Chapter 1

The private room flickered with shifting lights.

A handsome, fresh-faced young man poured me a drink. “Miss, should I fill it all the way?”

When he spoke, adorable dimples appeared at the corners of his mouth, revealing a lovely Adam’s apple and the tantalizing glimpse beneath the collar of his uniform.

“Fill it.”

My friend An Zhenzhu pushed the door open and walked in.

Seeing how practiced I was, she was shocked. “You even brought a college boy out with you? Aren’t you afraid the one at home will get jealous?”

I wrapped an arm around the young man in my arms and shook my head with a smile.

“Xu Lian is basically a machine running on a preset program.”

“I chased him for seven years and still couldn’t warm his heart. Don’t worry. He doesn’t care about me.”

An Zhenzhu asked, “Then why did he marry you?”

“This family marriage took advantage of him when he was down, but now I’m getting tired of it too…”

Before long, the rest of our college classmates arrived one after another.

We drank and played games together, and the atmosphere quickly heated up.

“Whoever draws the heart has to kiss the little puppy boy beside them.”

I was the one holding the card, and everyone pushed me forward.

They all began chanting, “Kiss him! Kiss him!”

Helpless, I had no choice but to go along with it.

After several rounds of drinking, my half sister, Song Xingxing, made a joke laced with mockery.

“Back then, you were so desperate for Xu Lian, Sis. On a big day like a class reunion, why isn’t he here with you? Don’t tell me you’ve been married for two years and still sleep in separate beds?”

My expression stiffened.

Then I tightened my arm around the young man in my arms and smiled as if I couldn’t care less.

“A dried-up old husband past his prime? Cheap and nauseating. Having him here would only kill the mood.”

“Besides, nothing beats dumplings for eating, and nothing beats young men for fun. This place is full of diamond-grade college boys. How could he possibly compare?”

In upper-class circles, keeping pretty boys was nothing unusual.

Everyone burst into laughter when they heard that.

But just then, the door was pushed open, and the laughter came to an abrupt stop.

Someone gasped, “Xu Lian?”

I looked up. Through my blurred vision, I saw a familiar figure in a suit-cold, restrained.

Perhaps I was mistaken, but the corners of his eyes seemed tinged red.

Xu Lian walked in.

With impeccable manners, he explained to everyone, “Sorry I’m a little late. I was supposed to come with Xiao Li, but I had some documents I hadn’t finished handling…”

He pulled the young man away and naturally slipped an arm around my waist, holding me close in an intimate manner.

Song Xingxing’s expression turned ugly.

I wasn’t used to it. Frowning, I tried to pry his hand away.

His body clearly stiffened, but he only tightened his grip. Unlike usual, he wasn’t measured or restrained at all.

After the gathering ended, I stepped into the cold wind and returned to the car.

By then, I was completely sober.

Calmly, I asked, “You heard all that, didn’t you?”

The color drained from Xu Lian’s face, and a flash of hurt crossed his eyes.

He forced the corners of his mouth up and shook his head in denial. “Heard what? Did you say something… I didn’t hear anything.”

I pinched the bridge of my nose.

For some reason, irritation welled up inside me.

“It’s fine. It was going to happen sooner or later anyway. Let’s lay it all out today.”

Xu Lian suddenly cut in, “No. I don’t want to hear it!”

The moment the words left his mouth, he seemed to realize his reaction had been too intense.

Softening his tone, he said with pale, restrained forbearance, “I’m too tired today… Another day. Whatever you want to say, let’s talk another day, all right?”

I turned my head and looked out at the endless stream of traffic beyond the window.

I did not answer him.

The air around us was frighteningly quiet.

After the car had driven for a long time, I suddenly spoke, breaking the silence.

“Let’s end this marriage.”
