Chapter 2

That position lasted all the way until self-study ended and it was time for dinner.

I had to admit, tentacles felt really nice…

I gave it another squeeze. It felt like one of those squishy stress-relief toys.

“Mm…” The person sleeping facedown on the desk let out a soft hum. I was so startled I quickly let go and shot to my feet.

My chair slid backward, scraping against the floor with a sharp screech.

Before I could slip out of the classroom, the tentacles waved through the air and wrapped around me again. One coiled around my waist, while four others latched onto my arms and legs.

“Is class over…?” Chen Wuyang lay sprawled over his desk, his face turned toward me, his eyes still misty with sleep.

He lifted his head and glanced at the clock above the blackboard. There was still a red mark on his cheek from being pressed against the desk while he slept. Bright red as it was, it didn’t look silly at all. If anything, it was kind of cute.

“Oh. Time to eat.” He sat up, leaned back in his chair, and stretched. Then he stood and said with shocking familiarity, “Let’s go. Dinner.”

No, excuse me, sir, how am I supposed to walk like this? I wanted to cry but had no tears.

“What’s wrong?” Chen Wuyang leaned in, bending slightly to bring his face closer to mine, mischief in his eyes. “Did something get tangled around you?”

With a stiff expression, I said blandly, “No. I sat too long. My legs fell asleep.”

“…Oh.” Chen Wuyang was obviously disappointed. The teasing in his peach-blossom eyes shifted into displeasure.

The instant he turned his head, tears rapidly pooled in my eyes.

Help. This was terrifying! I did not want to eat with him!

But there was no way I could say that out loud, so I could only follow behind Chen Wuyang, head lowered, keeping close to his every step.

His face was simply too eye-catching. The moment he stepped out of the classroom, everyone’s gaze was drawn over and locked firmly onto him.

Several huge streams of pink airflow rushed in from all directions and slipped into Chen Wuyang’s body.

Because he was so popular, everyone automatically ignored me walking beside him.

I secretly let out a breath of relief.

In a way, Chen Wuyang was practically a blessing for the socially anxious!

By the time we got to the cafeteria, the hall was already packed. I glanced at the menu and discovered that they had my favorite shredded pork with green peppers today!

Unfortunately, I wouldn’t be able to eat it today. I looked at the long line and regretfully joined the very end.

“You want that?”

I nodded weakly. “Mm…”

This was all Chen Wuyang’s fault. If not for him, I would have gotten it already!

“Huh?” A familiar coiling sensation came from my wrist. I shuddered, only to realize in shock that the person who had asked was Chen Wuyang!

Chen Wuyang’s voice sounded as if it had been drenched in thick honey, sticky and sweet. “Then you have to teach me properly later, okay?”

The tentacle around my wrist wrapped around me another time, tightening.

After saying that, Chen Wuyang took my hand and strode straight to the very front of the line.

His body temperature was very low, but unlike the icy chill of his tentacles, it was more like a piece of jade that had been warmed in someone’s palm for a while.

“Can you give us your spot?” he said to the first person in line, looking down at them.

Cold sweat nearly broke out all over me. I hurriedly tugged at his sleeve. “This isn’t good. Forget it…”

That student stared blankly at Chen Wuyang’s face for a moment, then blushed and smiled in a daze. “Sure…”

A thin pink mist seeped out of his body and was absorbed by the tentacles.

Chen Wuyang raised an eyebrow at me, looking a little smug, as if waiting for praise.

I hesitated before saying, “Uh, maybe we should still forget it…”

Chen Wuyang instantly became unhappy. He dragged me to the service window and called to the cafeteria auntie inside, “Fill it up with shredded pork and green peppers.”

The auntie inside reacted exactly the same way as the person just now. Sure enough, the tray she handed over was piled full of shredded pork with green peppers. She even forgot to charge me.

Awkwardly, I handed over my meal card. Only then did the auntie snap out of it and quickly swipe it for me.

Holding my tray, I said to Chen Wuyang, “Aren’t you eating? I’ll treat you!”

“No. It doesn’t taste good.” Chen Wuyang wrinkled his delicate nose, cast the food a disgusted glance, then immediately looked away.

I silently thought, But shredded pork with green peppers is really delicious…

Not long after I sat down, a girl strode toward my table.

I saw her out of the corner of my eye, but I assumed she was here for Chen Wuyang, so I continued eating my meal in perfect peace.

Who could have guessed that girl’s target was actually me?

“Jiang He!” she shouted.

I jumped, nearly choking, and looked up.

The girl was very pretty. Unlike Lin Yiyi, she had a bright, bold sort of beauty. Her hair was dyed a vivid red, making her stand out among the sea of obedient black-haired students.

This was the girl who had risen out of nowhere and pushed the original second-place student down to third.

“D-Do you need something?” My tongue tied itself in knots, and I had no idea what to say.

