Chapter 3

The car slammed to a sudden stop.

My body lurched forward. If not for the seat belt, I would have hit my head.

I frowned at him. “Are you insane?”

The man gripped the steering wheel, his lowered lashes casting a shadow over his eyes. His lower eyelids were wet and red, as if he were desperately holding something back.

He asked, word by word, “Xiao Li, what did you just… say?”

We had already reached the villa.

I opened the car door and slammed it shut. “I said let’s end this marriage. I’m tired of it.”

He chased me upstairs.

Grabbing my wrist, he pinned me against the carved stair railing, his voice trembling. “I don’t agree! It’s only been two years… and you already think it’s boring? You’re already… tired of me?”

My back was suspended over empty space.

My heart pounded wildly from his madness.

But my words came out ice-cold and calm.

“It was wrong of me to force you into this marriage alliance back then, but you got the Song Family’s funding too. You came out ahead no matter how you look at it.”

“Now that Xu Corporation is steadily rising, ending this alliance won’t be a loss for you-”

He cut me off, eyes bloodshot.

He was almost out of his mind. “Why? Why do you get to decide every single time? You said you wanted to pursue me… you said you wanted a marriage alliance… now you say you want a divorce… Jiang Li, what am I to you?”

I stared at him in silence.

“Fine. Then we’ll tell everyone you got tired of me.”

A flash of hurt surfaced in his eyes. As if drained of all strength, he released my wrist and forced a smile, clinging to the last of his dignity.

“Xiao Li… anything but divorce. I’ll agree to anything but that.”

I found him difficult to deal with, so I turned and left.

“If you can accept a marriage like this, then do whatever you want.”

“From now on, when I attend parties, don’t show up uninvited. It’s off-putting.”

After a long time, a hoarse reply came from behind me. “Okay.”

In the middle of the night.

I woke up thirsty and got up for water, then heard the faint sound of crying.

Whose cat was wailing like its heart had been ripped out?

I didn’t think much of it.

I rolled over and went back to sleep.

Xu Lian returned to the bedroom with red-rimmed eyes and saw my phone screen lighting up over and over on the nightstand.

A contact saved as “186 cm / pale / big pecs / pretty college boy” had sent a flood of messages:

[Miss, your husband saw us today. Will he get mad?]

[You said you liked waist chains, so I put one on. It’s so cold… I miss you, Miss. I can’t sleep. (Video)]

With trembling fingers, he tapped open the video.

He saw the young man from today’s private room wearing nothing but a waist chain, preening and showing off his abs and V-line.

That cheap thing was using his young body to seduce Xu Lian’s wife, making her waver.

And Xu Lian was no longer new.

She was tired of him… even disgusted by him.

The messages kept coming: [Can I see you tomorrow night, Miss?]

Xu Lian was nearly driven mad with jealousy.

The next evening.

I took my keys and left, ready to go to my appointment.

When I looked up, I saw Xu Lian coming out of the kitchen.

There was hope in his beautiful eyes, but his tone was pained and pale. “Xiao Li, I made your favorite dessert… Could you not go out tonight?”

“No. I already promised someone dinner. Eat it yourself.”

I politely said goodbye to him.

I didn’t see his increasingly repressed expression, or the hand hanging at his side, trembling.

“Dinner… is that right…”
