Chapter 3

The wedding day arrived as scheduled.

I had no idea what Eunuch Gao said after he returned to the palace, but the Emperor really was alarmed.

I heard that there had been two uproars in the inner residence of Lian Manor, both of which had been suppressed.

In wonderful spirits, I touched the heavy gold hairpins on my head and climbed into the bridal sedan.

All these days, I had never once met with Lian Sheng.

But I had met the adopted daughter from the rumors.

A white dress, a jade hairpin-she looked terribly plain and pure.

When she looked at me, she said gently, “Miss Song, instead of coming to break off the engagement, you insist on marrying into Lian Manor. Must you really make things so difficult for everyone?”

Perhaps my reputation as a sickly invalid was simply too famous, because her sense of superiority was very strong.

“I believe you must know as well that my elder brother does not want to marry you. He is only being forced by…”

I found this rather interesting.

“Why doesn’t he come say that himself? Why send you to speak to me, his fiancée? Could it be that he’s as timid as a mouse?”

Lian Xuan’er said, “Naturally, it’s because he doesn’t wish to see you.”

Sitting in the carriage, I lifted the curtain and frowned.

“But I am his rightful fiancée.”

Then I gave a malicious little smile.

“I insist on marrying him. What of it?”

And I did not forget to cough twice.

One had to stay in character.

Lian Xuan’er’s expression slowly darkened. Clearly, she was furious.

After a moment, she smiled brilliantly. “Then let’s give it a try.”

Thinking back on this, I walked step by step into Lian Manor in my exquisite wedding robes.

Lian Xuan’er, you’d better be capable.

Don’t disappoint me now.

Chapter 8

Holding the other end of the red silk ribbon, Lian Sheng had clearly been forced here.

His lips were pressed together, his eyes filled with confusion and struggle.

Lian Xuan’er stood among the crowd, her knuckles clenched white.

“First bow, to Heaven and Earth!”

My mother’s face was cold.

“Second bow, to your elders!”

Lian Sheng’s body went rigid.

“Husband and wife-”

“Wait.”

He spoke.

I let out a long breath of relief.

Lifting my veil, I looked as though I were frightened and uneasy. “Husband?”

Lian Sheng looked somewhat guilty. “I’m sorry, Roujia.”

Although the Lian Family disliked me, they were even less willing to allow anything to go wrong at this moment. No one had expected such a sudden turn.

Only Lian Xuan’er curved her lips into a smile. Lian Sheng took her hand, closed his eyes, and said, “I’m sorry. I promised Xuan’er that I would marry her.”

What a brave and delightful pair of illicit lovebirds.

I was practically thrilled.

This Lian Xuan’er truly had some skill. She had not disappointed me.

Then, sobbing, I ran out.

And crashed straight into the small procession that had just arrived from the palace.

At its head was none other than the Emperor.

He had come in plain clothes for an incognito visit, and also to take a look at this marriage dispute that had dragged on for so long.

The timing was perfect.

I had originally planned to plunge headfirst into the lake, then swim back up.

But at some point, someone had appeared by the artificial hill. I was moving too fast, and in one careless moment, I knocked him in with me.

The other person was utterly shocked.

“You!”

His face was cold, pale, and breathtakingly beautiful as he struggled in the water.

Idiot. He couldn’t swim.

I dragged him up while I was at it.

Then I heard the people over there shouting in panic, “Your Highness, the Crown Prince…!”

Unexpectedly, it was the Crown Prince.

That was very bad.

So I simply went with the situation and collapsed into his arms.

Yue Jing instinctively grabbed me, coughing so violently it seemed the world had gone dark around him.

Everyone came rushing over.

The whole place descended into chaos.
