Chapter 2

I had liked Xu Lian since I was nineteen. It had been nine years now.

Back in my freshman year.

To humiliate me for getting into the same university as her, Song Xingxing exposed the fact that I was an illegitimate daughter.

She spread it all over campus.

“Liu, that Jiang Li you used to chase is actually Song Susu’s half-sister. Same father, different mother. She’s a proper rich heiress!”

Liu Chen was smoking as he cursed, “She’s just some illegitimate brat who grew up in an orphanage. What kind of heiress is she? I was doing her a favor by chasing her, and she still dared to reject me!”

I charged over, grabbed him by the hair, and slammed him against the wall.

Hard.

“Are you some kind of coelenterate with a mouth but no anus? Every word out of you is as filthy as excrement.”

Then I ground the lit cigarette butt into his cheek.

“Ah!”

That day, Xu Lian was on duty with the Discipline Inspection Department.

Hearing the scream, he pulled me away and swept an icy gaze over me. “How could you resort to violence?”

But the moment I saw his face, I froze.

He looked exactly like the gentle older brother from the orphanage in my memories…

From then on, I began paying attention to Xu Lian.

I learned that he was two years above me, a top student in the finance department, the Young Master of Jiang City. He had grown up with every advantage, and his personality was aloof and hard to approach…

I felt a little disappointed.

But even knowing he wasn’t the person in my heart, I still couldn’t help moving closer to him.

Even if it was only to catch one glimpse.

Because of that, even though I majored in jewelry design, I read a lot of finance books and engineered one chance encounter after another.

I didn’t know who took a photo of me gazing at his back.

They posted it on the campus confession wall.

[The homewrecker’s daughter is so shameless. I’ve seen her several times, always staring at our finance department’s genius with those filthy eyes. What a disgusting simp! (Posting anonymously)]

After that, everyone started calling me “Jiang the Simp.”

Song Xingxing sneered, “Jiang Li, where did you get the nerve to covet Xu Lian? He’s the Young Master of Jiang City. Go take a piss and look at your reflection. See if you’re worthy!”

She liked Xu Lian.

She couldn’t stand someone of my level liking the same thing she did.

I didn’t care what anyone said. I only did what I wanted to do.

To me, Xu Lian was… an irresistible temptation.

Since the whole school already knew how I felt, I might as well pursue him openly.

So while studying design, I minored in finance and joined their class for professional courses.

Because I performed well, the professor kept me on for a project.

At last, I had a real chance to interact with him.

Xu Lian clearly avoided me.

After I confronted him and asked directly, he set a deliberately difficult condition.

“I’m very picky. If you want to pursue me, you need to deliver a cup of hand-ground coffee from Heaven on Earth to me every morning at seven forty-five sharp. Forty degrees Celsius, no sugar. Keep it up for three months, and then we’ll talk about anything else.”

I knew he was trying to shake me off.

Jiang University was in the east of the city, while Heaven on Earth was in the west. A round trip took three and a half hours.

In other words, I had to wake up at four every morning.

A normal person wouldn’t last. Any fleeting infatuation would have worn away long before then.

But I persisted for three months.

On the last day, I delivered the coffee into his hands. Panting from the run, I smiled and asked, “Can we talk about anything else now?”

His expression was stunned.

From that day on, I began pursuing him passionately.

I brought him breakfast before class, water when he played basketball, roses on holidays, and gifts I saved up for on his birthday…

Song Xingxing went to Xu Lian several times, wiping away tears in grief. “I’m sorry. My sister has caused you trouble. I apologize on her behalf.”

Xu Lian was cold to me, but he ignored her even more completely.

So she vented all her anger on me.

At first, she hired someone to frame me for stealing her design draft. I saw through it, and she lost her eligibility to enter the jewelry competition.

Later, she incited other people to surround me, but I used the techniques my older brother had taught me and beat them all until they were crippled.

When she saw those methods wouldn’t work, she drugged me before I left campus for a break and found someone to ruin my reputation.

I realized something was wrong and collapsed in an empty equipment room. In my dizziness, the number I pressed never dialed out.

When Xu Lian arrived,

I was already huddled in the corner, barely conscious.

“Jiang Li? What are you doing here?”

I clung to him tightly and begged through tears, “I want you…”

He pinched my chin until it reddened, his expression icy, even tinged with hatred.

“Jiang Li, you look so cheap, wagging your tail and begging like this.”

I carefully kissed him.

“Please. I really like you…”

His Adam’s apple bobbed.

Unable to endure it any longer, he pinned me down in the equipment room and kissed me until I cried.

My mind was a haze then. I only knew how to demand more. I didn’t remember how, that day, he had questioned me with reddened eyes, jealous and bitter.

“You think I don’t know anything, don’t you?”

“For the sake of this face of mine, you can go this far… Just how much do you like that person?”

“Using me as someone else’s counterfeit… I hate you…”

After that,

our vague relationship continued for seven years.

It wasn’t until two years ago, when the Xu Family was exposed for engaging in illegal dealings that disregarded human life and fell from its pedestal overnight, that I finally confirmed my relationship with him.

To be precise, I took advantage of his crisis.

Before Xu Lian’s father went to prison, he killed himself to escape punishment. In the chaos, Xu Lian took over the Xu Family business.

I asked my father to arrange a marriage alliance with Xu Lian.

For the sake of the profits I had brought the company over the years, my father reluctantly agreed to my request.

But Xu Lian couldn’t accept it.

“Are you really that desperate? You have to force a marriage alliance? Do you know I’ve always been preparing to-”

I cut him off.

“Right now, you don’t have a choice. Marrying me is the best way to protect Xu Corporation.”

I didn’t care whether he liked me or whether he was willing to marry me.

Whatever I wanted, I would get.

After the wedding,

we weren’t close. We were only an upper-class couple who appeared harmonious while living separate lives in spirit.

Even in our most intimate moments, Xu Lian resisted looking into my eyes.

“Xiao Li, I don’t like having the lights on.”

“Don’t look at me.”

Later, he became more and more like the older brother in my memories.

Every day, he made delicious meals, thoughtfully smoothed my hair, and pulled my trench coat tighter around me. Every movement was so similar…

Yet I felt only strangeness and discomfort.

As if he were pretending to be gentle.

So fake.

So ugly.

Gradually, I grew tired of it. Sick of it.
