Chapter 29

The students surrounded Qin Xian at once, chattering like a flock of chicks as they all rushed to ask questions at the same time.

Qin Xian was utterly helpless. For the first time, he fully understood the suffering of being a teacher.

He raised a finger to his lips, shushed them, then pointed outside the door.

“If you don’t want to draw more monsters up here, keep it down.”

The students of City No.1 High School were generally well disciplined, and at that, they immediately lowered their voices.

“Okay, okay… Mr. Qin, you’re so handsome. Do you have a girlfriend?”

Qin Xian: “…”

Had these students only been locked up for two or three days, so their true natures hadn’t been suppressed yet?

Fortunately, a classmate beside her lightly smacked her. “Are you here to be funny? Is this really the time for that?”

Qin Xian breathed a sigh of relief and asked, “Can you tell me what happened to you over the past three days?”

The classroom immediately filled with quiet chatter. Qin Xian couldn’t make out a thing, but a girl seated slightly toward the back was earnestly raising her right hand, waiting for Qin Xian to call on her.

Qin Xian immediately reached a hand toward her. “All right, this student, please tell me. Everyone else, quiet.”

The girl stood at once, her back perfectly straight, her high ponytail falling behind her head.

In clear, fluent language, she organized the sequence of events concisely from start to finish.

“Three nights ago, after we finished washing up and came back for evening self-study, we noticed strange people had entered the school. At first, we didn’t pay much attention. Someone went to report it to the teachers, and the rest of us just went on studying. But halfway through evening self-study, no teacher had come into the classroom. Our discipline is usually pretty good, so no one thought it was too strange. Not until the broadcast told everyone to gather on the field. We went there completely confused, and then we saw a group of strange masked people announce that they had taken control of the school and that we had to behave.”

“At first, we thought it was a terrorist attack. Some students even went up to argue and resist, but one of them, a monster dressed like a security guard, immediately broke a student’s arm.”

She frowned, as if simply recalling it pained her.

“That monster could even spit out tentacles… We’d never seen anything like it before. It was terrifying.”

As she spoke, she wiped at her face, a little on the verge of breaking down.

Qin Xian’s voice was much gentler than usual. “If it’s too hard, rest for a bit first.”

“No.” The girl’s expression quickly steadied after she took a deep breath. “Then they announced a lot of ridiculous rules. For example, they changed our curriculum and demanded that we complete study tasks according to the new schedule. For example, that… opposite-sex interaction class… They demanded that within three days, we had to have… have sexual relations with someone of the opposite sex.”

As soon as she said that, many students below made gagging faces. Others quietly cursed under their breath.

The girl’s clenched fists were trembling. “Also, they ordered us to burn our own textbooks, to denounce all that knowledge as garbage… They ordered us to destroy school property. At that point, some teachers rushed over from their dorms and charged at them. But those monsters… immediately tortured two teachers right in front of us until they were barely alive. He demanded that the teachers join them, and most of the teachers objected right away. After beating those teachers, they took them away. Our homeroom teacher too, and still hasn’t shown up.”

Tears welled in the girl’s eyes. Everyone else’s eyes were red too, and the atmosphere in the classroom grew unbearably oppressive.

The girl continued, her voice choked with tears. “And… and some students actually joined them on their own. Those monsters said that anyone who joined them could replace the teachers and school leaders, could order other people around however they wanted, even teachers, and could wreck the campus however they liked.”

“Of course… that was only a very small number of people.” Hatred appeared in the girl’s eyes. Compared with the monsters, she clearly hated those traitors even more.

“Damn it, Zhou Fantu from our class joined them. This morning, he even came over to teach us ‘the art of internet language’… which was really just online insults and violent language. If we didn’t listen, he’d whip us, and we’d have to run twenty laps.”

“The one from the class next door wouldn’t even let us eat or drink. How can someone be that disgusting? Is he even human?!”

The girl wiped away the tears at the corners of her eyes, bit her lip, clenched her fists, and asked, “Mr. Qin, what exactly are we dealing with right now? These things… aren’t scientific at all. Are there really monsters in our world?”

“I’ll explain it to you roughly. Keep quiet.”

The surrounding students immediately focused all their attention and held their breath. Even the students from the other classes in the hallway squeezed into the classroom, but everyone stayed very quiet.

Qin Xian’s voice was calm and gentle. “You can understand it this way: monsters from another world have invaded. They are born from humanity’s negative emotions, and they also feed on humanity’s negative emotions. A school is a pretty good place for them. They want to drive you into despair so you’ll become their food or their accomplices.”

“Th-then… what do we do?”

“The police have already surrounded this place, and some brave officers have already entered the school. You could say I’m one of them. The monsters here will definitely be defeated, but if you’re willing to pull yourselves together, this nightmare will end faster.”

“How? As long as I can leave here and go home sooner, I’ll do anything!”

“Don’t be afraid. Don’t believe them. Keep your thoughts positive. The monsters would rather use you, so they won’t kill you easily. But you still have to pretend to obey them in front of them and protect yourselves. If you can, spread what I said to more students without being discovered. You don’t need to do anything else. Try your best not to come into conflict with the enemy. Please remember to protect yourselves. That will be a great help to us.”
The students looked at one another, and much of the anxiety and the despair that had just begun to surface was pressed back down.

