Why Is Mr. Handsome Always Angry? - Chapter 6
I got arrested.
To be precise, Mr. Handsome and I got arrested together.
When the argument with the restaurant manager started, I had intended to settle it peacefully, turning a big problem into a small one and a small one into nothing. But Mr. Handsome was too stubborn. He absolutely refused to follow my example and grovel.
Afraid he might pull out a gun and shoot everyone, I cautiously tried to prevent any large movements on his part.
Then I misjudged my strength and punched the manager in the face.
Honestly, this was my first time in a police station.
“Will I go to prison?” I asked Mr. Handsome quietly, crouching in a corner with my hands over my head.
He ignored me.
He crouched beside me in the same position.
Yet something felt wrong.
Why did he look so good doing exactly the same thing?
I began posing and preening, secretly competing with him.
When it came to beauty, I, Xu Ye, had never lost to anyone.
Sure enough, my beauty got noticed.
The officer singled me out and told me to stop fidgeting.
Once again, I had endured a reprimand no one my age should have to bear.
“Tell me. Why were you fighting?” the officer asked sternly.
“They owed us money, then hit us!” the manager said indignantly from the other corner.
“I wasn’t asking you.”
Under the officer’s look, the manager wisely shut up.
“You talk.” He pointed at me.
My moment had arrived. “It’s a long story. We’ll have to start with when I was begging on the street…”
“Officer, let me explain.” Mr. Handsome interrupted again, his voice low.
How dare he keep cutting me off just because he was beautiful? Outrageous! I was going to beat him up!
At his faint glance, I unclenched my fists.
Next time. Definitely next time.
I felt rather defeated. In a few short sentences, Mr. Handsome had explained the speech I’d spent three minutes composing in my head.
“All this over something so small?” The officer shook his head helplessly.
The manager and his underlings left to wait for us to compensate him later.
Mr. Handsome and I still had to provide our identification details.
“Name?”
“Xu Ye. Xu as in Xu Ye, Ye as in ‘yay.’” I scurried over to answer like an eager lackey.
“And him?” The officer pointed at Mr. Handsome, sitting in a chair with a dark expression.
I was lost for words.
I scratched my head. After all this time, I still didn’t know his name.
“Um, the officer wants to know your name,” I told him, rubbing my hands together.
“You don’t know?” He stared as though he wanted to bore a hole through my face.
“Heh. To be perfectly honest, no.”
“Zhi Mu.” His lips moved. “Zhi as in a branch, Mu as in a tree.”
His gaze never left me throughout.
He seemed to be searching for something. That probing look threatened to swallow me whole.
Hmm. Zhi Mu.
Now that I knew his name, I decided to keep calling him Mr. Handsome.
Next, I entered my ID number.
The computer reported no matching person.
The officer looked at me suspiciously. “Did you enter it wrong? Try again.”
I tried three times.
I even tried my parents’ ID numbers several times.
No matching person. Any of them.
That couldn’t be right. Was my entire family unregistered?
My eyes widened. “I think I’ve discovered something enormous,” I muttered.
Mr. Handsome and the officer both looked at me.
“My dad was so cheap he never registered any of us, just to save a few yuan in fees!”
“…”
The officer seemed to understand something. “Then where do you live?”
He had me there.
Now I was finally panicking.
I had acquired another offense: inventing a false identity.
I envied Mr. Handsome a little.
He had a household registration. The officer nodded at him.
Meanwhile, I resumed my original position in the corner, hands over my head.
He finished filling in his information, turned, and watched me in silence.
Humiliated, I turned away. “I know my dad deserves a scolding. But if you laugh at him, your dad’s going to die.”
“…” He clenched his teeth, as though suppressing something for a long time. “Xu Ye, has a dog ever eaten your brain?”
“You… you…” I looked up in horror. “You’re planning something that cruel for me too?”
Furious at being exposed, he glared at me, then turned to leave without looking back.
“Don’t go!” I called. I would rather die than go to prison.
I could start over if I died, anyway.
He had no interest in hearing me. His steps only quickened.
“AAAAAH! MY LEGS! MY LEGS!” My screaming finally stopped him at the door.
Despair covered my face. “I don’t know what’s happened! I can’t feel my legs!”
The officer looked at me sprawled on the floor, barely breathing, and said slowly, “You’ve been squatting too long. Your legs have gone numb.”
Doggedly dragging my half-crippled body upright, I went over and caught Mr. Handsome’s coat.
“You can’t abandon me.”
He seemed to consider something, then briskly knocked my hand away. “Why?”
I stood on tiptoe. His body stiffened slightly as I leaned close to his ear and whispered sweetly, “If you abandon me, I’ll tell the police you have a gun and you want to kill me.”
His expression became complicated. I knew my threat had worked.
I was still congratulating myself when I realized he had already pushed the door open and left.
Now I was really angry.
He was blatantly provoking me.
Fine. He had asked for it.
Gritting my teeth at his retreating back, I deliberately raised my voice. “Officer! He has a gun! It’s in the inner pocket of his coat!”
I acquired yet another offense: making a false accusation.
They found nothing. The officer was very annoyed with himself for believing me.
I refused to give up. “Then it’s in his car!”
“Evidence?” He looked down at me, his voice like well water in winter, chilling me to the bone.
In a voice only we could hear, he added, “I’m actually very curious. How did you know I had a gun in my pocket earlier?”
Because you killed me, lots of times. With that gun.
I clenched my fists and met his gaze in silence.
The air seemed to freeze. In the quiet station, only our breathing remained.
Oh, right. The officer was still alive too.
“Miss, stop making trouble. If you can’t prove your identity, and no one can vouch for you, I’m afraid you’ll have to spend tonight here,” he said, shaking his head.
“I can vouch for her.” Mr. Handsome looked at me calmly. “Her name is Xu Ye. She’s my wife.”
