Chronicles of Heaven's Chosen - Chapter 89
Yuan Yao stared at the ghost-masked youth.
After a long while, he still had not disappeared.
At last, realization dawned on her. “…You’re real.”
The young man ignored her and headed directly northeast.
Yuan Yao looked around. When she confirmed there was no one else nearby, she decided to follow Xie Yan.
She kept three meters behind him. “Xie Yan, do you know where we are?”
He did not answer.
Impatience flashed across his features. In the Wuduan Secret Realm, he had already made a bet with her and ordered her to turn around and get lost whenever she saw him. Yet she clearly had not taken his words seriously.
Yuan Yao gave an inward snort at his silence, then continued walking while studying their surroundings.
She extended her mental power in search of the Nightmare Beast.
Xie Yan suddenly stopped.
Yuan Yao halted as well. The young man turned and stared at her coldly.
“Why do you cling to me like a dogskin plaster I can’t shake off?” he asked caustically. “Do you really think I wouldn’t dare kill you?”
Yuan Yao froze.
The next instant, Xie Yan swept out a hand. A tremendous force hurtled toward her.
Her expression changed, and she quickly gathered spiritual power to defend herself.
The impact drove her back several steps.
When she looked up, the young man had vanished.
“Dog Xie!” Yuan Yao cursed through gritted teeth.
She would never follow him again!
Fuming, Yuan Yao strode forward. After walking for some time, however, she realized the road ahead seemed endless and stopped.
She sat cross-legged, closed her eyes, and focused her will.
Separating her mental power into fine strands, she sent them toward the four sides and eight directions.
An hour later, she had not found the Nightmare Beast, but she had located Xie Yan.
Remembering how she had eaten defeat every time they met, Yuan Yao quietly gathered her mental power and attacked his head.
Xie Yan narrowed his eyes and turned.
Boom!
Their mental powers collided, and Yuan Yao instantly fell at a disadvantage.
Unwilling to concede, she attacked again.
Xie Yan sneered.
To his surprise, Yuan Yao’s mass of mental power suddenly closed around one strand of his own like a net cast by heaven and earth.
He frowned and was about to tear free when a faint pain stabbed through his sea of consciousness.
He realized…
The little trash’s mass of mental power was devouring his.
Xie Yan froze. He had never heard of anyone in the cultivation world being able to devour another person’s mental power.
He tried to withdraw the strand.
But Yuan Yao’s mass of mental power clung to it and began wolf-swallowing and tiger-gulping it down.
Xie Yan’s face turned cold.
He was about to release his full mass of mental power and erase hers—
When she fled!
He meant to give chase, but then seemed to sense something and looked toward a particular direction.
For the moment, he set Yuan Yao aside and sped toward it.
Yuan Yao’s mass of mental power had not truly left. It was quietly hiding around the corner of a wall.
She, too, sensed the Nightmare Beast’s aura. Her eyes flew open, and she put aside her grudge with Xie Yan. Rising at once, she hurried toward the source.
When she arrived, the ghost-masked youth was fighting a scarlet skull with his sword.
Yuan Yao recognized the skull as the Nightmare Beast, though its black-fog body was now gone.
At the same time, she caught the sharp scent of blood.
She looked to the side and saw an enormous hole in the ground. Her heart lurched.
She immediately rushed toward it.
The Nightmare Beast sensed her approach. The flaming skull turned, fixing its gaze on Yuan Yao.
It was astonished. This little human freak had broken through the second layer of Nightmare Space so quickly, passed through it, and reached the lair at the heart of its mental space.
Just before Yuan Yao reached the hole, a powerful, viscous mass of mental power slammed into her. Caught off guard, she was driven back eight or nine steps!
The ghost-masked youth also noticed her. His gaze shifted.
Yuan Yao materialized the Phantom Spirit Sword and advanced toward the vast cavern, her expression grave.
The Nightmare Beast tried to stop her.
Before it could act, the ghost-masked youth slashed with the force of thunder and sent its skull flying.
The corner of his mouth lifted. “Losing focus is never wise.”
He raised his sword. His voice was clear and cool, yet threaded with a dark malice.
“Hand over the Nine Heavens Soul Seal.”
The skull had barely steadied itself when it heard the demand. Red light flickered uncertainly within its empty sockets.
The Nightmare Beast sneered. “A mere Soul Transformation cultivator thinks he can steal my Nine Heavens Soul Seal? Dream on!”
While it was speaking, Yuan Yao leaped into the bottomless hole.
The Beast sensed her movement, and its gaze changed sharply.
Damn it!
“You seem more afraid of her,” Xie Yan observed, his tone obscure and chilling enough to make one’s scalp go numb.
The Nightmare Beast merely sneered.
It clearly did not consider Xie Yan a threat.
He let out an enigmatic chuckle. A beast actually thought him inferior to that little trash.
Good.
Very good.
Xie Yan flashed in front of the Nightmare Beast and swept out his sword!
The Beast disliked him just as much. It unleashed its terrifying mental pressure without restraint.
The young man’s body went rigid.
He seemed to have been bound by the pressure.
The Nightmare Beast could not resist mocking him. “With nothing but—”
Its words ended as a sword pierced straight through its skull!
“Aaaah!”
“Hm? What were you saying?” the ghost-masked youth asked with a quiet laugh. “Go on. Repeat it for me.”
His sword descended like a torrential rain, striking the skull again and again as he toyed with it!
The Nightmare Beast tried to fight back, only to discover that its mental pressure had no effect whatsoever on the ghost-masked youth.
Alarm filled it.
What had happened in the outside world during the thousand years it had been sealed?!
One human freak could devour its mental power.
The other was completely unaffected by its mental pressure!
While a hundred thoughts still yielded the Nightmare Beast no explanation, Xie Yan struck its skull horizontally, vertically, and diagonally, sending the entire head tumbling wildly.
Then—
Crack!
Agony tore through the Beast as Xie Yan split open the top of its skull. It tried to flee!
It darted forward, but he appeared in its path.
It fled left and saw Xie Yan again.
It fled right, only for him to chop down over its head and face.
Bang!
The skull crashed into the ground.
“Tell me,” Xie Yan said as he approached at an unhurried pace, danger threading through his clear, pleasant voice. “Which of us is stronger—her or me?”
