shimmering special effects hung right over Zhao Qinghe’s head.

Chu Zhao immediately @’d Li Qingyin in the group chat: [Qingyin, Qingyin, come here, quick!]

Li Qingyin: [1]

Lin Qiu’s cold gaze landed on Jin Xiao. Just as she was about to step forward, she suddenly paused.

She saw the bloody score above Jin Xiao’s head.

[17]

The blood-red color in Lin Qiu’s eyes faded for a moment, her murderous intent replaced by a brief flash of confusion.

Jin Xiao let out a wail of despair. Her first reaction was to lung at Zhao Qinghe with ghost-like speed.

“I’ll kill you!”

Lin Qiu didn’t understand what was happening, but she reacted purely on instinct, kicking Jin Xiao back.

In the next instant, a bolt of golden lightning struck down. Jin Xiao was silenced instantly. All that remained on the ground was a small pile of black ash and an eerie red pen.

At this moment, not just the players, but even the ‘students’ were in a daze.

Ever since the Autonomous Council had unified the students, they had lived in peace for a year. They had almost forgotten what the academy used to be like. The Edict was more heartless than anyone.

[Failure to pass the exam: Obliteration.]

Golden characters appeared in the air, radiating an inviolable authority.

Under everyone’s gaze, the golden words slowly faded.

Everyone: “…”

In that moment, Zhao Qinghe suddenly became the center of attention.

Unlike before, these gazes were no longer filled with mockery or greed, but… fear.

Jin Xiao hadn’t been particularly strong, but she had been able to act so arrogantly in class because of her ability.

The others were of the same kind as her, so they could resist her will to some extent and avoid having their names changed, but they still didn’t want to make an enemy of her.

But Zhao Qinghe… she had changed them so fast… too fast…

Caught between fear and murderous intent, the crowd wavered.

Chu Zhao reacted faster than any of them. She smiled and said, “Qingyin, you’re here.”

A woman walked in from outside. She glanced at the black ash on the floor, her expression turning subtle.

She then looked at the still-dazed Lin Qiu and said in a flat tone, “Jin Xiao failed twice before. This was her third time.”

One of those times was because she had intervened, and the other was due to Qinghe’s methods. But this time…

Li Qingyin discreetly scanned the room before her gaze joined the others, landing on Zhao Qinghe.

She smiled. “Wickedness brings its own destruction. The Edict is wise.”
The “people”: “…”

The players: “…”

Did this mean that as long as there were constant exams, Zhao Qinghe had the power to kill them all?

The players looked at each other, trembling with fear.

Under Li Qingyin’s watchful gaze, the “people” didn’t dare do anything to Zhao Qinghe either. They could only watch as the group left. As they walked away, Chu Zhao casually picked up a pen and stuffed it into her pocket.

Lin Qiu’s eyes still held a faint, bloody tint. It wasn’t very painful, but it made her irritable.

Once they were out of the classroom, she couldn’t help but look at Chu Zhao and ask coldly, “How did you do it?”

Chu Zhao replied, “She tried to change my name, but I caught her. So I changed it back.”

Her nonchalant words left the other three speechless.

Li Qingyin said with a subtle expression, “In that case, you could say you have a bit of self-defense capability now.”

It was just that the restrictions were a bit heavy; it could only be used during an exam.

Chu Zhao nodded. “Qingyin, come with me to find the teacher.”

Li Qingyin’s lip twitched. “We’re not going back to the dormitory?”

Lin Qiu still felt like she had a bone to pick, her mind full of questions. “You helped them cheat.”

Her eyes were like blood, turning redder as she spoke. A needle-like, shadow-like chill followed her words. As if affected by something, Chu Zhao’s movements stiffened; in the gloom, she could only see those blood-red eyes.

“How were you able to get a perfect score?”

Chu Zhao immediately regained her train of thought and said clearly, “I was just helping my classmates.”

“Unity and friendship,” she continued. “Cheating is for seeking personal gain. I wasn’t seeking personal gain, so I didn’t cheat.”

Li Qingyin and Zhu Qing’an each grabbed one of Lin Qiu’s hands. “Qiuqiu, calm down.”

