Chapter 3

I suddenly remembered what it was like when we first met.

Back then, I had just transmigrated. The original owner of this body was the sect’s youngest junior sister, pampered since childhood. When it came to the disciple she had taken in, she treated him like a lowly servant, offering nothing but beatings and verbal abuse.

Our first confrontation happened when he came to serve me tea.

Just as I took the teacup, the System’s voice broadcasted in my mind:

[Host, please complete the task: Humiliate the Male Lead.]

Heaven is my witness, I’ve been a kind person my whole life. The most outrageous thing I’d ever done was complain about my counselor behind their back.

Now, to save my life, I had no choice but to bite the bullet and follow the task, maintaining my persona as a spoiled brat.

So, I abruptly raised my hand and slammed the teacup onto the ground.

Since it was my first time throwing a cup, I wasn’t very practiced. The cup didn’t even break; it just clattered and rolled over to Xie Zhuo’s feet.

I froze for a split second before continuing with a sharp, biting tone:

“Can’t you even brew tea properly? It’s scalding!”

Xie Zhuo seemed long accustomed to this. He knelt submissively, his eyes devoid of any emotion, like a puppet without a temper.

“This disciple admits his fault. Please punish me, Master.”

I thought I had completed the task, but the System repeated itself:

[Host, please complete the task: Humiliate the Male Lead.]

Huh? That didn’t count? Was it because I didn’t scold him harshly enough?

I looked at my disciple kneeling obediently on the ground and pondered for two seconds.

Unfortunately, my vocabulary for insults was limited. I really couldn’t find any other reason.

In the end, I could only puff myself up and shout with all the bravado I could muster:

“Xie Zhuo, you’re so stupid!”

And so, for the next ten years, I forced myself to be sarcastic, mocking, and bossy toward the Male Lead. Every day, I had to rack my brain for ways to pick a fight or find an excuse to lash out.

Unfortunately, what goes around comes around.

Now, the time for my retribution had finally arrived.

Even though I acted like I had given up, the truth was I wasn’t mentally prepared to face Xie Zhuo yet.

To avoid being found by him, I hid in the nearby mountains.

Even encountering a wild beast would be better than running into Xie Zhuo right now.

I struggled to run deeper into the mountains. As long as I hid deep enough, he wouldn’t be able to find me.

I stumbled along, pushing through layers of branches. Even when my arms were scratched, I didn’t cry out, focused entirely on finding the perfect hiding spot.

Without my spiritual power, my sensory perception had dulled significantly. Just as I was about to push aside another thicket, I suddenly realized something was wrong.

There was a scent of blood in the air.

Out of caution, I didn’t dare move another inch, carefully crouching behind the bushes.

However, the smell of blood grew thicker. Just as I was debating whether I could slip away quietly without being noticed, an indifferent voice drifted over.

“Where is the Soul-Returning Lamp?”

The voice was strange yet carried a hint of familiarity.

My heart began to race as a terrible suspicion entered my mind.

It couldn’t be such a coincidence, could it?

Forcing myself to stay calm, I used my trembling hands to part the bushes slightly and peeked out.

What met my eyes was a scene of pure crimson.

Several people were already lying on the ground. A figure in black was suspended in mid-air, entangled in Demonic Qi. He was bleeding profusely, his eyes wide with terror.

Even though I lacked spiritual power, I could tell these people were quite formidable. Yet here they were, collapsed miserably in pools of blood, some having already stopped breathing.

Not far away, a man in black robes leaned against a tree, leisurely wiping a short blade in his hand.

…It was the very one I had given him.

What a disaster.

What did the Xie Zhuo of five hundred years later look like?

His hair was pulled high into a black crown. His jawline was sharp, and his lips were pale.

He was shrouded in a deathly black mist of Demonic Qi. His eyes held nothing but indifference and emptiness; when he stared at someone without expression, it was like he was looking at a corpse.

With a final scream, the last man in black fell silent.

I suddenly remembered a detail from the book: every month during the full moon, the Demonic Qi within members of the Demon Clan would surge violently. Some would even resort to slaughter to vent the pressure.

And today just happened to be the middle of the month.

No one told me the blackened Male Lead would be this terrifying!

Besides, I had zero spiritual power right now. I didn’t stand a chance of resisting!

Driven by pure instinct, only one word filled my mind:

Run!

I tried to be as silent as possible as I turned and bolted.

To my surprise, there was no movement behind me for a long time.

Just when I thought I had successfully escaped, a sudden chill crept up my back, like being stared down by a cold, venomous snake. It slithered inch by inch up my spine.

In the next second, a blood-stained short blade pressed against the back of my neck. He looked like someone who had completely lost himself to the bloodlust.

“There’s one more that slipped through the net.”

I froze on the spot, scared out of my wits.

The tip of the blade slid slowly from the back of my neck to my chin, gently tilting it upward.

He tilted his head slightly, scanning my profile, and suddenly let out a laugh.

“The person they sent this time actually looks quite a bit like her.”

Unfortunately, I didn’t have the energy to figure out what he meant. My mind was entirely consumed with how to stay alive.

I closed my eyes. Since things had come to this, I might as well make one last struggle.

The blade was pressed against my fragile throat; it felt as though the slightest pressure could pierce right through.

I stood my ground and firmly called out his name, just as I used to when I was angry with him:

“Xie Zhuo!”

“This blade is filthy! Move it away this instant!”

“Are you trying to rebel against your Master?”

The terrifying pressure behind me suddenly hitched. The swirling black mist around us seemed to freeze.

Even the howling mountain wind died down. I don’t know how much time passed.

My nerves were stretched to the breaking point, every fiber of my being on high alert.

If the bluff failed, I’d have to find any way possible to run.

“Clang-”

The short blade dropped to the ground.

Immediately after, a pair of arms wrapped tightly around my waist. Xie Zhuo had grown so much taller; I was almost entirely enveloped in his embrace.

This Demon Lord, who had nearly caused the world to collapse, now buried his face in the crook of my neck. His voice trembled:

“Master… this disciple was wrong.”

“Master… could you act spoiled with me again…?”
