Chapter 2

I did not sleep well.

It felt as if something had been kneading my lips.

When I woke the next morning,

my lips were red and swollen.

Could this be retribution for lying last night?

The bed beside me was empty.

Wei Liao usually rose at the hour of the ox.

When we had first married, I had wanted to get up and help him dress.

I had left the Shen family in such a hurry that the matrons had not had time to teach me anything about matters between husband and wife.

But I was not stupid. I knew that as a wife, I ought to rise earlier than my husband.

Unfortunately, I simply could not get up.

Several times, by the time I finally struggled out of bed, Wei Liao had already finished his morning training.

Feeling guilty, I would go over and hand him a sweat towel.

Sweat would roll down his broad, rounded honey-colored pectorals and over his eight slabs of abdominal muscle.

His arm was as thick as my waist.

I lowered my head, not daring to look up.

I thought I heard Wei Liao laugh.

He must have been mocking me for being unworthy as a wife.

Alas.

Since he had long since despised me, why had he not divorced me sooner?

Then I would not have to petition to be Cast Off now.

I had just gotten up when Shen Zhaozhao’s maid arrived. She asked me whether the matter had been settled.

I said, “It was too late last night. I will mention it to the general today.”

The maid glared at me. “If you still don’t bring it up today, don’t blame our young lady for being ruthless.”

“Don’t forget. Your mother is still working at the Minister’s Manor. Whether her days are easy or hard is all decided by a single word from our young lady!”

I hurriedly nodded.

Back then,

Shen Zhaozhao and I had been switched in our swaddling clothes by one of the minister’s concubines. It had nothing to do with my birth mother.

She had merely happened to give birth on the same day as Madam Minister.

After the Minister’s Manor acknowledged Shen Zhaozhao and took her back, they also brought my mother to the Minister’s Manor.

It was not out of kindness. They wanted to keep her right under their noses, where she could be used to control me.

Wei Liao and I had no real feelings between us, but she was, after all, my birth mother.

That was why I had agreed to Shen Zhaozhao’s demand.

After seeing Shen Zhaozhao’s maid off, I turned around and saw Wei Liao.

He was bare-chested, his messy hair tied into a loose ponytail, looking as if he had just finished his morning drills.

He had washed with cold water, and a fresh, clean scent clung to him.

His honey-colored skin seemed to glow in the sunlight.

His gaze fell on me. “Why aren’t you wearing more?”

Spring had only just begun, and the weather was still a little chilly. I had come out in a hurry and was only wearing a single layer.

Obediently, I said, “I’ll go put on another layer right now.”

No sooner had I spoken than Wei Liao draped the outer robe in his hands directly over my shoulders.

His clothes were far too large for me and swallowed me whole.

My face and nose were filled with his scent.

I was like prey wrapped inside the pelt of a wild beast.

I poked my head out from the robe and nearly bumped into the red buds on Wei Liao’s chest.

At some point, he had come extremely close to me.

Looking at those flushed pectorals right after his workout, my lips and teeth began to itch. I actually felt the urge to bite him.

I thought of my former fiancé, His Highness the Seventh Prince.

He was an extraordinarily handsome man, cold and noble.

He was the dream of countless sheltered young ladies.

He had once been mine as well.

Although he would accept letters and gifts from every woman, that was only because he feared hurting their feelings.

He was gentle to everyone, but I was special to him.

He was completely different from my current husband.

And yet, looking at the man before me, an unbearable itch stirred in my heart.

I wanted to make him my mount, my bed.

He would surely be soft and warm.

I once had a little horse of my own, and I was always very gentle with it.

But when it refused to obey, I had no choice but to strike it twice with the riding crop.

If that riding crop were to land on Wei Liao…

Lost in thought, my breath spilled over the chest of the man before me.

I did not notice that Wei Liao’s breathing was growing faster and faster.

His body was even trembling slightly, as if he were forcing himself to endure something.

[Why did they suddenly shove an appetizer into my mouth?]

[Do they dare pan the camera a little lower?!]

[It’s fine, this can whet the appetite first. The heroine will definitely petition to be Cast Off today. Sisters, just wait!]

The words snapped me back to my senses.

Right.

This could not be delayed.

Whether I stretched out my neck or shrank it back, the blade would fall all the same.

I might as well say it now.

I lifted my head to look at Wei Liao and, under his strangely scorching gaze, said,

“Husband, I want to petition to be Cast Off.”

In an instant, silence fell all around us.

It was as if even the air had stopped moving.

Wei Liao’s breath caught, and a dangerous aura spread through his eyes.

The imposing presence of a man long accustomed to high office and bloody battle rose from him.

The wind was rising before the storm.

The words were in a frenzy:

[Time to feast!]

[The author’s serving the main course!]
