Chapter 1

I am a perfectly ordinary person.

My one good point is that my grades are excellent. As for my looks, the most you could say is that I’m “not ugly.” My deskmate, however, is very “pretty.”

It feels a little wrong to call a boy “pretty,” but when you see a face that looks like Nüwa sculpted it bit by bit with painstaking care, “pretty” is the only word that comes to mind.

When we got back from P.E., my deskmate’s desk was piled high with gifts again. Some of them had even spilled over onto my side.

“Chen Wuyang, I like you!”

A girl’s loud confession rang through the hallway. I poked my head out to take a look-it was Lin Yiyi, the talented girl everyone had been talking about lately.

She’d gotten hugely popular after joining a talent show. These days, you could see her ads all over the streets.

Strange. Had she always been this pretty?

After staring at Lin Yiyi’s face for a while, a strange sense of dissonance welled up inside me. I shook my head and decided I must have fried my brain doing too many practice questions lately.

“Thank you for liking me… classmate…”

Not particularly interested in this daily recurring drama, I opened my workbook and kept grinding through problems.

I had no idea how much time had passed before it gradually quieted down outside. I lifted my head, rolled my neck, and closed my workbook with the satisfaction of a job well done.

The moment I relaxed, I felt a burning, impossible-to-ignore gaze locked tightly on me.

My stretching froze. Slowly, I turned my head.

Chen Wuyang was propping up his chin, his pretty eyes staring straight at me.

“Do you need something?” I asked stiffly.

I was a little scared of this deskmate of mine…

A tentacle pushed the workbook toward me. Chen Wuyang said lazily, “This. Explain it to me.”

Under the desk, a tentacle quietly wrapped around my ankle. I could even feel those tiny suckers.

I mean, whose deskmate is a tentacle monster?!

“Oh.” I discreetly shifted my butt, trying to move away.

Chen Wuyang arched one sharp brow, amusement glinting in his peach-blossom eyes. A tentacle grabbed my chair and yanked it hard in his direction-

Eek, Mom! I’m going to be eaten!

“If you sit that far away, I won’t be able to hear you!”

Chen Wuyang said it with a bright, cheerful smile.

Maybe in other people’s eyes, he was a kind and wonderful guy.

But, like, but seriously, tentacles that came out of who-knew-where and draped themselves over my shoulders and waist were really bad for my SAN!

I tried my hardest to hold my tears back, picked up my pen, and began explaining the problem to Chen Wuyang with trembling hands.

Put the tentacles away, bro!

A pink tentacle wrapped around my wrist. I could even feel the suckers on the underside of it sucking at my skin.

Tears welled in my eyes, but I didn’t dare blink. I was afraid that if I blinked, they would fall, and then Chen Wuyang would get angry and eat me!

No way, no way, no way!

“Are you about to cry?”

Excitement sparkled in Chen Wuyang’s eyes. He was always taking pleasure in watching me cry. He even stretched his index finger under my lashes, ready to catch the tears.

I hate this tentacle monster so much!

I took a deep breath, stiffened my neck, and stubbornly said no.

“Sand got in my eyes during P.E.!”

Stubborn from head to toe, and especially in the mouth-that was probably me.

Unexpectedly, Chen Wuyang was a terrible student. For all three years of high school, he had held the throne of last place as steadily as he held onto his good looks.

He and I became deskmates in our second year. Our homeroom teacher had planned for me, the top student in the grade, to refine Chen Wuyang’s character through proximity.

I’m sorry, Teacher. I’ve let you down!

On the first day we became deskmates, Chen Wuyang reached out a tentacle to shake my hand, and I fainted on the spot.

After that, I tentatively asked a lot of people about it. None of them could see them.

Was I the only one who could?

With tears in my eyes, I screamed internally, No way!

Please don’t force this weird heroine setting onto me!

Besides that, I could also see things like progress bars on certain people-but only when Chen Wuyang was present.

Resistance was useless. Our homeroom teacher was dead set on making me sit with him.

For some reason, Chen Wuyang liked clinging to me.

He liked stretching out tentacles no one else could see during class and stuffing them into my palm to wriggle around. He liked ignoring the lesson and staring straight at me. He liked… watching me cry…

And I happened to be the type whose tears leaked out at the slightest provocation.

I believed he was a pervert.

“Do you understand now?” I asked quietly.

As expected, Chen Wuyang shook his head.

You weren’t listening at all, were you?!

I talked until my mouth was dry, and you just stared at my face the whole time. Do you have any respect for my efforts?!

I was so angry I nearly cried, but when I saw the fingertip silently positioned under my eyes, I forced the tears back down.

“I’ll write out the process for you. Can you look it over by yourself first?”

I pleaded in a small voice, extremely nervous inside, terrified that Chen Wuyang might hit me with something like an “intelligence-lowering curse.”

Evil gods and the like should know how to curse people, right?

Relying on my many years of staying up late to follow Cthulhu-style novels, I immediately slapped the title of “evil god” onto Chen Wuyang.

Because when he faced girls who liked him, a pink substance would drift toward him. That was why I thought Chen Wuyang was probably something like an evil god, and I defined that substance as “affection.”

He couldn’t just be a plain old octopus monster, right?

I grumbled inwardly, then said aloud, “I’m going to do my homework now!”

Thank goodness Chen Wuyang nodded. A completely indifferent, take-it-or-leave-it kind of nod!

I quickly spread open another exercise book and began writing furiously.

My position as “number one” had been feeling a little shaky lately. I had to work even harder!

A girl from the bottom-ranking class had suddenly risen like a dark horse and jumped straight to second in the grade. They hadn’t found any problems during the recheck either.

Although it felt a little strange, maybe it was just my sense of crisis acting up!

Absolutely! Cannot! Let anyone take first place from me!

A fire blazed in my heart, and all my attention landed on the problems in front of me.

Something soft and slippery burrowed into my palm. I squeezed it and, without even looking up, said perfunctorily, “I’ll explain it to you later. Mark the questions first.”

“…Oh.”

Chen Wuyang wiggled the tentacle I was holding and answered lazily.
