Everything at the get-together that evening was perfectly normal. Everyone offered parting words and wished Song Qiao a smooth journey.

I quietly drank my juice and waited for the grand finale.

At last, she cleared her throat, and everyone fell silent.

I immediately set down my glass and slapped Jian Yu excitedly on the back. “Here it comes, here it comes.”

He said nothing. I noticed the glass he had put down also contained juice.

Oh, I saw you, brat. Calm on the surface, but actually too excited to risk drinking and ruining things, weren’t you?

“I’m about to leave, but I’ll never forget anything here.” Song Qiao began talking about the past. “I transferred here in my second year of high school and had no friends. He was the one who approached me and made me feel less alone. When I differentiated as an Alpha and felt more helpless and lost than ever, he was also the one who helped me and made me stop being afraid.

“I’m not saying this now to pressure him emotionally or make him be with me.

“Before I leave, I only want him to know that he once lit up my life. I want him to know that someone liked him enough to want to become a better person.”

I felt like an old father watching his daughter get married.

She used to be so timid. Now she could say something like this and had the courage to pursue love.

Oh, this was wonderful. I was nearly in tears.

Song Qiao took a deep breath, mustered her courage, and declared loudly, “I want you to know that I like you. I’ve liked you for a very long time, Lin Dong!”

I slapped my thigh in panic. Silly girl, you said the wrong name!

Back when Song Qiao transferred into our class in our second year, it occurred to me belatedly:

Weren’t the male and female leads originally supposed to be deskmates?

Had I cut off my bro’s romantic prospects?

To make up for it, I had no choice but to drag Jian Yu along to see her from time to time so they could grow closer.

Song Qiao always looked so timid that I was afraid of scaring her, and I instinctively spoke to her in a gentle voice.

After we got to know each other, she confessed, “I thought you were being sarcastic to me every day. I was too scared to talk to you.”

Me: “?”

The day she differentiated, I thought she had suddenly come down with some terrible disease.

I was so frightened that I hoisted her onto my back and sprinted, reassuring her that she would be fine while begging her not to fall asleep.

Jian Yu helped pay the bill. When we finally discovered she had only differentiated, I was forced to sit through a crash course on how ABO differentiation worked.

Later, someone asked what my ideal type was. I thought about it, came up blank, and casually offered the broadest answer possible:

“I don’t know. Maybe… someone gentle and kind?”

The person opposite me teased, “Like Song Qiao?”

I immediately stopped him. “Hey, hey, don’t talk nonsense and ruin the girl’s reputation.

“Song Qiao and I aren’t possible.”

A friend’s wife was off-limits!

“Oh, I get it.” Realization dawned on his face. “Is it that you wouldn’t date an Alpha?”

I considered it carefully. That seemed right. If I dated an Alpha, man or woman, wouldn’t I have to be the one on the bottom?

Then I added, “Maybe. It’d be even better if they were a woman.”

Jian Yu sat to one side and listened without saying a word.

The second time I dealt with someone differentiating, I had experience and wasn’t as flustered as before.

Jian Yu, the person actually going through it, was far more panicked.

He lost his usual composure and even hid himself away.

When I found him, he was biting his own wrist, blood streaming from it.

His cheeks were flushed, his eyes misty, and his voice choked with tears.

“Don’t let it be Alpha. Not Alpha…”

He was pleading, begging not to differentiate as an Alpha.

Only then did it occur to me: if Jian Yu became an Alpha, how could he be with Song Qiao?

Unfortunately, Jian Yu still became an Alpha in the end.

I didn’t see the problem. Two Alphas together? That was hot.

My own differentiation was long overdue. It wasn’t until a physical examination that I was finally confirmed to be a Beta.

Some people found it hard to believe I was merely an ordinary Beta.

I silently studied the examination report. Song Qiao and Jian Yu seemed about to comfort me, but I cut them off before either could speak.

“Ugh, ‘Beta male’ sounds pathetic.”

Jian Yu paused, then smiled helplessly. “No one says it that way.”

I accepted the result easily. If anything, it was the ideal outcome for me.

The three of us were almost always together after that. I had waited so long for this day, when I could finally see the two of them achieve a happy ending.

So why had Song Qiao said my name?