Lin Qiu: “…”

The look in her eyes grew slightly dazed, and the burning malice cooled a little.

Lin Qiu continued coldly, “Then how did you get a perfect score?”

Chu Zhao: “Because I’m excellent.”

Lin Qiu: “?”

Chu Zhao: “If you don’t believe me, I’ll do another test paper for you when we get back.”

The blood-red color in Lin Qiu’s eyes finally faded, leaving only a hint of redness. “Fine. When we get back, you do another one and I’ll see.”

Li Qingyin also let out a sigh of relief. She glanced at Chu Zhao again. “Qiuqiu hates cheating. Did you really have to help them cheat?”

Lin Qiu was the type who would frown just hearing the word, and she once again looked at Chu Zhao with cold eyes.

Chu Zhao: “If they didn’t cheat, they would have died.”

She spoke with an air of compassion. “As the class monitor, I don’t want people in my class to keep dying.”

“We are a loving class.”

The three of them: “…”

You didn’t exactly show any mercy when you changed Jin Xiao’s test paper, did you?

Silenced by Chu Zhao’s use of the word “loving,” Li Qingyin stopped talking.

Zhu Qing’an hadn’t intended to voice an opinion in the first place. In the end, only Lin Qiu offered a cold sneer. “You really are ‘loving’ toward your classmates.”

Chu Zhao: “Qiuqiu, I helped you get revenge. Aren’t you happy?”

Lin Qiu: “…”

Chu Zhao: “Instead of thanking me, you’re doubting me.”

Lin Qiu: “…”

Chu Zhao: “Don’t think this is over just because you’re staying quiet.”

Lin Qiu: “…”

Li Qingyin cleared her throat. “Didn’t you want to find the teacher? Let’s go together.”

Chu Zhao finally let Lin Qiu off the hook for the moment and turned to ask, “Qingyin, do you know where the broadcasting station is?”

Li Qingyin: “…What are you planning to do now?”

Chu Zhao: “I want to sing.”

Li Qingyin: “???”

As they spoke, they reached the third floor. Chu Zhao suddenly remembered something. “Where’s Yu Ge? Isn’t she in the same class as us?”

Li Qingyin: “She… temporarily lost her student status. She needs to wait.”

“Wait for what?”

Li Qingyin: “By the way, what are you looking for Teacher Yun for?”

Chu Zhao immediately tightened her grip on her bodyguard’s hand. “I think there’s something wrong with the teacher. Qingyin, are you afraid of the teacher?”

Li Qingyin: “…”

For a moment, she didn’t know how to answer.

After a long while, she said, “…Don’t go too far.”

The way Chu Zhao looked at her changed instantly. She was about to speak again when Lin Qiu cut her off.

Lin Qiu’s gaze was searching. “What do you want to do to the teacher?”

Li Qingyin acted like a thoughtful little translator. “Qiuqiu respects and loves her teachers very much. Don’t do anything reckless… at least not in front of her.”

After thinking it over, she added, “Qiuqiu, you wait outside the door.”

She felt that Chu Zhao was up to no good.

Lin Qiu: “No.”

As they said this, they had already reached the fourth floor.

Chu Zhao pushed the door open with practiced ease. “Teacher, we’ve come to find you. Surprise!”

Almost at the same moment she gripped Li Qingyin’s wrist, a [Reading] skill flew out.

She wanted to see exactly what kind of monster was hiding under Yun Shuang’s skin.

[Yun Shuang (NoGiggles)

Faith: Fraud ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?]

Just as she saw the first three lines, the rest turned into a mess of corrupted code.

‘Teacher Yun’: “?”

*Ambushing me? Where are your manners?*

Li Qingyin’s eyes turned pitch black in an instant.

The lights in the room began to flicker. Li Qingyin’s figure appeared in every mirror, blood trickling down the glass surfaces-hauntingly beautiful yet macabre.

Chu Zhao’s eyelid jumped. She immediately lowered her head, avoiding any reflective surfaces.

NoGiggles: “Wait! We can talk!”