The girl who had raised her hand earlier was the first to answer. “All right. We understand. We’ll stay true to ourselves, trust the police, and believe that we can make it out alive!”

One look at her and it was obvious she was one of the top students in class. Not only was she emotionally steady, she was also incredibly proactive, still carrying that unique teenage fervor.

“What’s your name?” Qin Xian asked.

The girl answered, “Teacher Qin, my name is Xu Zimo!”

Qin Xian reached out and patted her on the shoulder. “Keep it up. You’ve got this.”

Xu Zimo nodded hard. Her eyes, which had been red-rimmed moments ago, had already returned to normal, and her large eyes shone brightly.

“Hey! What are you doing!? Running off to another class is against the rules! All of Class 2211, go run fifteen laps on the field!”

A shout of reprimand came from the doorway. The students of Class 2211 turned and saw who had arrived, and expressions of loathing appeared on their faces.

Qin Xian looked over as well. Four people who were clearly students stood at the door. But they were not wearing school uniforms, and some were dressed in outrageously flashy clothes-ripped jeans, earrings, dyed hair.

“And you are?” Qin Xian asked.

A short, chubby boy planted his hands on his hips and answered, “Us? We’re from the Student Council! You broke the rules, so I have the right to punish you!”

Qin Xian smiled. “Student Council? You don’t really look the part.”

These kids were probably the students Xu Zimo and the others had mentioned-the ones who had sided with the enemy.

From the looks of it, most of them were problem students who had seized this chance to get a taste of power and were now bullying their own classmates in return. Judging by their condition, they had not been completely corrupted and led astray by the Domain yet, and their methods of punishment were still relatively petty.

Qin Xian said to them, “I was the one who called the students of Class 2211 over. Their teacher and I are cooperating on a combined class lesson. That shouldn’t be a problem, right?”

As he spoke, he pointed at the fat pig of a man who was still lying unconscious on the floor.

The little boy from the Student Council was startled and blurted out, “What kind of class were you teaching!? Why are you hitting people!?”

Qin Xian asked, “Aren’t I a violent teacher? What’s wrong with that?”

“Vio-violent…” The boy froze up.

Suddenly, a hand reached out from the side and shoved the short, chubby boy backward. A tall figure stepped forward.

Qin Xian immediately frowned and studied him closely.

He looked like a boy of around eighteen, and he was indeed good-looking, but there was an evil air to his features that made him seem anything but obedient. His black hair was cut in messy layers, and a red earring gleamed at his ear. Although he appeared to be around the same age as the other students, Qin Xian felt a deep sense of discordance from him.

Not only that, the boy curled one corner of his mouth into a thoroughly unpleasant smile. His black pupils stared fixedly at Qin Xian, as if they were trying to cling to him, making Qin Xian feel vaguely sick.

The other Student Council members beside him seemed both respectful and afraid of him. The boy who had been shoved aside not only had no complaints, he even bowed deferentially and retreated two steps.

Qin Xian took the initiative and asked, “And who might you be?”

“Me? I’m the Student Council President.” His tone was frivolous, not at all like someone capable of bearing such an important role.

Qin Xian chuckled. “You look more like the type who gets caught by the Student Council President for breaking rules all the time.”

“Shut up! You’re not allowed to talk about our president like that!” A member beside him immediately pointed at Qin Xian’s nose and started cursing. “Our president has way more authority than a little teacher like you!”

“Oh.” Qin Xian spread his hands with a completely unconcerned expression. “So, since I was the one who asked for a combined class, they naturally didn’t break any rules, right?”

“Sorry, Teacher Qin, but you still broke the rules,” the president said first.

“If you want to conduct a combined class, you need to report it to the school in advance. Did you? If not, your punishment is the same as the students’. You need to go downstairs with them and run fifteen laps.”

As he spoke, he walked straight toward Qin Xian. Only when he came up close did Qin Xian realize this eighteen-year-old boy was very tall, almost as tall as him.

The president leaned forward until he was practically touching the tip of Qin Xian’s nose, then said in a flippant tone, “But I really like you. So this time, I won’t punish you or the students. But you have to come with me.”

As he spoke, he reached out a finger, intending to hook Qin Xian’s collar.

Qin Xian slapped the back of his hand away. The skin there visibly reddened.

The president held the back of his throbbing hand and smiled. “Teacher is so fierce. You actually hit a student. Aren’t you afraid I’ll report you to the education bureau?”

“What do you think I teach? Come any closer, and the next thing I hit will be your face.” Qin Xian raised his fist.

The president took two steps back and asked, “So, will you all go run fifteen laps, or will you come with me? Choose one.”

Qin Xian gave a cold snort. He was curious to see what this guy was trying to pull. He answered at once, “Fine. I’ll go with you.”

“Teacher!” A student in the class immediately stood up, but Qin Xian raised a hand to stop them. His calm gaze swept over the entire classroom. Though he said nothing, that look seemed like magic, quieting the students down.

“I’ll be back in a bit.” With that, he followed the Student Council President out of the classroom.

The moment he stepped out the door, the end-of-class bell rang twice before it was abruptly cut off. A cold, sinister voice sounded over the broadcast. “Hello, students. The long recess activity has begun. This long recess activity will be a deadly battle royale. The school will send out four monsters to hunt you down, so please enjoy the fun of recess!”
