Chronicles of Heaven's Chosen - Chapter 64
Everyone present started and turned toward Cang Li and the disciples of the Severed Affections Sect.
Surprise flashed through Yuan Yao’s eyes. She clearly had not expected him to attack.
The Severed Affections Sect disciples were both shocked and furious.
“Cang Li, what do you think you’re doing?!”
Cang Li walked toward them.
Yuan Yao followed.
The Severed Affections Sect disciples drew their swords and watched Cang Li warily, ready to counterattack the moment he made another move.
Yet in the midst of that tense standoff, the youth scratched his head and grinned.
“Sorry. My hand slipped.”
The spectators waiting for a good show stared at him in bewilderment.
Cang Li walked up to the wounded man and wrapped a hand around his spear. Under the man’s terrified gaze, he yanked it out.
Blood sprayed.
“Aaaagh!”
“Cang Li, you’ve gone too far!” The young man at the head of the group raised his sword and charged.
Clang—
Sword and spear collided with an ear-piercing shriek of metal.
“I haven’t. Don’t make things up,” Cang Li denied.
The young man had disliked him for a long time. Seeing Cang Li behave so shamelessly sent rage blazing through him, and he swung his sword with all his strength.
Cang Li swiftly twisted aside.
The two fell into a fierce fight, drawing the attention of everyone in the courtyard.
The man in charge felt a headache coming on. He immediately tried to stop them.
“Enough! Stop fighting!”
Cang Li stepped back, then thrust his spear. It tore through the air and struck the young man’s blade head-on.
The impact sent painful numbness through the young man’s hand.
Cang Li sighed. “I, Cang Aotian, may be a picky eater, but I am not someone who picks fights!”
The crowd was speechless.
“Exactly!” Yuan Yao called loudly.
Heads turned toward the white-robed young woman standing nearby. Her hair was tied in a high ponytail, and the multicolored ribbon woven through it fluttered as lightly as a dancing butterfly. Her eyes were large and beautiful, her face small, and her skin cool and fair.
Who was she?
No one present had ever seen Yuan Yao before. They began whispering among themselves, asking whether anyone recognized her or knew her identity.
A female disciple of the Severed Affections Sect sneered. “Cang Li is obviously the one who started trouble! He was also the first to injure someone!”
“Then who was bad-mouthing us?” Yuan Yao shot back.
“Did we name either of you? You were the ones who decided our words were about you!” the woman mocked. “You people from the Xiaoyao Sect rely on Immortal Lord Qianshan’s support and think every other sect is beneath you!”
Her accusation immediately struck a chord with many in the courtyard.
What would the Xiaoyao Sect amount to without Immortal Lord Qianshan?
It was only because he belonged to the Xiaoyao Sect that others avoided conflict whenever they met its disciples.
Over the years, everyone had come to believe the Xiaoyao Sect considered itself superior.
“Huh?” Yuan Yao blinked and looked at Cang Li. “Is that true?”
“Don’t listen to her nonsense.” Cang Li swept out his spear, knocking the young man back several steps. He sighed with feeling. “We of the Xiaoyao Sect have never looked down on people from other sects. We only put people we dislike beneath the soles of our feet.”
Understanding dawned on Yuan Yao.
So this was how her senior brothers and sisters conducted themselves!
The crowd wore a variety of expressions.
“Cang Li! You’re twisting words!” the female disciple snapped.
“Stop fighting!” Seeing the situation teetering on the edge of complete chaos, the man in charge broke into a cold sweat and shouted desperately.
Yushan City could afford to offend neither the Severed Affections Sect nor the Xiaoyao Sect.
“All right.” Cang Li retreated several steps and put away his spear.
The young man, however, had been driven beyond reason by shame and fury. His face flushed crimson as he glared at Cang Li. Then he raised his sword and stabbed without hesitation.
At that critical instant, a figure flashed into place and blocked the strike with her sword.
Boom—
The young woman was forced back half a step.
Cang Li’s eyes darkened at once.
Just as he was about to move, the young woman with the high ponytail launched herself at the attacker.
Yuan Yao unleashed one sword move after another, catching the young man completely off guard.
“Sneak-attack me, will you? I’ll stab, stab, stab you to death!”
She swung her sword with vicious force.
“Second Form of Xiaoyao—”
“Flowers Whisper, Rain Shatters!”
Countless razor-sharp streaks of sword light erupted like a violent storm and engulfed the young man. Each moved with astonishing speed and power, striking his openings with flawless precision.
In moments, dense sword marks covered his body. Wounds of every size split his flesh, and blood poured down to stain his robes.
Everyone in the courtyard stared in shock.
None of them had imagined that such an adorable, delicate-looking young woman could possess this kind of strength. By all reason, someone in the mid Foundation Establishment Realm should have posed no threat to an opponent in the late Foundation Establishment Realm.
There could be only one explanation…
She was capable of fighting above her cultivation level.
“Her swordsmanship is exquisite.”
In one corner of the courtyard, a green-robed woman watched Yuan Yao without blinking, complicated emotions flickering in her eyes.
After a moment of silence, she murmured, “I can almost see a trace of Ying Wuji in her…”
The purple-robed man beside her frowned. “Ying Wuji? Feiyan, you think she has some connection to him?”
Nan Feiyan did not answer.
Just then, a faint sound arose.
Several figures slowly emerged from the inner hall. They wore long robes, and their strides were steady and powerful, each step falling with a rhythm of its own. Their faces were solemn, their gazes keen, and their auras formidable.
“Who is fighting here?!” A scrawny white-haired old man roared, making everyone’s scalp prickle.
The young man from the Severed Affections Sect immediately restrained his aggressive aura. He saluted the old man with deep respect.
“Please quell your anger, Elder Yan! Cang Li of the Xiaoyao Sect attacked first. This junior had no choice but to defend himself…”
Every powerful figure beside Elder Yan turned toward Cang Li.
“Is that truly what happened?” Displeasure showed on Elder Yan’s face.
Yuan Yao sensed the sudden change in the surrounding atmosphere and stepped forward.
“They mocked us first!”
The young man sneered. “You decided our words were aimed at you. Did we ever say your names?”
Yuan Yao choked.
He was right. They had never named either of them.
But they had plainly been mocking her and Third Senior Brother.
Elder Yan’s gaze turned cold. “Since you struck and injured someone first, you must be punished.”
Before Yuan Yao could speak, Cang Li reached out to stop her. Then he smiled at Elder Yan.
“What right does someone from the Sacred Order have to punish me? Besides, I’m not an idiot. How could I fail to hear that the Severed Affections Sect was mocking me… and my Little Junior Sister?”
“Elder Yan, if I stood here and mocked you without using your name, would you be able to endure it?”
“Cang Li!” Elder Yan rebuked him furiously. “Qian Jueshan has certainly raised an eloquent disciple—one with no respect for his elders!”
Yuan Yao poked her head out from behind Cang Li and snorted.
“If we weren’t eloquent, wouldn’t you people frame us to death?”
