After returning home, I anonymously informed Tang Xue’s father that she had paid an exorbitant price for Pei Lang.

I did not want Tang Xue to become the person I had once been.

Sure enough, within two days, I heard that she had been confined to her room.

But the money was already spent. Her father could hardly send Pei Lang back to the black market, so he would certainly find ways to earn that money back from him.

The Tang household was another kind of hell.

Just then, a servant came rushing over. “Second Miss, something terrible has happened! Bai Chuan and Xiao Wei are fighting!”

Xiao Wei was Cheng Yang’s beastkin.

I shot to my feet and followed the servant to the garden outside the villa.

Not far away, Xiao Wei had Bai Chuan pinned beneath a crabapple tree. His fists, each the size of a sandbag, hammered down again and again.

“Second Miss, please save Bai Chuan! He’ll be beaten to death!” the servant urged anxiously.

I raised a hand for silence, my gaze fixed on Bai Chuan.

After several days of care, he had largely recovered.

If he had survived the beast-fighting arena in his previous life despite his frail body, how could Xiao Wei possibly hold him down and beat him now?

He was concealing his strength.

Because he did not trust me.

In that case, I had no reason to save him.

I did not need a beastkin who might stab me in the back.

If we were to take the first step toward trust, he had to be the one to cross the distance between us.

Bai Chuan still did not fight back. He shielded his head with both arms as the sickening crack of bone rang out.

He turned his head and spat out blood. At the same moment, he saw me.

Shock and pain filled his eyes. Silently, they demanded to know why I would not save him.

My hand clenched at my side, my lips pressed into a hard line.

Xiao Wei drove fist after fist into Bai Chuan’s soft abdomen. Curled around himself, Bai Chuan watched me through a gap in the foliage with those keen, indifferent eyes.

The sight of blood stirred Xiao Wei’s beastly instincts beyond control. Excitement blazed in his eyes.

Wolf ears sprang from his head. He was clearly on the verge of going berserk.

I held my breath. My body trembled faintly with tension as I gritted my teeth and stared at Bai Chuan.

Bai Chuan, take this one step toward me, and from this day on, I will protect you!

His ordinary pupils slowly narrowed into serpentine slits, cold enough to chill the blood.

When Xiao Wei bent to tear out his throat, Bai Chuan moved.

His legs melted into a snake’s tail and coiled around Xiao Wei’s body. At the same instant, fangs emerged from his mouth, and he sank them into Xiao Wei’s neck without hesitation.

Xiao Wei thrashed in pain, every muscle in his body bulging and trembling.

Bai Chuan’s tail tightened, crushing the life out of him.

I watched Xiao Wei’s face turn visibly purple and understood in an instant: Bai Chuan’s fangs were venomous.

So he was a poisonous snake.

Cheng Yang finally arrived. Realizing something was wrong, she shouted coldly, “Bai Chuan, I dare you to kill him!”

I immediately stepped into view, every inch of me commanding. “So what if he dies?”
