Chronicles of Heaven's Chosen - Chapter 90
“Y-You!” The Nightmare Beast stared at the human youth in terror.
Xie Yan seemed dissatisfied with its answer. He raised one foot, planted it on the skull, and ground down several times.
The skull tried to resist, only for his sword to stab into the earth beside it. Cold light gleamed along the blade, radiating crushing pressure.
“Hand over the Nine Heavens Soul Seal,” he said flatly.
The Nightmare Beast hastily agreed.
“I’ll give it to you!”
The Nine Heavens Soul Seal was of little use to it anyway. Once it recovered its peak strength, it had planned to destroy the seal that had imprisoned it for a thousand years…
The skull opened its mouth and released a cloud of smoke.
The smoke gradually gathered into the shape of a golden seal.
When Xie Yan saw the filth left by the Nightmare Beast around it, his foot pressed down harder.
Bang!
The skull was driven into the soil.
“Aah!” the Beast screamed.
Xie Yan frowned. Only after casting a Dust-Cleansing Spell on the Nine Heavens Soul Seal did he reluctantly put it away.
At the same time—
After leaping into the cavern, Yuan Yao discovered many people attached to a tentacle as thick as a towering tree.
Black fog covered their bodies, seemingly draining their soul power and blood.
More shocking still, some had already been sucked dry and reduced to skeletons.
Others had lost both eyes, while their arms and legs had been broken or twisted.
The sight shook Yuan Yao deeply.
She soon spotted Eldest Senior Brother, Senior Sister Zong, Senior Brother Ao, and the others.
They were in terrible condition. Their faces were not merely pale, but sallow, as though every trace of vitality had been drained away.
Without hesitation, Yuan Yao gripped the Phantom Spirit Sword and approached the enormous tentacle.
The black fog quickly noticed her movement and surged in her direction.
Yuan Yao met it with her sword and split it apart. But the instant it was severed, it gathered back together.
They began to fight.
Yuan Yao concentrated her mental power in an attempt to suppress the fog completely. While they struggled, however, she glimpsed Eldest Senior Brother and the others growing steadily paler!
Anxiety seized her.
She could not let the black fog delay her any longer. Otherwise, Eldest Senior Brother and the others would suffer irreversible damage to their foundations!
Then Yuan Yao remembered something, and her eyes brightened.
She summoned the golden egg.
“Quick, help me save them!”
The golden egg had been sleeping when Yuan Yao abruptly dragged it out of the spirit-pet space and ordered it to work. It was instantly annoyed.
It was about to lose its temper when Yuan Yao kicked it away, sending it hurtling toward Song Yan and the others.
The golden egg’s head rang from the impact. Once it steadied its round body, it shouted through gritted teeth, “Yuan. Yao!”
“I’m your master!” Yuan Yao shot back.
The black fog seemed to sense the golden egg’s presence and turned toward it.
Yuan Yao swiftly struck with her sword, blocking the fog while controlling her mass of mental power to devour its mental power!
“I won’t do it!” the golden egg snorted. It was no lowly minion. Why should it perform a minion’s work?
Yuan Yao sneered. “Refuse, and I’ll kill you!”
The golden egg hesitated.
It could sense her emotions.
She meant it.
Fuming, the golden egg rolled over to Song Yan and tried to knock him free with its shell.
After two collisions, it realized the tentacle had him firmly attached.
“I don’t have hands! What am I supposed to do?” the golden egg complained. It had not even hatched yet. Its entire body was round and smooth, without so much as a single edge.
“Think of something!” Yuan Yao shouted while fighting the black fog.
Then she added, “If you don’t have a hand, grow one!”
The golden egg fell silent.
“I’m an egg right now!”
Yuan Yao choked on her words. For a moment, she had forgotten that the golden egg was not Phantom Spirit and could not transform into whatever it pleased.
The Phantom Spirit Sword trembled faintly.
I’ll do it.
Yuan Yao immediately released the sword hilt and focused her will, summoning the golden egg back from the distance. Within a few breaths, it landed securely in her warm palm.
“Since I can’t help, you should send me back to the spirit-pet space—”
The golden egg’s voice cut off when it felt a powerful force hurling it forward.
“Aaaah!”
Yuan Yao threw it straight into the surging and billowing black fog.
Boom!
The golden egg smashed a huge hole through it.
Before the fog could recover, Yuan Yao formed a mental-power seal and attacked, drawing its attention.
At the same time, the Phantom Spirit Sword transformed into a gigantic hand. It grabbed Song Yan around the waist and tried to pull him free.
But the tentacle’s suction was too powerful.
If Phantom Spirit forced him loose, his bones would certainly break.
It immediately conveyed the situation to Yuan Yao.
Her expression turned grave.
She glanced upward. She did not know how long Xie Yan could keep the Nightmare Beast occupied.
If the Beast defeated him, it would return at once, and their situation would become even worse.
Yuan Yao looked at Eldest Senior Brother and the others and made her decision.
The fastest and most effective way to save everyone was—
“Phantom Spirit, stab me in the chest!” she ordered without changing expression.
Phantom Spirit froze.
Then it expressed a vehement refusal.
“Yuan Yao, are you insane?!” The golden egg was stunned. Who would order her own lifebound artifact to stab her?!
After launching another mental-power seal at the black fog, Yuan Yao rushed toward the tentacle.
“Hurry!”
Her tone allowed no one to put in a beak.
Only a mortal threat to her life could trigger one of Master’s life-saving talismans.
Phantom Spirit hesitated.
“Phantom Spirit!” Yuan Yao urged.
At her call, Phantom Spirit swiftly transformed into a longsword and stabbed toward her chest!
Yuan Yao clenched her teeth, her brows drawing tight.
She was a little afraid.
Afraid of the pain.
After all, who would enjoy agony that bored into the heart and pierced the bones?
But she did not regret her choice!
Just before the Phantom Spirit Sword entered her chest, its blade rang with a mournful cry. In the same instant, it transformed into a shield and did not strike her.
It could never bring itself to harm its master.
Sensing Phantom Spirit’s thoughts, Yuan Yao’s heart trembled.
She lowered her eyes to the brilliantly multicolored shield, unable to name what she felt. Then she reached out and patted it.
“Sword.”
Phantom Spirit did not respond.
Yuan Yao drew a deep breath and said helplessly, “Without a sword, how am I supposed to cut open the tentacle?”
