I’d been in Bincheng for a month, but the mission hadn’t made much progress.

Jiang Jibai was impervious to everything. Neither kindness nor force worked on him.

He treated me like I was invisible.

Every day, he came halfway through class and left the moment school ended.

No friends. No family.

Sometimes he showed up with injuries on his face.

The fighting and bullying in class never stopped.

Shithead Chen might be gone, but there was always some Dogshit Liu to take his place.

An environment erodes you slowly and imperceptibly. Stay somewhere like this long enough, and it warps you.

Even the system had taken a dark turn.

【Host, why don’t you order his services at the bar?】

I thought that sounded like a plan.

The streetlights in the back alleys behind the bars along Bincheng’s riverfront were broken too.

Only cheap neon lights flickered, casting ghostly shadows.

I pushed through the crowd of bodies writhing like demons.

When I looked up, I saw a little white rabbit surrounded by layer upon layer of wolves.

No—a big white rabbit.

He stood tall and straight above everyone else in the group.

Broad shoulders, narrow waist. His black T-shirt revealed the lean, powerful lines of his muscles.

Several men had him pinned against the wall.

“You ungrateful little bastard. Brother Li taking a fancy to you is an honor, got it? If you know what’s good for you, you’ll come with us right now.”

Jiang Jibai didn’t resist. His voice carried that same taunting note that begged for a beating.

“Then tell him to come kneel and beg me himself.”

“Doesn’t he like me? Let him kneel down and call for me a couple of times. Then I’ll think about whether I want to fuck him.”

The men were instantly enraged.

“Fucking son of a mistress still thinks he’s too good for us. Let’s show him a good time first…!”

The system screamed, 【Host, they’re going to rape him!】

The sound of a belt being unbuckled made my head buzz.

As if my body no longer belonged to me, I charged over and drove my fist into the man’s face.

I couldn’t hear the terrified screams erupting around us.

The feel of my fist striking flesh, the dull thud of bone on bone, the sharp reek of blood…

They were a fuse, igniting something I’d suppressed for a long time.

My awareness began to narrow and recede.

Every sound around me blurred until all that remained was the pounding of my heartbeat.

【Watch out, Host! They have knives!】

My breath caught. A hand suddenly clamped around my wrist.

“Stop fighting. Run!”

“Fuck, why are you dragging me…!”

Jiang Jibai knew the area well. He pulled me through one turn after another.

He ducked into a dark dead-end alley and shoved me firmly inside.

The push pissed me off. “You—mmph!”

He covered my mouth and turned his head to peer outside.

“Don’t breathe.”

Fuck!

I’d die if I didn’t breathe!

“Check over there! Don’t let either of them get away! Hurry!”

Our ragged breathing echoed back and forth through the alley.

The curses and footsteps gradually faded into the distance.

Once he was sure there wasn’t a sound left, he released me.

Frowning, he wiped his hand on my clothes.

The fuck?

I shoved him away, so angry I laughed.

“I haven’t even complained about your hand reeking of alcohol. You’ve got the nerve to be disgusted with me?”

He stared at me coldly.

“Who told you to charge in like a rabid dog, biting everyone you saw?”

“I saved you. Is that any way to treat your lifesaving benefactor?”

“Did I ask you to save me?”

“Fuck, are you asking for a beating? Say that one more time.”

“Rabid dog. What about it?”

In the pitch-black alley, all I could see were his eyes.

Cold and brooding, darker than the night itself.

The wind howled through, followed by another stray cat’s cry.

One of us broke first—I couldn’t tell who—letting out a muffled laugh and looking away.

“Fuck.”

“Goddammit.”

The absurdity of our narrow escape drifted softly through the far end of the alley.

The rage from the bar ebbed away.

My limbs felt a little weak.

I slid down the wall to sit on the ground and looked up at him.

“Hey, were you behind what happened to Chen Dazhi?”

He raised a brow. “Wasn’t his name Chen Zhiqiang?”

“Who cares what his name is? So it was you.”

“Was it that obvious?”

“Duh. You’re the only person whose handwriting is that pretty.”

He lowered his eyes to me. “Why are you so good at fighting?”

I arched a brow with great swagger. “I’m a professional thug.”

He scoffed. “You’re just a punk. Why are you so proud of it?”

I wasn’t pleased. “What, top student? You look down on dropouts?”

“Why did you drop out?”

“…”

【Host, this is a perfect opportunity to grow closer to the male lead!】

Jiang Jibai’s gaze felt almost tangible as it dropped to my faintly trembling right hand.

I dug my nails into my palm and hid the hand behind my back.

I was grateful the streetlights were broken. He couldn’t see the even more wretched expression on my face.

I drew out my words with feigned carelessness. “The usual reasons.”

He stopped asking.

The alley fell silent again.

Unable to stand the awkward atmosphere, I got to my feet.

“I’m leaving. You should hurry home too.”

“Hey, Yue Zhou.” He caught my hand.

“Come back to my place and put some medicine on those injuries.”