The girl lifted her snow-white chin and proudly issued her challenge. “It’s about time the top spot in the final exams changed hands!”

“…” I fell silent. Feeling the stares of all the students in the cafeteria, I wished I could crawl into a crack in the floor.

Just then, Chen Wuyang spoke. Propping up his chin, he looked so lazy it made people’s teeth itch. “Hey, are you blind?”

“What?” The girl didn’t react at first.

Chen Wuyang finally deigned to spare her a sliver of his attention. A smile hung at the corner of his mouth. “Looks like you’re not just blind. You’re deaf too.”

The girl’s face flushed red. She pointed her index finger at Chen Wuyang. “You’re the one ranked dead last, aren’t you? I’m warning you, don’t interfere with Jiang He’s studying. If there’s anything you don’t know, come ask me!”

“Tsk!” Chen Wuyang waved impatiently, as if shooing away a fly, and said with undisguised malice, “You’re at the bottom of the heap too. What gives you the right to teach me?”

The girl had been stabbed right where it hurt. She loudly declared her new identity. “I ranked second on the last monthly exam.”

“Oh, only second place!” Chen Wuyang curved his lips into a vicious smile. “A mere second place, barking here like a dog?”

This farce eventually ended with the appearance of the dean of students.

A sudden sense of crisis rose in me. As soon as I finished eating, I hurried to get back to the classroom.

Chen Wuyang wanted absolutely nothing to do with that. He dragged me along, refusing to go back, and shouted loudly, “Don’t you need to walk off your food? You’ll get fat!”

The two of us remained locked in a stalemate, neither of us giving in, our hands forming a perfectly balanced tug-of-war.

“My digestion is amazing!” I pulled hard at him like I was yanking out a radish-more accurately, yanking back my own arm. “If you don’t want to go back, I’ll go back by myself!”

“No! Take a walk with me!”

I also gave him a firm “No.”

Nothing-nothing was more important than studying!

“You’ll get stupid! If you don’t walk off your food, you’ll get stupid!” Chen Wuyang had accurately seized my weakness.

“Do you think I’m an idiot?” Despite saying that, I half-believed him and loosened my grip. In the next instant, Chen Wuyang pulled me right over.

“It’s true. Why would I lie to you?” Chen Wuyang pouted. Somehow, when he did it, it didn’t look effeminate at all. Instead, it made him seem incredibly innocent.

He pulled me onto the sports field, then headed toward the small grove beside it.

“What are we going there for?” The second time I tried to stop, Chen Wuyang’s strength suddenly increased.

The beautiful boy walking in front of me said nothing. An abnormal flush spread across his face, and his breathing was visibly excited.

I couldn’t help feeling scared. The ease brought on by our earlier bickering scattered, replaced by fear of the unknown.

Our surroundings grew darker and darker, yet Chen Wuyang was still pulling me deeper into the grove.

Seizing an opportunity, I wrapped my arms tightly around a tree. “I’m not going! I want to go back!”

Chen Wuyang stopped. The surroundings instantly fell into deathly silence, and his heavy breathing gradually became lighter.

I pressed my face hard against the tree trunk. The rough bark scraped my cheek painfully, but I was even more afraid that I would be eaten in the very next second.

“Chen… Chen Wuyang, evening self-study is about to start. Let’s go back…” I spoke in a trembling voice and couldn’t help choking up.

An icy tentacle slid from my ankle all the way up to my neck. After what felt like half a century, I heard a soft laugh. The next second, a breath of air brushed past my ear.

“Scared?” Chen Wuyang said beside my ear. Whether intentionally or not, his lips lightly touched the shell of it.

His mouth was cold too. I flinched and whispered, “Stop scaring me…”

“Okay, okay. I won’t do it again!” Chen Wuyang lied without the slightest blush and forcibly pried me off the tree. “Are you cosplaying a koala? You were pretty convincing.”

The excitement in his eyes still hadn’t faded. When I lifted my head, I could see it very clearly. He had no intention of hiding it.

Now that I thought about it, it seemed like he had never hidden himself at all. He said whatever he wanted to say.

“You’re so warm…” Chen Wuyang pressed his cheek to mine and narrowed his eyes, like a cat basking in the sun.

But cats didn’t have tentacles, and they definitely didn’t rub those tentacles all over other people’s faces!

I tried to dodge, but he immediately pressed close again. The tentacle around my waist wound tightly around me. It wasn’t strong enough to strangle me to death, but I was almost unable to breathe.

“Jiang He, will you let me eat you?” With his long arms and legs, he almost had my entire body wrapped in his embrace.

I experimentally pushed at him. As expected, he didn’t budge. So I very decisively refused. “No. I’m only seventeen. I still have to go to Peking University!”

“You two over there! What are you doing?” A furious shout rang out. The dean of students appeared in the grove and was sprinting toward us at a speed that surpassed Usain Bolt.

Oh no. We were done for…
