Fear filled the skull’s eyes. It could clearly sense the intense threat radiating from the shadowy figure before it.

It wanted to flee!

Expressionless, Qian Jueshan raised the longsword in his hand and slashed.

The skull exploded!

At the same time, the Nightmare Beast’s true body, hidden elsewhere, let out a piercing scream. With a sharp crack, a fissure split its skull.

The Beast had been grievously wounded, and everyone immobilized by its mental power abruptly regained their freedom.

They knew nothing about the destruction of its clone, so the sudden release left them confused.

Their gazes turned toward the place where the Nightmare Beast had last disappeared—

The dozens of prison rooms stacked together.

A sound suddenly came from within.

Everyone tightened their grip on their weapons.

One prison room abruptly broke apart, revealing the people inside.

They initially assumed those captives had broken free on their own, but then a second prison room shattered!

Then—

A third!

A fourth!

…

Everyone stared in astonishment.

Only Zhai Qingye wore a different expression. Disbelief filled his eyes.

He knew who was breaking open the prison rooms!

It was her!

Powerful waves of mental force rippled outward.

More and more city residents and disciples were freed.

They were too weak to support themselves, however, and immediately began to fall.

“Catch them!” Zong Rao shouted.

Before she finished speaking, numerous figures had already shot forward. They caught those who were weak or unconscious and carried them safely to the ground.

As the prison rooms disappeared one by one, the crowd gradually saw the figure trapped at the very center.

A girl in white stood there, her clothes stained with blood and her face streaked with dried blood.

Her eyes were closed, her lips utterly colorless, as though she had fallen into a deep sleep.

Beneath her feet was an enormous, brilliantly multicolored sword.

Two unconscious people were with her: a young man and a little girl of six or seven.

“Yaoyao!” Xiao Lingwei’s heart clenched at the sight of Yuan Yao. She immediately started toward her.

Xue Jin caught her by the arm.

“Wait,” he said calmly.

He was not the only one who could tell. More than half the people present had already realized that Yaoyao was the one breaking apart the prisons of mental power.

Xiao Lingwei calmed herself slightly, though her gaze remained fixed with aching concern on Yuan Yao’s bloodstained face.

She could not imagine how much pain Yaoyao had endured.

Ying Wuji’s expression was calm, betraying no emotion.

Every disciple of the Xiaoyao Sect was worried about their Little Junior Sister.

Elder Yan narrowed his eyes and stared sharply at the little girl who had offended him before without knowing the height of heaven or the depth of earth.

He had certainly never expected her mental power to be so formidable!

His expression darkened, and he snorted inwardly. Since she had rescued so many people, he would magnanimously overlook her earlier offense.

When the final prison room broke apart, Cang Li emerged.

Unlike the others, he was not weak in the slightest. On the contrary, he was alive and hopping about.

The people imprisoned with him were also in surprisingly good condition.

The moment Cang Li appeared, he found everyone staring at him. He paused, then waved openly at them with a broad smile.

Everyone was speechless.

Cang Li suddenly seemed to realize something and turned around.

A sight that made his hair stand and his bones shiver met his eyes—a face almost entirely covered in blood had appeared right in front of him!

The eyes in that bloody face flew open as if to devour him. Cang Li jolted and let out an involuntary shriek.

“A ghost!”

Before he could recognize Yuan Yao, a hand seized his ear and twisted hard enough to make him grimace.

He turned his head and saw a face even more terrifying than a ghost.

“S-Second Senior Sister!”

Then a pair of cold, bloody hands wrapped around his neck.

Cang Li shuddered. He looked up and immediately recognized the face this time.

His Little Junior Sister was covered in blood, her features twisted into a ghostly snarl. She opened her bloody mouth wide, pretending she meant to devour him like a vengeful spirit.

Cang Li’s mouth twitched. “Yuan Yao, are you an idiot?”

Pain shot through both his ear and neck.

“Urgh… Stop choking me…” Cang Li’s face flushed bright red.

Yuan Yao withdrew her hands and gave a displeased snort.

“That’s what you get for calling me a ghost!”

Cang Li coughed as he replied, “You really do look like one right now!”

Xiao Lingwei smacked the back of his head. “Check Yaoyao’s injuries already!”

Cang Li looked reluctant, but his body told a more honest story. He pulled Yuan Yao’s wrist toward him and took her pulse.

His expression shifted repeatedly.

He stared at Yuan Yao in disbelief.

Meanwhile, Xiao Lingwei carefully wiped the blood from Yuan Yao’s face.

“You aren’t injured at all!” Cang Li said in bewilderment. “And why is your pulse getting stronger?”

Ying Wuji and Xue Jin arrived as well.

“Eldest Senior Brother is missing,” Ying Wuji said gravely, his words coming fast. He had thought their Eldest Senior Brother might still be trapped in one of the prison rooms, but every room had now been broken open and there was still no sign of him.

That left only two possibilities.

Either the Nightmare Beast had hidden him away, or it had already devoured him.

Yuan Yao immediately searched the surroundings. There was no trace of Eldest Senior Brother. Senior Sister Zong Yu’er and Senior Brother Ao Su were missing as well.

Her heart plummeted.

In addition, Senior Brother Cui, Senior Brother Meng, Senior Sister Wenren, Senior Sister Lan, and Instructor Luo from Heavenly Learning Peak were all gone.

Xiao Lingwei’s and Cang Li’s expressions instantly turned grave.

They exchanged a look and hurried back to the Xiaoyao Sect group to explain the situation to Zong Rao.

Zong Rao already knew they were missing.

Her face remained calm. “Only by finding the Nightmare Beast’s true body can we learn whether they are…alive or dead.”

Her voice grew strained and heavy on the final four words.

Among the missing were not only disciples of her Heavenly Learning Peak, but also her only daughter—

Zong Yu’er.

“How do we find the Nightmare Beast’s true body?” Cang Li stared out at the murky gray space, which seemed to stretch on forever.

Yuan Yao suddenly spoke.

“I know where it is.”

Everyone turned toward her.
